Yes the sides come off because you can customize the color of the headset. Just make sure you line them back up perfectly. They can click back in without being perfectly straight and they will come back out easily. Once I lined mine back up they have not popped out since.

It is all about the comfort, fit, and positioning of the speaker position in relation to your personal ear/face shape. It is necessary to take the time to find the optimal settings for you, personally. I have had the same pieces that you mentioned come off, then click back on without any harm.
