QuestionIs this drive a single unit HD or is several HD units combined to make up the 14tb?
- Answer When I opened it up and looked inside, there is only one hard drive inside with 14tb.
QuestionIs this a 14 TB? The photos above show only 12.7 TB available !!
- Answer Operating systems usually report drive capacity in a scale based on powers of 1024. However, drives are usually advertised with the capacity quoted in a shorter scale based on powers of 1000, resulting in a larger number. This accounts for most of the difference.
Questionhow many videos can you store on this hard drive?
- Answer Depends on the size of your videos. This is like asking how much money can you fit in a suitcase?
QuestionHas anyone shucked this 14tb hard drive from its housing and used it in a NAS? Curious to know how well these drives hold up, compared to the WD Red drives.
- Answer Yes they work, currently have 2 in my Synology DS1817+. Drives inside are WD140EDFZ-11A0VA0.
QuestionIs this compatible with iMac?
- Answer Yes, I bought mine to use as a Time Machine backup for my iMac. As with most external drives you might buy, however, it comes formatted for use on a PC. It does include backup software that can be installed on a Mac, but I would recommend against that unless you aren't interested in using the iMac's built-in backup software. If you intend to use this as a Time Machine backup, it should be reformatted using Apple's Disk Utility, which can be found in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder, or simply click on the Spotlight eyeglass on the right side of the menu bar and type Disk Utility. After plugging the drive into your iMac, it should appear in the list of disks on the left side of the Disk Utility window. Click on the drive and then click on the "Erase" tab, select the format you wish to use and type in the name you wish to give your new disk drive, then click on the Erase button. Time Machine backups need to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and if you wish, Encrypted. Encryption provides another layer of security if there's a chance someone might break in and steal your Mac - otherwise it's not necessary. Once it's reformatted, your iMac will probably ask you if you wish to use the disk with Time Machine, so just click Yes. If you plan to use this for mass storage for something like storing your photos or other media, you can use Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or you might want to use Apple's newer APFS format, which provides better file management and faster searching, but it's only compatible with newer iMacs running Mojave or Catalina.
QuestionCould I connect this drive to the usb port on my router and backup over the network?
- Answer Yes you can.
Questiondoes this work with apple computers?
- Answer Yes, but it has to be reformatted. Connect one of these drives to a Mac, being sure that nothing else is heavily using the CPU, and it should register an error message with a prompt to format. If this doesn't happen within a minute, open Finder and look for the drive.

QuestionCan this be used as an external hard drive? What is the access time to files stored on it?
- Answer Yes. It is designed to be used as an external hard drive.
QuestionHi, I understand that the drives in the more expensive, my books, are better quality along with encryption. Is this true. Thanks, William
- Answer From my research, the hardware encryption seems to be the main difference, I don't think they are a much better quality overall. The Easystore has either Red or White drive, which are both designed for NAS or cloud storage, and to me that should mean durability. You can end up with either one, but from what I hear the White ones are just harder for people to shuck, they have an updated sata interface/driver that doesn't always work outside of the enclosure, so if you have no plans on doing that, there should be no difference in performance.
QuestionIt says desktop backup. Can it be used on a laptop notebook?
- Answer Yes this can be used with anything that has USB.
QuestionWhat is the connector on the front used for? The previous version only had one data connector which was on the back.
- Answer What connector on the front? I only see an activity light.
Questiondo you have any "external drives" that work with Windows 7?
- Answer They ALL work just fine in Win7.
QuestionCan I use put my music on the drive and then play it in my car from home off my phone in the car?
- Answer You don't want this box for that use. Wester Digital also makes a My Cloud model. You connect it to ethernet and it acts as a personal server. But I also don't recommend this. You'll need to open your network, then need solid connections at both ends while driving. Many variables that can fail during use. A much better option is a Passport Wireless. Its a drive with its own battery and wifi. You bring it with you and connect to it directly from any phone or tablet. Once the connection is set up, you can load music onto it and connect with a suitable app. nPlayer connects to such drives and plays music and video files directly.
QuestionCan it be used with a laptop?
- Answer Yes, as long as you have a USB port. It will be faster with a USB-3 connection (many of the laptops are USB-2).
