I upgraded from my A7III and all I can say is wow, just wow.
I shoot on the highest quality glass from Sony and this thing is an absolute monster of a performer. 90mm G, took a picture of a paper towel to see what kind of detail I can get because of how sharp the lens is. I zoom in on the picture and see all of the fibers, crisp in detail. I put on my 100-400GM, taking pictures of buildings 7 or so miles away, still see details, etc. I cannot express how much detail I can get from these photos, it's absolutely absurd. I've only just gotten the camera today and it has already impressed me. I can't wait to play with all of the features this camera has to offer.
The 8 stop IBIS is definitely there, especially when compared to my A7III. Zoomed in at 400mm the camera had virtually no shake whatsoever, it's an improvement and very much welcomed.
The screen is uncontested now.
It flips, it tilts, and it does everything anyone ever wanted.
It definitely looks nice and crisp, so I have no complaints, and neither should anyone else now.
Definitely expensive, was it worth it? That depends on your needs as a photographer, but I don't regret getting this one bit, it is definitely worth the upgrade if you're jumping from an older Alpha camera. There's so much to cover about this camera, but I have to get to all of that before I can even do that.
Downsides? Battery seems to drain a little quicker, but I think that's to be expected with everything you're getting. Also Sony includes an actual charger for the battery, not that wall plug one with the micro USB cable that everyone dislikes. So thank you Sony, I've wanted that forever and you provided, it was much needed and I believe people will be happier.
To summarize, this is one heck of a camera, I already am in love with it and can't wait to see how it will endure time, I feel confident that it will serve my needs for years to come. Is it worth it? If you're using an A1 / A7RIV then maybe pass, unless you really want those new features (they're pretty great). If you're coming from an A7III like I am, go for it. I can already see the night and day difference in performance.
We're happy to hear that you love your A7RV. Sony's commitment to customer satisfaction is our top priority. We hope you enjoy all the features your camera has to offer. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience! - Glenn

The Sony A7R V is hands-down one of the best cameras I’ve ever used. The image quality is absolutely stunning — that 61-megapixel full-frame sensor captures every tiny detail with incredible sharpness and clarity. Whether I’m shooting landscapes, portraits, or product photography, the results are consistently breathtaking. What really stands out is the autofocus and subject tracking — it’s next-level. The AI-based tracking locks onto eyes, faces, animals, and even objects with unmatched precision. It feels like the camera knows exactly what I want to focus on, making it super reliable even in fast-moving situations. The articulating screen is another huge plus. It’s bright, crisp, and extremely flexible, allowing me to shoot from virtually any angle — low, high, or even from the side — without any struggle. The touchscreen interface is smooth and intuitive too, making the overall experience seamless. Overall, the Sony A7R V is a powerhouse. It delivers professional-level performance, incredible resolution, and cutting-edge features in one beautifully designed body. If you’re serious about photography, this camera is worth every penny!

Significant upgrade from the RIV

When the a7RV first came out I did not see enough reason to upgrade from the RIV. I was wrong, this definitely was worth the upgrade. Without even using CF card the write speed to the same SD cards is night and day. I had a bottleneck with my RIV doing any burst imaging. 2nd additional improvement was the improved autofocus and tracking. It is noticeable how I can focus in and the subject tracks and remains in focus.
I never used the LCD screen on my previous cameras, but then again most were either static or at most would flip up at an angle. The fully articulating screen I now see as a nice improvement.
I am also finding with the new software & UI this model has significant improvement in customization that I need not have with the RIV (or at least easy access to the customization menus).
As my imaging moved from just landscapes to include more and more wildlife, I may initially had thought the more expensive A1 was best suited for me. No idea or plans for release of the RVI, but for me the issue is moot. The improved AF, subject recognition, tracking, and write speeds that includes now CF Express A, I can see this model truly lasting me for years.

Mirrorless perfection

Coming from the Sony a7RIVa body, I was already familiar with the amazing resolution of the 61-Megapixel sensor. The newer A7RV keeps that sensor, but there were just enough upgrades with the a7RV to consider replacing the older body. I think the major upgrade has to do with the improved autofocus. The focus on the A7RIV was no slouch, but the improvements due to their addition of a separate focusing module in the camera alone was enough for me to upgrade. The new autofocus system covers more of the sensor, and refined subject recognition makes focus tracking ridiculously good, even in low light.
Beyond the autofocus, Sony made some noteworthy improvements in the body design and function as well, especially with the fully-articulating LCD screen with touch control, improved high-resolution viewfinder, and also the improved menu system. I must admit that Sony made this camera highly configurable, which also adds its complexity. Because of this, the flexibility to customize the camera allows adaptability to fit the needs of just about every photographer. Other improvements include improved data handling with options for image file compression, as the files sizes can get quite large because of its 61-megapixel sensor. The a7RV also added a new card format to better handle the large files sizes, allowing rapid shooting without buffer delays. The two card slots can handle both the standard SD cards, as well as the newer faster CFExpress Type A cards. They are more expensive, but the faster cards are necessary in some cases to get the most out of the camera, such as recording 8K video. If you are a still image shooter, then fast SD cards can usually suffice. About the only negative I can mention is that I wish it could use the cheaper faster Type B CFExpress cards.
The camera comes complete with a battery and external charger, the customary strap with the Sony logo, a USB-C cable to charge the battery inside the camera as well as transfer data to your PC or laptop.
As an advanced amateur photographer, I find the Sony a7RV to be the perfect camera, providing almost medium format quality. Match that with Sony’s world class array of lenses and the ability to use third-party lenses as well, and you have a powerful image and video machine that can handle just about everything you can throw at it in a small mirrorless body. I am excited to own this camera and really glad I made the upgrade.

Innovative design and a wide array of options for both photo and video. Although the video is more of an after thought (by design) as they are less “professional” specs due to the hurdle of such a large megapixel count. You CAN still make great videos with this, it’s just not really the best Sony camera for that endeavor. In general, you have to be more thoughtful in your choices with this camera. A caveat with high megapixels is lower max ISO. However, the rules you’re probably used to with shutter speed in relation to your focal length can be broken when shooting in less ideal light thanks the IBIS which is so remarkably good. If you’re after a more casual camera that even handedly provides decent photo AND video specs, I recommend the a7 IV.

If you're shopping for this camera then you know what you're getting into. Image Quality is as good as it can get for full frame mirrorless. If you're comparing this to the A7R4, get this.
With this A7R5 I am able to gain 3-5 stops of extra light with the new IBIS, and the flippy screen is incredible. This thing is a quality of life blessing coming from the A7R4.

I recently had the pleasure of using the Sony A7R IV, and I must say, it's an extraordinary camera that exceeds expectations. The 61-megapixel sensor delivers stunning image quality, capturing every detail with remarkable clarity. Its autofocus system is lightning-fast and incredibly accurate, making it perfect for action shots and wildlife photography. What impresses me the most is the camera's dynamic range, providing exceptional performance in various lighting conditions. The ergonomic design and intuitive interface make it a joy to use, and the added features like 4K video capability and high ISO performance are just the icing on the cake. The Sony A7R IV isn't just a camera; it's a powerhouse tool for any photographer looking to push their creative boundaries.

Updated from riii and have not been disappointed, the autofocus on this body is phenomenal, huge upgrade. Going from 42 mp to 61 is worth it except for the size of the files. Expensive yes, worth it in my opinion.

Coming from a Sony A7iii (with grip), I had very high expectations when purchasing this camera. I will use this almost exclusively as a nature photography tool, and already I can appreciate the focus abilities, resolution, and ability to track many subjects - especially birds in flight. It seems as if there is almost endless ability to program the buttons and features, but the design of this camera is less refined than that of my A7iii. The biggest drawback is the placement of the movie button where C1 used to be (and visa versa). Luckily I was able to program the movie button to function the way I want so it is consistent with the function on my A7iii. However, if I change the C1 function to act as the movie button, the grip will now start movie recording when pressing C1. Therefore I had to set the C1 function and Movie button as the same so the battery grip functions the way I want the C1 button to work. The battery grips for these cameras are not cheap, but I won't use these bodies without them. Herein also lies my gripe with Sony design. The grip on this A7RV is nowhere near as refined as the grip with the A7iii. The way the grip fits with the body on the A7RV is not well designed - almost as if it wasn't made for it. A real disappointment considering the cost and button placement. I know I'll come to love it eventually, but the design is a bit to be desired. This camera is an energy hog, so the grip is a necessity for me to have the power without changing batteries mid-shoot. You will have to check your post processing software to make sure it is compatible with the latest 'R' raw files. I had to update my software, but that is a minor gripe. The viewfinder is spectacular, and a real joy to use in the field!

Love this camera! A liitle adventure came along with this purchase, in that when i first picked it up from Best Buy, i got it home, opened the A7R5 box, set up the camera, took it to a magazine photo shoot, and while downloading the compressed RAW files, i wondered why they were all 33MB, instead of 61MB. As it turns out, someone at Best Buy had switched cameras in the box, and it was actually an A7IV. I wasn't pleased. Best Buy gave me my A7RV once i returned to the Palmdale store.

This is my 2nd Sony A7R V and it is an absolute monster. The kind of camera that makes you look at your old gear like, “Wow, we really struggled together, huh?” The autofocus is sticky in the best way, the files are crisp enough to make you emotional, and the dynamic range is basically wizardry. It handles weddings, portraits, fast moments, low light, whatever you throw at it, like it was built for chaos. If you want a camera that makes you feel unstoppable, this is the one.

What can I say about this camera? Coming from an A7R II, the upgrade is absolutely night and day. The autofocus is incredible, the level of customization is next-level, and the battery life is outstanding.
As always with mirrorless cameras, the weight is a bonus—it’s light but still feels solid in your hands. It’s fast, sharp, and just plain impressive. The 8K capabilities are a bit overkill for me (you’ll need a compatible memory card and a powerful computer to handle it), but it’s nice to have the option.

A very complex camera with functions for all photographers but only a few will use all! I have used Sony cameras since '14 with the A7S where using adapters I used old film lenses even captured a lunar eclipse with a Canon FD telephoto lens and feel in love with astro Milky ways and in '17 the A7Rii with IBIS were I captured Antelope Canyon handheld while bracketing 3 @ +/- 2 ev using the new FE 12-24mm f/4 while other had to use sticks and most at only 35mm. and the cameras have apps on camera that make them just a valuable as the day they came out! The A7RV you need the 900 page book to know all or most all functions, a lot to keep in your head while out and about. It's noise control at high ISO's is equal to the A7SM3 as well as its video powers if not better. I still have all my old Sony's and an almost complete collection of lenses and still use Film lenses at times. I am not a gear hog but want the abilities I see today to capture. Bottom line the everyday camera for anything but start with a A7RM2 to get your feet wet you may never go higher it is also that great. All other makers have been behind the 8 ball and have not caught up yet. Sony sensors are in most all cell phones as well as processors that should mean something.
