It is a decent computer for average use

I'm not an average user. I'm a software developer but I do not code at home. I'm just using the computer for entertainment (watching/streaming videos, browsing). I was hesitant at first to go with Dell since I was an HP user for more than 5 years even though we use Dell at work. Anyway, I was not ready to buy an expensive one yet after getting frustrated with a premium HP Envy last November 2015 from HP (returned due to IPS backlight bleeding on 2 units and very heavy 17.3 inch). I was planning to buy in June. Unfortunately, my HP Pavilion decided not to start anymore. I think my HDD got busted and it wouldn't boot. So, given the circumstance, I had no choice but to pick a good one that is not expensive. The nearest tech store is BestBuy. After sorting by price on my mobile phone, I landed on this Dell. It's not even on sale at 499.99. Build Anyway, it's not that heavy due to it's plastic inner build. The outside still resembles a bit premium. The entire bottom is black plastic. The top is made of aluminum that is not shiny that helps on your grip. It's not a fancy-looking machine but it does the job. What I like is the ability to replace the battery. And I believe it is easy to add more memory into it, just remove the bottom cover and that's it. In some computers, you need to remove a lot of things to reach the memory slot. That might even void the warranty. This comes with 1 year warranty. Keyboard It's usable, typical of a Dell keyboard layout. It has a full number keys. It has backlight as well using F10. There are 3 settings, on, a little bit brighter, off. It's fine. I'm using an external wireless keyboard. RAM/Processor I think 6GB RAM for this i5 seems adequate enough for an average user. However, I'm not your average user. I have 3 different browsers opened (Chrome, Opera, Firefox) with at least 2 tabs. And I have another Chrome window with at least 5 tabs. I'm also watching a movie. Avast is running in the background. And my windows explorer is opened. I have roughly 63% CPU usage, 71% Memory usage, 7% Disk usage and about 1% network usage. I'm a bit impressed. Now, I sometimes run CCleaner and MalwareBytes (very I/O intensive use) and that normally hits 100% CPU. In the future, I might add more memory into this machine. Screen I seldom use the touchscreen but that's nice to have. The screen may not be as crisp as the IPS screens, but you cannot complain at this price point. It's just an able screen. The texts are still readable at the highest recommended resolution. It's a glossy screen so expect reflection and fingerprints. That's why I don't use the touchscreen. I'm faster when typing with both hands and with the use of a mouse. If I need to use touch, that only means I'm outside and I won't be using this computer for that. It doesn't look cheap either. Although the resolution of this computer is not full HD, it's still fine. You won't worry about backlight bleeding since it'ns not an IPS screen. It's still a good screen that does it job. I'm also not using that screen since I'm using a 29-inch LG (full HD widescreen format) via HDMI. So, HDMI is working. Wifi/Ports I have tested all ports and they're working. I'm not sure which one is the USB 3 port. I really hope there are more USB ports. I need at least 4. It does not have the USB-C yet. Sound Sound is audible and loud enough. I don't expect it to fill a concert hall. It's enough for watching movies/listening to music upclose. Webcam I haven't really used the webcam yet. The only time I used it was when during registration when you can substitiute your face for logging in. It's working so far. I don't need to type the password anymore. I wished there's a fingerprint scanner like in HP where you can use that to log into other sites. Battery I haven't drained it yet. It came with charge. I won't be able to know how long it will last since I'm always plugged in. Anyway, it's easy to replace the battery. I'm glad the power adapter is not those huge bricks. It's small with a green LED light on it. Touchpad I'm not a touchpad person so I really can't comment much besides saying it worked when I used it. It's also a bit wider. Quite? It's just my first day using this and I'm already hammering it. It's not 100% quiet. You hear something if you listen to it carefully. I think that's the HDD. It's not SSD so booting is not fast. I'd say more than 30 seconds to boot up. Shutting down seems to take some time as well. From time to time, I hear the fan for a few seconds. It's not as annoying as my previous HP laptop where the fan is at 100% all the time. Heat I've been running for several hours now and I notice the heat is only on the QWERTY side of the keyboard. It's not too hot. I think you can survive putting this computer on your lap. Conclusion For the price, I'd say this is a good budget computer. It's a capable machine if you cannot afford those premiums ones.

    Bang for your buck...

The laptop is fast and has all the "bells and whistles" that other more expensive laptops have such as Keyboard Backlit (I really wanted that in my new computer), Intel Realsense 3D camera, very sleek design (in my opinion this is actually a beautiful and well built laptop), free webroot internet security (not that I'm fond of webroot) but it was included free, and not to forget Touchscreen technoloy. It also has up 7 hours battery life but I have not tested it yet. The screen brightness is not as bright as my previous laptop and there are other laptop computers with much brighter screens. I feel it can be at least 10% to 20% brighter, but I won't knock the computer for it because the price is $599 and it is still well worth it. I was at Bestbuy for over an hour looking for the best deal without exceeding $1000 budget. I am happy and I believe you will be too. I got the 2 year extended warranty just to be safe as I almost always do for electronics.

    my first laptop

This is my first laptop I purchased. It was an open box purchase. I wanted touchscreen and the biggest one I could get for my budget. I like the specifications i5 6200u, 6 GB Ram, and Large hard drive. At first, I thought that all i5 were quad core until I did more research. I discovered the mobile i5 6200u is a dual core simulating a quad core. Also discovered the i7 6500u is a dual core simulating a quad core found in laptops more expensive than this one. The computer seems to operate fine. The memory is expandable to 16GB, I think the hard drive can be upgradable to a solid state drive (SSD). I like the following/features: 1) HDMI--able to watch on big TV or use two monitors 2) USB 2.0-- wireless mouse, Hauppauge tuner, printer, 3) USB 3.0-- My experience only: it transfers 4-6 GB videos to USB 3.0 flash drive 4 times faster than USB 2.0 4) Ethernet-- I use this about 90% of the time 5) Bluetooth--connect to blue tooth speakers, headphones, keyboard 6) Touch pad--works smoothly 7) Backlit keyboard-- very nice in dark situations--Fn+F10 to turn off and on 8) card reader-- camera to pc 9) sound is good enough or better then usual 10) I like the ability to rotate screen with keyboard Ctrl + Alt+ up/down/left/righ arrow keys Touch screen-- is fairly responsive with certain stylus. I seem to have great success with Targus Stylus. Overall, I like the product very much. It works good with Microsoft products and services. Works well with programs I acquired.

I love how it has light up keys and that it is a touch screen. I'm not a big fan of Windows 10 so that is all that I have against this laptop. Other than that I love using Dell PC...been a user for 11 yrs.

    Maybe it's just defective?

I've had this laptop for approximately 6 days and I'm sad to say I'll be returning it. I wanted to love it. It's sleek and has all the features I was looking for and the price was great. I was confident in Dell because I currently have a 5 year old laptop that has been wonderful and still works pretty good although it's running slower from all I've put on it. Since I could find no reviews online for this exact model, I instead researched all of the features this one had and decided to give it a try. Upon start up, it ran extremely slow (but hey, it's waking up, right?) and suddenly turned to a blank white screen. I waited about 10 minutes to see if it'd pass but nothing. I had to power it down and start over. It then took two more attempts to just get through the start up because it froze and erased everything I had previously entered. Once I finally got in, it ran much slower than anticipated, even slower than my current Dell that is dragging because it has 5 years worth of stuff on it. Day 2, I was browsing online and my screen froze. A notification popped saying that the "driver display stopped responding and has recovered" Shortly after, I was prompted to install a Dell update, which I did, and restarted. After this it seemed to work fine and was fast. On Day 4 the touchscreen stopped working and nothing seems to fix it. My experience with the other features below: Touchpad - It's very sensitive. You have to scroll with 2 fingers (I prefer using one) but when doing so it thinks you're using the zoom feature and it's constantly zooming or shrinking the page I'm on or it ends up highlighting things. Also, because it's pretty large your hands will inevitably rest on it occasionally and your cursor will bounce all over the page. Keyboard - I'm a girl with pretty small hands and the keys are smaller than I'm used to. I will caution a man with larger fingers/hands that you may have issues between the smaller keys and larger touchpad. Check it out in the store if you're unsure. Display - Looks pretty good although picture is not as clear and crisp as I would like. However, for the sleekness and price I'm okay with it. Headphones - work fine, sounds pretty good Audio - sounds pretty good DVD+/-RW Drive - I could get nothing to work on it. (Tried an audio CD and DVD) Didn't automatically start playing either. Tried manual play but to no avail. Could hear and feel it reading but got nothing. I could be ignorant in this area but I've never before had an issue using this before. Webcam/Camera - Slightly grainy but doesn't have a drag so it's a trade off Touchscreen - worked nicely at first but can't get it to work since Day 4. No changes in settings, restarts, etc. have made a difference. HDMI - Hooked up and played to my tv fine. Looked good, no issues Wireless and Bluetooth - detected smart phone and printer, connected with no issues It's a beautiful and sleek laptop but there are too many issues within the first week to justify keeping it. I hate to say it but this will be going back to Best Buy. Perhaps this particular one is just defective. I will consider exchanging it and update if I do. I am curious to hear other reviews to see if mine was just a dud straight out of the factory. I've attached a picture of the specifications listed on the box it comes in since there seems to be some confusion.

    For the Money...

For the Money, this laptop is acceptable especially with a touch screen. The biggest issue with the laptop is Windows 10. Even upgrading the ram to 16GB won't overcome Microsoft. I have read the tips online and turned off many of the features trying to get better performance. The laptop will randomly freeze for several seconds at a time. I have not figured out how to keep the led light in the front to stay set to a hard drive activity light. I have to hit fn + h everytime I start the laptop to get a visual drive activity light. It has also rebooted a few times on its own. I guess it gets bored. It has remembered and saved anything I had open when it reboots. It's kind of like sharing the laptop with a paranormal entity. I didn't really set my hopes too high but wished it was a bit better quality since it has Dell's name and logo on it. The keyboard is very flimsy and I hope it lasts.

I bought this to replace my old desktop, it had the features I wanted at the price I was willing to pay, I'm just using this for basic computing, so it's working just fine. Getting used to Windows 10 is kinda a pain but learning as I go. Went ahead and upgraded the memory to 16 gig for 60 bucks, well worth the cost

I really needed a new computer quickly. I checked out the reviews and decided that this would work. Overall it's a good computer. I'm not used to using a touchscreen on a laptop, but that's a nice feature. It is taking a bit to get used to not having definite right and left mouse buttons, but that's just not a big deal. I'd recommend this to someone for the price.

Nice laptop to have at this price. Had some issues when connecting to Internet through ether net cable as it was showing that some drivers were missing. Furthered to see that as it is a new laptop with new windows 10 set up just before that. Got to troubleshoot and have it upgrade couplease of times to make it to work. Other than this haven't had any issues.

I used a computer every day for about 16 - 18 hours a day. To say I give them a workout is an understatement. I need something with lots of RAM and hard drive storage. This computer has not disappointed me yet. It is pretty fast and has lot so storage. Runs well and I do really love the backlit keyboard for late night work. I don't really use he touch screen so can't comment on that. All in all it is a nice computer that doesn't run hot.

My only complaint would be that the power button is oddly unresponsive, at times I may need to hit it a few times or hold it for the comp to actually turn on. It loads relatively slow to get to the main screen, but when it starts up I have no problems. I only use for microsoft, email, Facebook, music, I really like the backlit keyboard, number keypad and touch screen. Overall I'm please, but if I had an extra 1K I'd be much happier with the new Dells. You get what you pay for, great purchase in this price range.
