Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the EcoTank ET-4850's print quality, ease of use, and straightforward setup. Many appreciate its compact size. While some users find the noise level a bit high and have experienced challenges with the document feeder and scanning functions, the positive feedback on printing and ease of use outweighs these concerns for most. A few customers also mentioned the printer's price point as a potential drawback.

    Great when it works, but...

Beware if you print infrequently like I do. My first print (per the print head check sheet) was 5/2023, so the printer is about 18mo old. I have printed a total of 958 pages in that 18mo period. I print about once every 2 weeks, and EVERY TIME I go to print there are gaps in the printing. I need to run the Print Head Maintenance multiple times (like 4-5 times every time I want to print) and even then I sometimes need to do a power clean before it will print. When it works, it works well, but to print a single page document and have it come out nice, it might take 20min of running the print head maintenance and take 7 sheets of paper (first sheet to see the document printed incorrectly, then 5 more sheets for print head maintenance, then finally the sheet with what you want in the first place). If it doesn't clean on the regular print head maintenance, the recommendation is to "wait 12 hours then run a Power Cleaning". Who the heck has time to wait 12 hours to print something??? I figure of the 959 sheets I've printed, the breakdown is something like this: 200 sheets are garbage - they were the sheets I wanted to print but came out bad so I needed to do cleaning. 600 sheets are print head maintenance. 9 are power cleaning sheets. 150 are the good documents I wanted. The bottom line is that this eco tank actually costs significantly more to operate than a traditional cartridge printer when you consider the WASTE of INK, PAPER and TIME having to clean the print heads before being able to get a decent print. Why 150 when I attempted 200? Because I gave up and used a different printer because I didn't have 12 hours to wait to run a power cleaning. For this review I just ran Print head maintenance #5 for today (bringing my total print count to 959). As you can see in the images, my ink levels are good but even after 5 cycles there are still problems with the black and cyan print heads. I could probably clear them by running Maintenace another 2 or 3 times, and maybe a power cleaning. Again, if I used the printer every day it probably would work much better, but I don't. I would not recommend to infrequent printers. For the record, this is my first Epson printer in decades; I had been a very long time HP user but abandoned them over their subscription only ink cartridges. HP might have had issues with their way they bring ink to market, but at least I could get a decent print on the first pass without wasting time, ink and paper.

We've had this printer for about 3 months. Many kinks and the printing quality is subpar. Especially for the price tag! When you scan multiple items together it goes crooked and jams every time. When you do front and back prints it jams. We are very unhappy with this printer.

Well after less than 3 years the Epson ET 4850 keeps on disconnecting of the WIFI network. This place the 3850 which had issues after 2 years. Called Epson they gave me some things to try. They know about this issue from the past and they never fix it. But to no avail they could not help. Connects then drops out. I have red to many user complaints about the WIFI connection with older and the new ET 4950. DO NOT BUY AND EEPSON PRINTER if you plan to use WIFI. It will die in time. Nothing has changed it my Modem and router. Singal excellent according to the printer. Piece of junk. Going back to HP. Epson is not reliable.

The Epson ET-4850 has been problematic. I've received my fifth replacement, but the same WiFi error keeps occurring. Contact Epson Support at 202620, and they’ll replace your printer with a refurbished model. It's a hardware issue, not related to the router or computer. None of the five printers reached even 90% of their usage capacity.

I returned this and exchanged it for an HP Laser Printer. As a small business operator, I needed a reliable copier. Several sales force swayed me to buy this. However, it was noisy and the paper jammed more than I could deal with. Tech person came out and couldn't figure out the jam. The ink may last a long time, but my patience didn't.

Terrible for document fed scanning ok for printing

So I go in to Best Buy to buy a combination scanner & color laser jet printer. They have none so I am forced to buy this model. Within 20-25 pages of scanning the document feeder fails. It only pulls the document about halfway through before getting jammed. I search online and can find no solutions. The online guide for the model offers no additional help. I reach out to Epson customer support with the problem. They provide boilerplate type solutions - none of which work. I uninstall the drivers and reinstall. No help. I had a replacement warranty plan so I returned the printer/scanner. The new one makes it about 10-12 pages before it begins doing the same thing. If you need a scanner/printer combination and want the document feeder scanner to work, do not buy this unit. I should have just gone on eBay and bought a used color printer scanner combination from HP, Canon, or Lexmark. Horrible.

Purchased 09/2023. Had to replace under MF warranty the first year. Epson replaced it with a recondition one under warranty. This printer is not dependable. Keeps dropping off the network and the router is the same room. Prints slow, really slow, many other complications with printing. Scanning to computer works sometimes. Epson took a step backwards with this one. We had a Epson All in one for almost five years until it was accidently broken. I think Epson business model for this printer was Planned Obsolescence.

Installed printer 1/1/2024, & have had nothing but trouble since. i have printed a total of 3415 pages as of 1/31/2024 & approx 75 pages accounts for paper waste (pages unreadable & nozzle checks). I have already had to replace the maintenance box. I had a Epson ET-3710 that I installed on 5/28/2021. I printed 13,218 pages before I had to replace the maintenance box, (replaced with this printer). I got 82,345 pages before it gave out, almost 3 years. Needless to say, I will be returning this ET-4850, next week!

Prints Clear and Great... When Software Allows It.

The printer works great. It's easy to set up, but software and connectivity are GARBAGE. The main app it asks you to use is Epson Smart Panel, which isn't very smart. Trying to use it forces all my prints to be smaller than I need them to be, and theres no way to change the borders on paper to prevent this resizing, so I'm forced to use another app. Every other app I use to connect to the printer only works if I disable the printer from my phones settings, then add it back EVERY TIME I PRINT. And even then, it only occasionally actually connects, so I'm stuck here disabling, adding new printer, does it work? No? Okay, close app, disable, add new. Does it work? Yes, but every so often itll just cancel on its own and waste even more paper. Totally unacceptable at this price range. All in all, it's the perfect printer if you're fine with wasting 1/4 of the ink and about $40 worth of paper just to figure out how to get it to do what it's made to do.

ADF Won't Work with 20 lb paper.

I bought an ET-4850 in July. True to the low reviews, the ADF jammed 99% of the time. I just received a replacement yesterday under warranty and it does the same thing. OBTW, customer service was a bear to navigate. First tier help is useless; put on hold after every question to "ask a supervisor." After some analysis, observation and trial & error, I concluded the ADF works fine with thick, rigid (24 lb or greater) paper, but not the most common 20 lb OR LESS like many companies are now using in their mailings. I looked at the design and attribute it to two problems: (1) the precise width of the black paper chute at the top of the ADF is exactly 8-9/16" wide...the same ACTUAL size of "8-1/2 inch" paper. So when the ADF tries to drag it through this gauntlet, 20 lb paper buckles, twists and ultimately jams. (2) Contributing to allowing the twisting is that where the feeder starts to curl the page around 180 degrees, there are only two guide stays on the outer edges and NONE IN THE MIDDLE. It is this initial buckling of the thin paper in the middle that starts the twisting and jamming. So I paid for a MFP with an ADF and don't have one usable with most paper. Additionally, the scan software does not do automatic front/back resequencing after a manual flip like the HP scan software does. And OBTW, the red also does print very dull/washed-out as stated in many reviews; can't tell you why.

    Disappointment

I recently purchased the ET-4850, and I must admit I had high hopes for it, given its price tag. However, my experience with this printer has left me quite dissatisfied. One of the primary issues I encountered was the connectivity problem. Whether attempting to connect via Wi-Fi or through a direct connection, setting up this printer was a frustrating experience. It frequently lost its connection, leading to print jobs getting interrupted, and I had to repeatedly reset the network settings. This made the overall user experience far from smooth and efficient. Another major disappointment with the printer was its color quality. I expected vibrant and true-to-life colors, but what I got were rather dull and lackluster prints. Even after adjusting the settings and using high-quality paper, the output still failed to meet my expectations. The colors lacked the depth and richness I was hoping for, especially considering the premium price point of this printer. Considering the connectivity issues and the subpar color quality, I can't help but feel that I didn't get the value I was expecting for the price I paid. I had hoped that a printer in this price range would deliver exceptional performance, but it fell short of my expectations in multiple ways.

Fairly quiet and it does have Epson quality. The main feature is the tank design, I have had the product over a year and have never had to replace toner tank yet, although the black soon, So this does save hassle factor and money for toner. HOWEVER, big drawback. The small screen is SO small you need a magnifying glass to read it. Terrible. Also, when you turn the machine on, it will auto turn off after about 5 hours of non use, and there is no way to turn it on remotely, a big drawback when I want to print from outside the home. Also, to touch the buttons on the tiny tiny screen, you almost need a stylus, even an average size finger will not work. Terrible design, not what I expected from Epson.

I had an old Epson Artisan printer for many years and was content. I wanted something to print better quality photos so recently purchased the 4850 Eco tank. The quality of print is poor and I am surprised to see this in an expensive machine. Blacks come out as gray making the print light and difficult to read, and the colors are very diluted. For example, a royal blue will print as a pastel powder blue, a bright orange as almost a yellow. The print is also a little grainy or fuzzy, instead of strong and clear. The pages come out faster, which is nice, but what good is that if it prints poorly. The screen is very small and there is a need to look at it really close to make selections and to turn off. Even though I was careful and followed the set up instructions well, I will be calling Epson to see if perhaps there is something that can be changed in the setup. If not, I will be returning the printer and will stay away from Epson in my next purchase.

Returning this printer. Print quality is good although the printer sounds ancient. The big problem is that the feeder doesn't work. It keeps saying that there is a paper jam but there isn't. And the documents in the feeder have not moved so there couldn't be a paper jam!

Love the Ink System, but the Printer Still Sucks

Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed.

This printer's greatest strength is the liquid ink. Easy to fill with absolutely no mess at all and the cost is sooooooo much lower than HP Inkjet ink. We also like its small footprint. But otherwise, it's been nothing but problems for us. The clarity of the copy just sucks -- even after repeated attempts to align the print heads. Fuzzy, jags in lines, etc. Makes it VERY difficult to see small fonts. The USB port is buried inside the back of the machine, making it impossible to use some connectors due to the recessed port and the bulky housing around it. And even after purchase of a connector that physically works, I can't get the printer to send a PDF file through the connector after scanning. It runs through it's routine, but doesn't send the scanned file through the connector. No error message either. The printer constantly indicates "the wrong sized paper has been inserted" when it's Office Depot's standard thickness 8.5 x 11 inch paper! This happens about 20% of the time. And perhaps the most frustrating problem with the printer is it's constant error message that it is 'Out of Paper', even though there are 100+ sheets in the carrier, pushed up nicely against the back stop. Another problem is the exit tray. It's very flimsy and eventually starts dumping pages on the floor. Overall, if I could give the printer a "0" I would. Confined to a wheelchair, I really have tried to find a way to accept its other problems. But after five months, we've finally had enough and are going to return it. Still not sure whether a different Epson model might work. I love the ink system, but the rest of the printer's problems are just too great.
