The unit has a built in top vent that operates any time the microwave is in use. The vent blows so loud and it is very annoying. My dog actually will run out of the room when it turns on because the vent is so loud it scares him. I have read some newer over the range units will automatically turn the vent on when the unit gets hot (oven or stove top below operating creating heat)...this one is not like that. This one runs the vent on FULL blast EVERY time you use the microwave. I would not make this purchase again and would return it if I still had the box.
