Nice camera, with great quality and lots of features. What I like the most about this camera is that now I can take astonishing pictures of the Moon (there's a special feature for taking pictures of the Moon), I can even see the craters and all that!!! Also great feature called "Bird watching" for birds. And one of my favorites is the close up feature that I've been using to take great pictures of flowers! Best of all, this camera has a great price!

I love this camera. It feels great in the hands and very light and compact. One of my favorite features is the screen. It moves from its stationary position so you can position the camera wherever you want and still view how the picture will come out. The camera feels light in the hands which I like a lot. A few quips I gave with it is the menu. It's not very clear and finding a few options is a bit frustrating. The second would be the battery port. It requires 4 double AA batteries. I would have preferred a chargeable battery. But that's really all. Everything else about it is great. Great for any beginner and the pictures are beautiful with the 16 megapixels and the great zoom.

Got this because I was on vacation and the charger for my Nikon DSLR died. Needed a decent camera, that wasn't on my cell phone. I read the reviews and looked at it before, so I didn't buy this blindly, and it was on sale. I thought it would give me, as much as is possible, the feel and function of my DSLR, with the higher resolution, build and flexibility. Plus, to be blunt, I was annoyed that I couldn't use my DSLR because of the proprietary Nikon battery and charger. The only way to get even a new battery was to order it online. This took regular batteries. A plus in my book.
The good: it has the DSLR feel in that you can hold it with one hand; the zoom function works nicely and gives you a good range; doesn't weigh a ton, nice features. There are nice shooting options; and the pop-up flash is a bonus. It's easy to begin to use, particularly if you've had a DSLR before. It takes nice video and the audio with the video was pretty good. (it even has a function for noise/wind reduction) It takes batteries you can get anywhere. You can set it up to take single or continuous shots.
Now the star-reducing major annoyances. As other reviewers noted, there is no viewfinder. I didn't think this would be as big a problem as it was since the back screen adjusts for viewing angle. You can move it out and down. This is great for normal picture taking, but if you are outside in bright light, there is no angle that will make it easy to see what's on the screen or frame a shot, especially if you are trying to zoom in and out. I wound up making my own screen cover with a washcloth. There were times I just had to point the camera at something and hope it was focused and came out okay. Surprisingly, the majority did.
The second item that other reviewers noted is that the autofocus can take a long time. I've had other autofocus cameras, so there's always a bit of a lag. However, there can be a real lag if the default autofocus setting can't figure out what to focus on. This is more than lag. Drove me nuts and there were some shots I missed because it was still trying to focus and/or I couldn't set up successive shots even on the same subject. I could live with the lack of viewfinder over this lag. Can't believe the same Nikon that made the autofocus on my DSLR made this one. However, YOU CAN TURN IT OFF and/or adjust how and what it does and focuses on.
I believe the lag in autofocus in the default happened more with the extended zoom function because of the VR kicking in and it's harder to focus in the long range with camera shake. I noticed it didn't seem to be a problem at all when the camera was on a tripod. Of course, this is a zoom camera and it's a nice zoom, not a digital zoom.
That is one of the plusses for this camera, you pretty much can adjust settings, white balance, ISO, focus, flash, etc.
It was a good camera replacement for the situation and I'll use it pretty often because in some situations it makes more sense than lugging the heavy DSLR (w/additional zoom lens). The shots I did get were very good, hi-res, even the ones I shot blind because I couldn't see the screen. So, I'm not dissatisfied enough to return it and reasonably satisfied that I'll get good use out of it. Actually, if it weren't for the lack of viewfinder, it would be an awesome camera to use or carry instead of the DSLR.
On the other hand, it cannot replace the high end DSLR's. It's somewhere between the pocket cameras and that level.

This camera has been a pleasure to use and the pictures are very good. I have not learned everything that this camera can do yet but I picked it up and started taking pictures right away without any problem. I look forward to learning about all of the great features it has in the future. The only feature I have been uncomfortable with is the door to the battery and memory card area because it doesn't have a clean shut and open feel to it. The way the viewing screen is adjustable will be a plus as I use the camera in many different areas and various angles. Out of all of the cameras on the market, this one was the best choice for a small camera with quality pictures but no excessive equipment to haul around.

I have been a Nikon user for over 40 years. I went on work assignment and after checking into my hotel I realized that I forgot to pack my camera. Driving back 3 hours plus another 3 hours to get back was impossible. I found Best Buy store just next to the hotel and bought this camera. Great camera, fully automatic, takes great pictures. Flash range is quite good. Worked fine for me because most of my photos needed flash to illuminate dark parts of buildings. The camera has a red focus assist light which illuminates the objects in view when you are in total darkness. This helps camera to focus on the illuminated objects and then use the flash while taking pictures. I took over 1000 pictures in 4 days. All of them came out great. The camera has video mode. I used it too. Video brings out some subtle details that are not visible in still images. I filled several SD cards in the entire process. I use 16 GB SD cards and the images were set to highest resolution. I love to attach external flash but this camera does not have a flash boot. It has built in Wi-Fi and NFC which I have not used yet. My work does not need these features.
This camera does not have manual mode. It does the entire work of setting up for the imaging. I love to have manual adjustments and this one can not. Therefore I am giving only 4 stars.
One issue arose. I dropped the camera down and the fall dented the aluminum ring around the lens. The camera continued to work fine. However I was disappointed that my new camera looked slightly dented. So upon returning home I phoned Nikon. They would not sell me a replacement ring. Instead I was given an authorized repair shop to contact. This shop is located in Connecticut. I phoned them. They said they will not sell me the ring but can replace it for which I would have to send the camera over. Guess what, their minimum repair charge was $100 plus whatever the price of the part. Knowing Nikon this part may cost another $50 or a $100. So I did what any person would do. Live with the dented ring. I guess Nikon does not want to fix these low end cameras. Too bad. I still love Nikon. I still have my original Nikon F - Photomic prism. I don't do any 35 mm film work though.

I purchased the Coolpix L840 for my wife for Christmas as an upgrade to her cell phone camera and a point and shoot 8.0mp, 3x optical zoom camera. My main interest was in purchasing an inexpensive camera that still produced high quality pictures with a particular emphasis on the amount of zoom that it had to offer. We have a pair of great horned owls which roost and nest several hundred yards away making it difficult to get a good picture without a decent zoom. This camera has far exceeded our expectations, in fact, the product review just scratches the surface of its features and capabilities. The instruction manual is detailed and very precise so you are not left in the dark trying to understand all of its features using a trial and error method. Downloading your pictures to a PC is very easy. This may not be the camera for a professional but if you're a novice photographer like my wife who also deserves high quality photos and at a reasonable price, this is the camera for you. You're always going to find good reviews and bad reviews for no matter what you buy but I would certainly recommend this camera to a friend.

I didn't realize that it used AA batteries instead of a rechargeable camera battery. There's a longer response time between pictures than I anticipated, but overall I'm happy with the camera. It makes very clear pictures and is easy to use.
