After being on the fence for many months, I decided to pull the trigger and purchase this camera. I also glanced over at dpreview.com's cameras in the $500-900 range to see what their best option would be. This camera came up on top.
As a beginner, I knew nothing on proper handling. But after a while, and a quick talk with a friend, I started toying around and seeing how the camera perform. I did some quick test shots and the photos came out well. But when I placed my Gundam model that I've completed several months ago, it looked quite different than when taking a picture with a smartphone. I guess one could say it's like night and day.
I'm still trying to learn the ropes of this camera. But it left me with good impressions. I'm a bit disappointed that the WiFi capability is limited to the smartphone app. But I guess that's something that I'll either deal with or not use at all. I'm now looking into 1 or 2 extra lens, a fast SD card, and an extra battery. For now, I am a DSLR noob in training. I shall slowly learn how to make this camera shine and maybe I'll get some nice nature shots.

I have been using a point and shoot camera for years because I liked to take pictures and could finally afford to invest in a DSLR camera. I was looking at a few different ones and had decided on the D3400. The Best Buy salesman recommended the D5500 instead. It was $100 more but had more features and better glass. After buying a few books and finding some cheat sheets on the internet for manual settings, I am very happy with this camera. My photos turn out great. I would definitely recommend this camera. I have attached 2 photos I took with it using the standard lens that came with it.

I've had the camera for a month now and taken about 250 pics some wildlife or scenery and many family pictures. The pictures are pretty good, very few bad pics, all due to me learning how to use the camera. It's small body size and bright colors sold me on this camera

As I beginner I was nervous about getting too complicated a camera. This camera comes with a lot of bells and whistles but I can take my time to learn it. It was easy to just put it on auto and point and shoot. Got some great pictures too. Would highly recommend it.

This is my first experience with a dslr and I'm hooked already. Way easier to learn than expected and takes amazing pics. Just what I needed to get great pics at my kids football and basketball games. I love taking pics of everything with this camera.

This is my first DSLR camera and it is perfect for my needs. It has great low light quality, the kit lenses are good quality, and it has been easy to learn how to use. I think it is a great camera and I would highly recommend it!

This camera is a great camera! Let's you take pictures with rich colors, great videos. Good camera for vlogging. The only thing I didnt like is the focus sometimes will change from picture to picture if selected automatically. Also the 70-300 mm lenses doesn't have digital stabilization. Besides that, the camera is easy to use, have different options in scenes, and it has a really fast shutter.

I have owned a NIKON DS70 camera for over 12 years. I have traveled the world getting great terrific pictures. It is a great camera has always given me excellent results. The problem is the DS70 technology is old and the camera lacks many of the features I wanted.
The NIKON 5500 is an even better camera and its technology is up to date. The 5500 also has so many useful features that I find useful I can't list them all.
One of my favorites and most useful features for me is being able to fame pictures through either the eye view piece or the view plate on the back of the camera. What makes the eye (view) piece or the view plate on the back of the camera. What makes the view plate special is the ability to twist it into various viewing positions. For me that is most important when taking low close-up shots or photographing an action sequence over the heads of spectators standing in front of me.
Not only is this a camera with special features which will be enjoyed by the ameature as well as the experienced photographer --- the Best Buy price was easy on the pocket book.

When I began looking for a new camera I reviewed several Nikon, Canon and Sony cameras (although I probably wouldn't have gone with anything other than Nikon. I'm already invested in that ecosystem). I wanted something small and light but with all the features I needed. I found the D5500. I was considering the D5600 but I don't need Snapbridge and got all the feature and functionality of the 5600 for much less on sale with the 5500. I have used the D5500 to shoot a couple events with great success. The image quality is outstanding. The only negatives I have come up with are minor. The frames it shoots per second is kind of low but on par with other cameras in this class. I shot a rodeo a week ago and more frames per second would have been nice but I still got some great shots and the people I was doing the event for were very happy with the photos. This camera was below my budget for a new camera allowing me some extra money for a couple fast lenses and I don't feel like I sacrificed much purchasing this instead of a higher priced unit.

Easy to use with a ton of features. for beginners and advanced, with the ability of multiple different settings and options. I am very satisfied with this purchase, it is big enough to show you care about photography and small enough to fit in my tiny hands comfortably.

I've had the opportunity to use both the Canon and Nikon DSLRs and find the features and the quality of shots in the Nikon to edge out the Canon. My camera purchase was for use as a family camera. That means I needed to find a body that would be comfortable to hold and use by my wife who has small hands and my kids who also have small hands. The fact that the Nikon is smaller and lighter than the Canon T6i and the touch screen features the camera offers made this the perfect choice. The shots are excellent, the various scene modes are what my wife and kids are used to and they really like the ability to use the live screen to shot pictures without having to use the view finder. All in all and win win on all sides. Great camera at a great price.

Although some would say, the size and weight are why the camera is at this price point. For me, that's a double win. I LOVE that it's lighter in weight for wearing while I go hiking. The display on the back of the camera is fabulous, it's intuitive to operate. Though I have used Nikons in the past, but not digital. The telephoto lens is terrific, the standard lens is a little too standard, but I'm working with it until I have the money to replace it with a better lens. Additionally, I purchased a 50mm lens to go with my kit which is what I needed for most of the shots I take for my work. Be sure to purchase a high-quality filter to protect your lenses right away.

I purchased this camera right before my daughter's high school graduation - had never used a DSLR camera before - it was so easy to work straight out of the box! I got great pictures that came out clear. I used the long lens and got awesome shots of her receiving her diploma on the football field from the nosebleed section. I am still learning about the camera and have found lots of useful videos on YouTube and from Best Buys emails. So happy I bought it! Looking forward to taking lots of pictures!!

I am new to photography. So I wanted a good entry level camera with good lenses. Its been 3 weeks now since I bought this camera and just works great. Easy to use and learn controls. Good image quality. Friends told me to buy AF-S lenses but for me AF-P lenses are working great. Both the lenses are new from new Nikon line. Bestbuy gave me lense cleaning kit of Insignia. Good quality product. I definitely recommend it.

I purchased this as my first DSLR. I wanted something with good reviews and would be great as a beginner just starting off, but didn't want to worry about having to upgrade too soon. It's easy to navigate and takes great photos, now that I have the hang of what the settings mean. I'm still learning so I can see this camera will grow with me over time and I can see this lasting me for several years.
