    Synopsis

    Reign of Fire
Medieval fantasy meets futuristic science fiction in this effects-heavy action epic from former X-Files director Rob Bowman. In present-day London, 12-year-old Quinn Abercromby witnesses the awakening of a hibernating dragon from a centuries-long slumber, the result of a construction dig supervised by his mother and an incident for which Quinn feels partially responsible. Twenty years later, the adult Quinn (Christian Bale) is the fire chief of a refortified castle community, responsible for dousing the blazes lit by the dragon's prodigious number of flame-spewing offspring, airborne juggernauts that have wreaked havoc across the globe, torching civilization and turning humans into an endangered species. Hope arrives in the form of Denton "Dragon Slayer" Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey), an American known to be the only man to ever kill one of the dragons, and Alex (Izabella Scorupco), a scientist/pilot who's a member of Van Zan's army, a zealous fighting force that includes a secret weapon: the Archangels, paratroopers using themselves as bait to attract and then dispatch the deadly beasts. Reign of Fire (2002) co-stars Gerard Butler, Alice Krige, and Alexander Siddig. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

I missed this at the theaters; but, found this in the bargain bin at Best Buy. While it is not a "great" film; it is a good one. It does have some problems(the dragons eating the ash as food; I do have a background in biology, and I can't see how they can get much nutrition from ash); but, tries to get around that by just sort of mentioning it in passing. The explanation for the fire breathing is more believable(two glands in the mouth). The movie is somewhat slow until the appearance of the American militia group; then the pace picks up. The actors(Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey) do a good job of bringing their characters to life; and, showing the differences between them. Rob Bowman(of X-Files fame) does a good job of directing. The direction that the movie goes is not easily predicted; and a fair amount of suspence does occur. I can recommend this film; but, it could have been a bit better.

Reign of Fire Still Holds Up

Reign of Fire seems to have been quickly forgotten by the general public, maybe due to its unique nature. It is a modern action movie featuring dragons, after all. Picked up the Blu ray on sale and was surprised by how well this film still holds up. The action and special effects are spectacular. Bale and McConaughey turn in gritty performances along with then-newcomer Gerard Butler. McConaughey is almost unrecognizable as a bald-headed, cigar-chomping soldier. Maybe the pacing of the film is off here and there, maybe there isn't quite enough action as would be expected, but Reign of Fire is very entertaining. It's an older Blu ray release, but still offers enough to dazzle on any high-def system. Recommended!

Over a decade before they squared off for the Best actor Oscar, Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey duked it out in a post apocalyptic world destroyed by Dragons. This film was pretty enjoyable and it had some interesting, original ideas. There were several droughts throughout where not much happened and the film became a bit dull. But once the action kicks in, things got interesting. The highest praise I can give this is to point out how well the special effects hold up after 12 years. The Dragons look fantastic and their designs are very well done too. Don't expect many layers going into this. It's a bare bones actioner with a couple great actors who had yet to reach greatness at this point.

      Dragons live

The story is that while mineing in England miners find a dragon's nest and the eggs and "dragon father" wake and start killing and driveing the humans underground. This is were we start as a group of people try to live and not be killed. This comes to an end when a small army of Americans come and start killing the dragons arund them. This makes the dragons mad and this makes them roast the humans home. Who is left after decides to kill the dragon father (only one male and tons of females, kill the male kill all) and take back the world. Its a good mive that would make some dragon lovers mad but it is a good movie for many.

This is a fantastic film, my wife and I love it! Christian Bale was great, as usual, and Matthew McConaughey, playing a role like you've never seen. This is like a real life fantasy come true. Great plot and great special effects, all around exciting and fun to watch. Buy it! You'll want to watch it more than once. I highly recommend it! Also, if you like this you may want to check out Beowolf, Godzilla (1998), and Cloverfield. (I assume everyone at this point has seen Dragonheart, and Dungeons and Dragons was a let down, unless you're 12 yrs. old.)

      Solid, if slightly underwhelming, B-movie

Reign of Fire is a solid B-movie - anyone expecting a full-on "dragon vs. humans" story will be sorely disappointed, but as a dystopian fantasy, the film is much more successful. Director Rob Bowman gets a lot of mileage from a tiny budget, though his best assets are a fully committed dramatic performance from Christian Bale and an unhinged, scenery-devouring one from the great Matthew McConaughey.

This is one of those films where everything should've worked. You had a great premise, an outstanding cast and an "I've gotta see that!" trailer. Unfortunately it all came together as a mediocre movie with a "meh" story that was only partially saved by its amazing special effects.

I thought the movie had a refreshing take of mixing the old dragon myth with a modern day loure. I enjoyed the movie and felt that it was a pleasure to watch instead of some of the cheezy low budget movies that you see go direct to video. If your into dragon movies I give it a Recommendation.
