Thunderbolt docks require AC power to supply the optimal amount of power to connected devices like external hard drives, monitors, etc, which requires a dedicated power source beyond what a standard USB connection can provide. Higher refresh rates may be achieved at lower resolutions (1440p or lower) however, this would greatly depend on the host computer if it can support it.
