- Answer This lens is definatley good for sporting events, especially if your camera has a high number of mega pixels. That way, you can crop off your final images and still have clean & crisp results afterwords. I've taken hundreds of photos at White Sox games, and my results have been stunning. I even won an award for one of them!

- Answer I love the 55-300 and has mostly made my 55-200 obsolete. It's a little heavier but the zoom is really worth it.

QuestionBest Zoom lens to purchase?I am planning to purchase the Nikon D3100. I would also like to get a decent zoom lens for sports, scenery, wildlife (vacations). I have been looking at the AF-S DX VR 55-300 and the ED-IF AF-S VR 70-300. I am not sure which is the better lens and will meet be more of my needs. If I buy a package the price difference is around $150. I want to make sure I am making the best purchase and getting the most valure for my money. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I also notice that some lenses state VR II, is there a big difference between VR and VR II?

- Answer If you purchase the 55-300mm lens you will get more Wide-angle and zoom range than the 70-300mm lens. It's main difference was far it could shift the lens-shift element. VR I only provided three stops compensation and VR II provides Four.

- Answer That is the aperature range. The 4.5 aperature is the largest aperature at 55mm. The 5.6 aperature is the largest aperature at 300mm. The smaller the number the more light your lens will let in.

- Answer This lens has a 58mm filter thread; the best investment you can make to protect any lens is a UV filter (generally about $5). A UV filter will help cut haze on outdoor shots (nothing too dramatic) but other than that will have no affect on your photography-it's true benefit is in protection. In case the front of your lens bumps against something/falls face down/dirt gets kicked up it's much better to replace a cheap filter than an expensive lens! As far as additional filters, that all depends on the types of pictures you're taking and what sort of artistic vision you have for them. For example, I take a lot of shots with moving water so I use a neutral density filter to smooth out the water into a much more pleasing motion blur type movement.

- Answer They only post the warranty as 1 year because that's what you're guaranteed out of the box. However, in the box is an extended warranty card that you just fill in with your info and send it in with a copy of the receipt (you must do this within a certain period of time, I believe 2 weeks from purchase) and voila, instant extended warranty!
