This drive fell 2 feet and was broken instantly!

I was super excited to use this hard drive as a wedding photographer because I know SO many who use it and love it. I honestly have not been impressed. It was great for the first 4-5 months. It was portable, quick to edit off of and easy to use. However, I was on a road trip and using it in the car. It slipped off of my seat and fell literally 2 feet into the side of the door. After that, it started blinking red at me and wouldn't plugin or read on my laptop. It was done. I had to send it into data recovery to get my data off of it WHICH COST A FORTUNE. Fortunately, LaCie has good support and warranty so it replaced my broken drive but it was a headache to fix with so much extra stress, money and time. They talk about these being shock absorbant and obviously since it is not an SSD the moving parts were not protected enough because falling 2 feet ended up being a level three data recovery process. Definitely sticking to SSD drives to work off of from now on out and I would not recommend this to anyone who travels, works in coffee shops or moves around at all because accidents happen.

The Lacie portable drives are fantastic, durable and fast. And I love the cable storage feature in the rubber case. Very cool product!

Good drive to transition between Macs

Bought it as I needed to transition data from a 2013 Mac Pro with thunderbolt 2 ports and it comes with a built in thunderbolt 2 cable, USB-C to USB-C cable, and USB-C to USB-A cable. Very good performance, works really well over thunderbolt 2 and USB-C. You can get cheaper drives for just USB-C and then use the USB-C to USB-A cable, but this way I get maximum speed from the older generation of Macs (non USB-C) and can continue to use this for the newer generation.

I really like these hard drives, they are super easy to use, everytime I get a new client that wants a lot of filming I always end up buying them their own Lacie hard drive to store all their footage. I can take these any wear, the protective rubber exterior is clutch when you accidentally drop a hard drive which does happen, and the added bonus of water resistance is great when your shooting out in the field and may come across bad weather or wet conditions.

Pricy but worth the money! I bought this because I have a lot of videos from vlogging and I didn't want to keep everything on my laptop. I had done the mistake of doing that the first time. I am able to not only put my videos and pictures on here, but also the Final Cut Pro software so that it is not taking up space on my laptop. I love this device! Also, it is one of the few external hard drives that you DON'T have to format to work with Mac's. It's so easy to use, just plug in and good to go.

For someone who drops everything, the rubbery coating that surrounds the LaCie 2TB External ..Drive, is a definite "Life Saver". It's compact, lightweight and does what it is made to do. I see why they are the choice for so many students a photographers alike. I own 2.

    Solid HD for portable use

I have been buying these drives for over ten years and have had great luck with them, even as the interface has changed and the capacities have mushroomed. My only other comment is to pay very carefully attention to the specific interface, speed and capacity are for the drive you buy. They often get misplaced (Under the wrong price tag) in the store by other customers or careless blue shirts. It’s an easy mistake to make since they all look the same... and as a result they are sometimes priced incorrectly. Buyer beware... but definitely Recommend.

    Great device, super annoying cord.

Love everything about this unit: Huge storage, super fast thunderbolt, small footprint. My only complaint may seem like a minor thing but with so many cords to tangle with this one is particularly annoying: Not long enough, too stiff, and blazing orange. You just can't hide it. Small complaint, but super annoying.

    Great Thunderbolt external hard drive

I love this drive. My MacBook Pro's hard drive was getting extremely full with 60GB of pictures spanning 20 years. I moved my entire Photo library over to this superstar and I plug it in whenever I want to review pics or work in Photos. It works equally as fast as my internal hard drive. Scrolling of pics is lightning fast. No one would ever know that it's an external drive based upon its speed.

    Overall good

I have a love/hate relationship with this hard drive, it has been great for photography but really dislike how it disconnects so easily from the point with every movement you make and its frustrating when editing a photo and you make a slight movement to the computer and it all of a sudden disconnects. I haven't lost any of my work yet but that is the most frustrating aspect of the hard drive. Other than that it has been extremely useful and easy to use.

    Juggling Hard Drives- rugged helps

    |
    |
    Posted .

When I was looking for smaller fast portables for taking my creative life on the road as I juggle data from drive to drive. I found rugged to be a necessary spec. With three of these I am able to complete my act. The supple orange rubber helps me see them then they are in the air and allows them to absorb impact for those (rare) occasions where I miss one. I constantly rotate my drives and keep three always as redundant backups when I’m the road for special projects. These are fast. And with my Mac thunderbolt 3/USBc port I can work in real time with my edits while I juggle my hard drives.

We have about 5 of these guys laying around the house and I NEVER worry about them being damaged, dropped, spilt on, NOTHING! High recommended for a rugged hard drive. The USB and thunderbolt options are MUCH better than the usb 3.0, but nonetheless, its a great external hard drive.

Bought a new iMac and used this item (along with an SSD) to upgrade my old 2011 iMac for use as guest/family room computer. After upgrade, old computer performing much better and closer to a much newer computer for normal routine tasks (email, web surfing, word processing etc,)

As a tech i needed a drive that would hold up to lots of movement and different computers. It connects easily to both mac and pc. The drive can be split to have partitions for both computer types. rugged design will hold up well to lots of movement and very quick to respond when connected.

I cannot believe that 2TB of memory now comes on this size of an external drive. As they continue to make them smaller, this will be a game changer. I am a bit concerned that the connector is hardwired into the drive, but I love the protective case, and its color, (I still dig orange things!) and the size of the external HD!

I started using LaCie's rugged drive back in Jamaica because I traveled a lot for work and needed a drive that was small in size, large capacity, and wouldn't die if it fell, that was over a decade ago and I still use them today. Very rugged, very safe, very convenient.

This external drive was an accessory to my sons Microsoft surface book. We though that this one was great having the built in protective case. He’s a senior in high school but will be going to college in the fall of 2019 so this will add the extra storage on the computer because we only purchased the 128 gb one instead of the 256 gb.

I'm a photographer and digital artist and when I travel it's hardly to have a portable HD so I can bring files with me that I've been working on and add new photos and digital art to take back home where I store them on my external LaCie Drive.
