Turtle Beach has dropped the ball when it comes to the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded controller for the PS5. While I can appreciate certain features, it ultimately let me down during my time spent testing it.
Right out of the box, there is no denying that this controller is built well, and offers quite a few innovative features for specialized types of gameplay. The modular design, and the inclusion of swappable controller pieces, ensures that if you need a controller well suited for FPS or fighting games, you are definitely covered. During my testing, I found most aspects of the controller to be well made and functional. The thumb sticks, d-pad, and face buttons were all satisfactory, yet not exactly leaps and bounds over the stock PS5 controller. This isn’t to say that they are bad, just that I’m unsure if the premium price of the Victrix is actually justified considering the quality (when compared to stock).
Additionally, the controller itself feels good, with nice grip sections, good ergonomics, and a decent weight. I also appreciate that you can use this controller either wired, or wireless, via the included Bluetooth module that plugs into one of your PS5’s usb slots. I played primarily on Bluetooth; setup was a simple plug and play, and I never had any issues with the connection dropping out or lagging.
All of this is fine, except there are some noticeable problems with this controller, that only seem even worse when you factor in the ultra-premium price tag.
First, the programmable buttons on the back of the controller. I have relatively large hands, and it felt like I would accidentally press one of these buttons AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT while playing a game. Just due to how you naturally hold and grip a controller, you are pretty much guaranteed to have your fingers resting against, and possibly engaging, these programmable triggers. This was so annoying, and such an immediate problem, that I quickly disabled the buttons as soon as I could. I also question how useful these would be in chaotic, frenetic gameplay sessions; pressing the wrong button at the wrong time is pretty antithetical to how most competitive gamers play. Because of this, these triggers really miss the mark, and I just don’t see a situation where they would be beneficial rather than a nuisance.
Second, I absolutely do not believe that the L2 and R2 triggers on this controller are an improvement over the stock unit. When I first tried to use this controller, R2 would simply not work. At all. While I tried to find an instruction manual (these only come with "instructions" that consist of 2 hieroglyphs and basically no text), I even scanned the QR code in the booklet, only to be taken to the website's product page. Well, I was hoping it would take me to a manual, but I couldn't locate one on the website, either. So, I went back to the controller, and noticed these "switches" (?) on the back of the controller. I messed with them, and they seemed to unlock the R2 trigger. Honestly, even when it was working, it does not feel good at all, and I seriously doubt they managed to incorporate the active trigger effects from the Sony controller. Apparently the marketing claims these triggers have some proprietary tech, but when they work this poorly, I just don't buy it. So, yeah, not a great impression on part of a controller that is central to being to play almost any game, ESPECIALLY first person shooters.
Third, this controller is missing some very basic features that the OEM unit from Sony has always been equipped with. Built in microphone? Not here. Built in speaker? Not here. Vibration? Sadly, not even THIS is here. (Haven't we had controllers with vibration since the late 90s?) At first, I was trying to justify the reasoning behind this model packing less features than the stock PS5 controller. And then I really thought about it. How does this make sense? This controller is priced at an eye-watering premium, a price so high it should make the stock controller look like a cheap toy. Instead, it packs LESS features, and introduces buttons/switches that at best are an annoyance, and at worst, a hindrance to your performance.
Now I know some folks might really need the modular pieces this controller provides, and to those people, I’d say this is probably a great option for you. I think it’s pretty neat that this offers a dedicated option for fighting game aficionados, and I’m not really sure there is another controller on the market with these modular features.
But to everyone else who is just looking for a great controller for their PS5, this isn’t it. When you exclude the modular pieces, and the inclusion of “higher quality” thumb sticks, there is absolutely nothing this controller does better than stock, and it costs a considerable amount more for the experience. I really don’t care what Turtle Beach’s rationale is: if it costs over twice as much than the go-to option, this should have an ABUNDANCE of features not found on the competition AND stock functionality, NOT a severe deficit of basic controller features that we’ve had for years.
If you are absolutely determined to buy this controller, just be aware of what you are getting. If you don’t need highly specialized thumb sticks or fighting game set ups, I can say with almost complete certainty that the regular controller that comes with your PS5 is the superior option for your gaming needs.
Final Score: 2 stars – 1 for overall build quality, and 1 for the niche, specialized features.

I'll be honest, my usual secondary controllers for guests use tended to be...of lesser quality that the original. This is not that. The Turtle Beach Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded boasts features that the original Dualsense does not have. Out of the box, I was a bit surprised by how light it was.In the hand, it also feels more like an Xbox controller. I play the intermittent Xbox, but as a lifetime Playstation user it did feel a bit foreign. That being said, it feels great in the hand. You can use this wirelessly with use of the dongle (which is not Bluetooth but through a 2.4 GHz connection with low latency) or wired which I appreciate they offer both options. It does lack the haptics and adaptive triggers of the original for whatever reason. Sometimes, the lack of small features such as this was noticeable especially playing familiar games. This likely is a licensing issue with Sony.
The modular aspect was very interesting to me. You can flip the modules to resemble the Xbox controller. You can add the 6 button module which is actually amazing for fighter games. Changing out the modules are simple. There are a couple screws involved but this really shouldn't deter anyone. One of the big draws of this controller is the Hall Effect. This means that they use magnets instead of mechanical parts. This theoretically prevents stick drift and increased durability and longevity. To me, that is actually a very valuable part of this controller. I have definitely spent more than the price of this controller for multiple replacements of my Dualsense for previous generations.
I can't believe controllers have gotten this expensive. Even the base DualSense costs a pretty penny. That being said, the Turtle Beach Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded is not targeting the casual user and more towards professionals and those who would buy the DualSense Edge.

Ive never much been into 3rd party controllers in the past. I played a lot in the era of a sea of junk when it came to 3rd party controllers. I understood the appeal of getting one at half the price. But they always felt, looked, and controlled half as good. So upon the inevitable break Id just spring the extra cash for an OEM.
So with that all in mind despite the price I was expecting the controller to just not “feel” right. Well that was immediately put to rest once I got this in my hand. It feels so good and premium in the hand. It has the perfect weight and balance, no rough edges, and the grips feel like they could handle long sessions with no problems.
Like my title this is my first modular controller so Im new to it. But was pleasantly surprised. So being able to tweak the parts, but also the buttons and settings makes for getting closer to the perfect controller even closer.
One thing I was concerned about was whether or not the PS5s great haptics would work on the triggers, etc. And unfortunately it does not support that. I suppose it would have to even more expensive for that, but a lot of games arent the same without it. Specifically Astro Bot. But when it comes to shooters its not that bad to not have the kickback of the triggers you get.
The battery life is claimed to be at 20 hours and I can say it gets close. Ive never ran out since I just charge at the end of the day.
One thing I love is that these have hall effect thumbsticks which will stop the dreaded drift. I myself have not had an issue with drift on my others, but its nice to know that wont happen here.
Overall I like this controller for some games and not so much for others. Shooters and fighting games will be great. But for games that rely heavily on the PS5 specific haptics as a feature might not.
