    My first DSLR

    Posted .

After being on the fence for many months, I decided to pull the trigger and purchase this camera. I also glanced over at dpreview.com's cameras in the $500-900 range to see what their best option would be. This camera came up on top. As a beginner, I knew nothing on proper handling. But after a while, and a quick talk with a friend, I started toying around and seeing how the camera perform. I did some quick test shots and the photos came out well. But when I placed my Gundam model that I've completed several months ago, it looked quite different than when taking a picture with a smartphone. I guess one could say it's like night and day. I'm still trying to learn the ropes of this camera. But it left me with good impressions. I'm a bit disappointed that the WiFi capability is limited to the smartphone app. But I guess that's something that I'll either deal with or not use at all. I'm now looking into 1 or 2 extra lens, a fast SD card, and an extra battery. For now, I am a DSLR noob in training. I shall slowly learn how to make this camera shine and maybe I'll get some nice nature shots.

Great camera even for a beginner

I have been using a point and shoot camera for years because I liked to take pictures and could finally afford to invest in a DSLR camera. I was looking at a few different ones and had decided on the D3400. The Best Buy salesman recommended the D5500 instead. It was $100 more but had more features and better glass. After buying a few books and finding some cheat sheets on the internet for manual settings, I am very happy with this camera. My photos turn out great. I would definitely recommend this camera. I have attached 2 photos I took with it using the standard lens that came with it.

I've had the camera for a month now and taken about 250 pics some wildlife or scenery and many family pictures. The pictures are pretty good, very few bad pics, all due to me learning how to use the camera. It's small body size and bright colors sold me on this camera

As I beginner I was nervous about getting too complicated a camera. This camera comes with a lot of bells and whistles but I can take my time to learn it. It was easy to just put it on auto and point and shoot. Got some great pictures too. Would highly recommend it.

This is my first experience with a dslr and I'm hooked already. Way easier to learn than expected and takes amazing pics. Just what I needed to get great pics at my kids football and basketball games. I love taking pics of everything with this camera.

This is my first DSLR camera and it is perfect for my needs. It has great low light quality, the kit lenses are good quality, and it has been easy to learn how to use. I think it is a great camera and I would highly recommend it!

Love this camera, shopped around for most entry level DSLR cameras and this one was on sale for a great price that I couldn't pass on. The touch screen is a huge help as well as the moveable screen on the back. Great camera, you will not be disappointed.

I exchanged my new d5600 18-55vr kit for this d5500 18-55vr 70-300mm bundle and saved $200, which I used to purchase an extra lens! Excellent product.

    Great camera for EVERYONE

This is my first DSLR camera, And I'm very impressed! I use this for photography and Vlogging and it is tremendous. It has a microphone jack so that you can use an external microphone. It is also capable of capturing 1080p video at 60 frames per second. This camera is a steal with this particular package at $599. I am very happy with this camera… Especially at this particular price point of $599.

    Fantastic Camera

I have owned a NIKON DS70 camera for over 12 years. I have traveled the world getting great terrific pictures. It is a great camera has always given me excellent results. The problem is the DS70 technology is old and the camera lacks many of the features I wanted. The NIKON 5500 is an even better camera and its technology is up to date. The 5500 also has so many useful features that I find useful I can't list them all. One of my favorites and most useful features for me is being able to fame pictures through either the eye view piece or the view plate on the back of the camera. What makes the eye (view) piece or the view plate on the back of the camera. What makes the view plate special is the ability to twist it into various viewing positions. For me that is most important when taking low close-up shots or photographing an action sequence over the heads of spectators standing in front of me. Not only is this a camera with special features which will be enjoyed by the ameature as well as the experienced photographer --- the Best Buy price was easy on the pocket book.

    Great Bang for Your Buck

When I began looking for a new camera I reviewed several Nikon, Canon and Sony cameras (although I probably wouldn't have gone with anything other than Nikon. I'm already invested in that ecosystem). I wanted something small and light but with all the features I needed. I found the D5500. I was considering the D5600 but I don't need Snapbridge and got all the feature and functionality of the 5600 for much less on sale with the 5500. I have used the D5500 to shoot a couple events with great success. The image quality is outstanding. The only negatives I have come up with are minor. The frames it shoots per second is kind of low but on par with other cameras in this class. I shot a rodeo a week ago and more frames per second would have been nice but I still got some great shots and the people I was doing the event for were very happy with the photos. This camera was below my budget for a new camera allowing me some extra money for a couple fast lenses and I don't feel like I sacrificed much purchasing this instead of a higher priced unit.

    Nikon D5500 DSLR

I've had the opportunity to use both the Canon and Nikon DSLRs and find the features and the quality of shots in the Nikon to edge out the Canon. My camera purchase was for use as a family camera. That means I needed to find a body that would be comfortable to hold and use by my wife who has small hands and my kids who also have small hands. The fact that the Nikon is smaller and lighter than the Canon T6i and the touch screen features the camera offers made this the perfect choice. The shots are excellent, the various scene modes are what my wife and kids are used to and they really like the ability to use the live screen to shot pictures without having to use the view finder. All in all and win win on all sides. Great camera at a great price.

    Love my new D5500

Although some would say, the size and weight are why the camera is at this price point. For me, that's a double win. I LOVE that it's lighter in weight for wearing while I go hiking. The display on the back of the camera is fabulous, it's intuitive to operate. Though I have used Nikons in the past, but not digital. The telephoto lens is terrific, the standard lens is a little too standard, but I'm working with it until I have the money to replace it with a better lens. Additionally, I purchased a 50mm lens to go with my kit which is what I needed for most of the shots I take for my work. Be sure to purchase a high-quality filter to protect your lenses right away.

I used to do a lot of film photography (had 2 F bodies, lenses, bulk loaded my own rolls of B&W). Stepped away from photography for a while until l this. Okay, it's not a full frame sensor, but it's not over $1k either. My only complaint is that the telephotos they bundle are never VR lenses, so do yourself a favor and buy a good VR telephoto down the line.

Great Value Package - Solid Camera

    Posted .

Have always owned and shot with Nikon since the 80's. Was looking to upgrade my primary camera and saw the D5500 package for sale. Nice lens package included and the 5500 is typical Nikon quality. Solid build, nicely engineered. Great everyday semi-pro/amateur shooter. Purchased an 18-140mm lens for everyday use and have a 3300 DSLR for the 35-80mm lens and 75-300 depending on situation. Love the camera. Nothing but positives to say about it. Highly recommended value.

    Great Camera - Deceptive Advertising

The camera itself is a great priced DSLR. Couldn't be happier with the camera right out of the box. Unfortunately, most of the product photos show an AF-S 18-55mm lense, while the kit comes with an AF-P 18-55mm lense. Also, the kit did not come with a lense bag or lense hood as pictured.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this

Absolutely love it so far. It is my first DSLR and love opportunities to go use it. It was fairly easy to learn all the buttons and navigate the menus/options. Love how Nikon set it up. I highly recommend the Nikon 5500 for Dummies books to learn the ins and outs of the camera. It is cheap on Kindle and written very well. Study all this up and you will really start to understand how to take some great pics. Auto/Scene mode also take great photos, but its so much fun manipulating a scene with the light you have available.

I purchased this camera right before my daughter's high school graduation - had never used a DSLR camera before - it was so easy to work straight out of the box! I got great pictures that came out clear. I used the long lens and got awesome shots of her receiving her diploma on the football field from the nosebleed section. I am still learning about the camera and have found lots of useful videos on YouTube and from Best Buys emails. So happy I bought it! Looking forward to taking lots of pictures!!

    Great Camera for a Beginner

Purchased this for Mother’s Day for me wife. She had a micro 4/3rds before but really wanted a viewfinder and something larger. She is an absolute beginner and shoots mostly in auto. The picture quality is amazing. She uses it mostly for sports (Baseball and Basketball) for our Son. She gets frequent comments from friends on the quality of her photos. It was a great investment for a unit for an amateur but still give her room to grow if she wants
