    A little flakey

This unit has a number of idiosyncrasies. You have to cycle the power off and on again before the computer will recognize discs inserted into the device. If you have 2 drives mounted you can't unmount just a single drive. If you eject just a single drive and remove it the second drive will also be unmounted and you will get a warning that the second disc drive was improperly removed. The unit will take the drive(s) offline at random intervals for no apparent reason. (This usually doesn't happen until the drives have been mounted for at least a few hours but makes it a real pain to do overnight backups.) If you're using the unit for temporary storage or transferring files it's okay, but I wouldn't trust it to be able to make backup copies overnight without going offline. I have two of these units, but only because I really need this functionality and I can't find any alternatives locally. I wouldn't have bought the second one if I could find a reasonably priced (or indeed any) alternative in the area. If it weren't for the randomly going offline I give this 3/5 stars and a lukewarm 'buy' recommendation. I'm running this on MacPros using OS 10.10.4 (Yosemite).

I bought this to utilize some SATA hard drives I had switched to SSD drives on my home built. It worked great, I had all of my music on one and all my Windows backup on another, then about I don't know 3 months ago - kaput, just stopped working. I thought it was my machine, and it was getting a little long in the tooth ~8 years. Pulled the drives and plugged them into a universal cable I have for fixing friends machines. Both drives fired up. Granted it was only $50, but with 2 kids in college 50 is money. I would do some research and see if you can find another device.

My review for this drive would be better if I would be able to use. However, the 3.0 USB card that I recently purchased that was quote guaranteed to work with windows 10 has yet to work other than that I have nothing negative to say. I will say that the instructions that come with it are quite thorough. The drives insert and the jack quite easily. Just note to self make sure you know where the eject button is. The packaging is green equals very reduced so there's very little to throw away. And also the power cord as well as the USB cable are all included and are not as friendly as some products have previously included.

    Not good for two drives

The dual Enclosure worked initially for two drives, but eventually one drive wasn't being recognized and eventually both drives became corrupted. Luckily I had recovery software , so I didn't lose much data, but it took a long time. I had two drives 3Tb and 6 TB drives and both were WD green drives. Since I had the enclosure over the 15 days return policy, I was unable to return it. I using it now with only the 6TB drive and it works fine with only one drive.

Only used with one 3.5 inch hard drive. Purchased in August 2017 and it went out on January 2018. While it worked, it worked great. Good speeds and no problems. It stopped working one day. Tried connecting it to different PCs with different cables and no luck. The drive spins up and then shut offs. The hard drive works in different enclosures. Avoid it if you can.

I thought I would get more than 2 years of use not everyday but when I needed it. It was more of a part time backup and now it's dead. The unit was hot to the touch and we all know what that means, fried, shortage, burned up, no power at all. Again it worked for what I used it for but not as long as I would have liked for it to have lasted. I've decided not to waist time calling the company and go through the hassle of explaining how, what and when did it stop working. This was based on trying to create an account on their webpage and it went nowhere, still waiting on the confirmation email, nothing. So for the price I'll try another brand and see how long a different brand will last,

I had a drive with a bad boot sector and this utility found and mounted it right away. The music, text and picture files transferred to the new drives easily but the zip archives were corrupt. And after moving about 25% of the music files were corrupted. I fixed those with chkdsk and with fileassassin I was able to move the zip archives to the new drive and open them successfully. So while it worked it worked well..... after getting my files it started spontaneously mounting and dismounting itself kind of like when an android charging port goes bad. If I would unplug it the machine would recognize the drive, but only for a second before it would dismount. I returned it and exchanged it for the insignia brand.

Did not work on my older computer so I had to take old hard drive out and take to newer computer and clone side by side hooked through a USB. When cloning was completed, it did not give me any readings of perfect clone or any mistakes. So I had to install it to see the results. Luckily it cloned with no problems. If any problems, I would have wasted my time installing the new cloned hard drive since I received no status reports. I think the price was too much and I do not recommend this product!!! I think there are much better out there!!! Also online, I tried to update the cloning program and I was not authorized???? Hummmmmm???? There was a update but I could not get it.

I was a fan of these HardDrive docks, but I've come to understand why many people call these type of cradles HardDrive Toasters. Drives to get awfully hot when seated in operation for extended periods. But the biggest issue is that I've had two units both die, just simply won't connect with USB-3. Sometimes USB-2 would work, but that obviates their "high speed" back-up/clone function. So no, seek out a different brand. I've found some great ones with USB-3 ports on the front. Sorry Thermaltake.

This seems to be a case of Operator Error though I only have an average understanding of technology. I had 5 computers of various ages that I wanted to wipe the drives clean. I guess at least 1 only 6 years old. This device only read the drives with newer connections. So, as I said, I didn't understand what the description was and wasted about 3 hours of my life looking up youtube videos, and going to the manufacturers website to figure it out. Finally, I brought it back and they said my stuff was old.

BETTER CABLES WILL MAKE IT BETTER

The device has a nice approach versus conventional cables by utilizing a docking station but for universally compatibility the usb and power cable should be items that can be replace easily. The USB cable could use a USB3 cable instead of the proprietary one included. The power cable could also should be review for improvements since if you loose the cable you stuck with a docking station with no power. If they made something this cool they could improve it with the suggestions written.

Set up was easy, I purchased this unit to replace my old unit and it stop working after one use. My first unit did not work on SSD's, it only worked on a normal hard drive . I purchased this umit to upgrade my computer to an SSD. I return the unit and i will purchase another unit in the future.

    When It Does Work....

When it actually does work correctly it’s great. I’ve used it a couple of times so far and unfortunately it randomly disconnects itself. It has happened while attempting to transfer a large batch of files and also while attempting to do a system backup of a server. After reading more reviews of this same device throughtout the web, I’ve seen the same complaints. Buyers be warned

I generally read reviews, but I thought I could trust Thermaltake. Used to create a few HD images and it died after the 10th image or so. Got a replacement and now i'm waiting for it to die again. After it died, I read some reviews online, and everybody says the same thing. I wish BestBuy would take it off the product list or Thermaltake would recall the product and offer a replacement.

We made the mistake of relying on the recommendation of the sales staff and geek squad rep. No complete instructions come with the docking station and the rep said"this isn't the model we use, but they really do a good job"

I have used this to read several drives in the past few weeks. I find that it doesn't work with lots of drives and have been better off using a simple cable to get the job done.
