Customers are saying

Customers consistently note the excellent convection cooking and ease of use of this over-the-range microwave. Many appreciate its quiet operation, attractive design, and the helpful sensor cooking feature. However, some users mention concerns about the sturdiness of the door and find the control panel somewhat challenging to navigate. The microwave's weight and the keypad's functionality are also mentioned as areas needing improvement.

Love the look which was my favorite part. Loved the idea of sensor cooking and remote control and with Alexa. But will say the setup of the WiFi was a real pain and it isn’t very functional. I cant Do much with it since some options are greeted out and the sensor cooking burned my popcorn but it worked on potatoes.

Microwave is easy to use. Wifi seemed silly but it actually is very useful. It is tricky to get set up. Use both the manual and online documentation. Online has more information. Features are great. Cooks food evenly and its auto sensing is pretty smart. Its deep. Read how it installs before you buy it. Its vent comes out the top and not the top front. If you have deep cabinets they will block it. I chose to modify my cabinet instead because the microwave is worth it. Buttons work fine. Read instructions. They work like a touch screen. Convection works but its a new realm and so practice is to be expected.

Large OTR Microwave AND Convection Oven

This is a very large OTR unit with nice control layout across the bottom of the glass. The coking options are not displayed until you hit a button, then all the cooking options light up. Another Big consideration for me was the high volume fan. With four settings so you can get just the right amount of air flow - It will move some air on #1! Using #3 (Medium Low) works fine for collecting steam from a pot without creating too much draft. It cooks great potatoes if you follow the instructions in the owners manual. Use the "Potato" button and it will sense and cook 1 to 4 potatoes. I have used the Convection feature to cook fish sticks and tater tots. As an oven, it takes several minutes to pre-heat. The tater tots came out crispy and well cooked. The fish sticks worked ok, need to adjust the cooking time. I give it 4 stars because it took some time to get comfortable with the two controls on the far right end: Start and Cancel. Start is an arrow with "+ 30 sec." as a caption. Cancel is an X with "Control lock" as a caption. One other thing to consider is door size. Since the door is full size, I have to move out of the way when opening the door. Many microwaves have the controls on the right side beyond the door making for a shorter door.

Nice to have conventional cooking plus a microwave

The fan died on our Whirlpool over-the-range microwave. Since it was 4 years old, it was clearly out of warranty. I could probably have replaced it with a nearly identical model from Whirlpool (to use the same wall and hanging brackets) for about the same as getting it repaired. But my wife decided that having a combination conventional oven and microwave plus our normal oven would be more flexible so we donated the old one and got this model. The control layout is entirely different and is taking some getting used to. The oven portion is convection-only so you do have to use convection oven cooking directions not conventional oven directions. It has a number of features we haven't tried yet. The microwave seems a little less powerful than the old model so we're having to zap our popcorn a little longer (first world problems, eh?). However, it does seem to work well overall and the fingerprint resistant stainless steel actually seems to resister fingerprints. Will wonders never cease? Now if only the glass front could resist fingerprints!

Upgraded an older whirlpool over the stove microwave partly to get the functionality of convection and microwave all in one. Very sleek design, super quiet microwave operation. Convection function works well if a tad noisy when cooking at higher temperatures and the extra fan kicks on but cooks evenly and quickly. Highly recommend this oven!

This does normal microwave stuff just fine. The convection oven feature is very underrated- it really allows you to have all of the utility of a second oven without the expensive option to have a double range. It preheats very quickly too, which often has me preferring to use it over my range stove. There are a couple of quirks to be aware of: 1) the buttons a little hard to press/unresponsive if you don’t hit them in just the right spot. I’ve never had to even worry about this in a microwave before. 2) it’s sometimes annoying that many of the buttons are not illuminated until you press the button to do so. 3) the under counter light and light in the microwave are not led/bright white. They are very yellowish and dim compared to most new microwaves. I may try and swap out the bulbs for led based ones.

The preheat for convection takes an extremely long time. So does the sensor cooking mode. The instructions for the different cooking cycles is very vague. The “start” button is just an “arrow” emblem, which took me along time to figure out where to push “start” at. If you just use the cook with amount of time entered, everything cooks great. Love the chimes it plays when finished and the overall sleek appearance.

I really like this microwave. Very contemporary and modern design. Easy to use and loaded with many advanced features. In addition to microwave cooking, this microwave is also a convection oven. Microwave is much quieter than my previous microwave. This microwave can be controlled by Whirlpool App and Alexa, however, I’m downgrading to 4 stars because Alexa will not recognize microwave. I’ve called Whirlpool support, they can’t resolve the issue. Whirlpool referred me to Amazon. Amazon said it was something that has to be resolved by Whirlpool. I am sure they will eventually get this resolved.

Lots of functions, the convention works good, I like the streaming accessories that came with it and I actually user them. The internal mounting nuts seem like they're attached in a very flimsy manner compared to the rest of the quality details of the unit. The door seems unnecessary wide, but you'll get used to it.

    Scan to Cook Disappointing...

I have been using this microwave for about a month. It is very sleek and modern looking and is very quiet when running. It seems to cook food pretty evenly. I did not have any issues in connecting it to Whirlpool’s App, to my wifi and to my Alexa. However, to call it Smart, IMO, is a little exaggerated. Alexa can turn the microwave hood light and the fan on and off. I suppose that’s kind of convenient; I’ve just not had the need to have Alexa perform that task yet. My biggest complaint it the Scan to Cook technology. I have not found any frozen foods at my local Kroger’s or Walmart that this feature works with except the Digorno cheese pizza and a Stouffers meatloaf. I looked all over Whirlpool’s website for a list of foods that had capability to be scanned and cooked in this microwave and found no list. I called Whirlpool Smart Appliance Department and they told me there were many foods that could be scanned but that there was no list available to the public. IMO that’s a big fail on Whirlpool’s part. GE’s website has a huge list of foods that are scannable into their smart appliances; it makes absolutely no sense to me why, if you purchase a Scan to Cook appliance, a list isn’t made available to you of food items that will work. So for me, this feature that I was so excited to have is a pretty big fail. But again, the microwave/convection oven is very attractive and appears to cook very nicely. And the stainless fingerprint resistant finish is also very nice. Scan to Cook leaves something to be desired. Or maybe not-IF I JUST HAD A LIST OF FOODS THAT WOULD SCAN!

Cooks well. The directions for connecting WiFi to it though were cryptic at best. Several tutorials later, I figured it out. Scan to cook seems to not have a very big library. I've tried Tyson hot wings, TGIF poppers and Pop Secret popcorn. None of those are in their library. It's really easy to switch to convection and makes awesome cookies! The microwave doesn't seem to get the dish really hot but the food is. My old one, the bowl or plate was always hotter than the food. Also, easy to hook up to Alexa, once the WiFi is connected.

Love the microwave. We purchased this unit because of the combination convection cook features and the multi speed powerful exhaust fan and have been very pleased thus far. My only complaint is that I have not been able to connect the unit to WIFI ....I followed the instructions to the letter and keep getting an error message. (I am a very tech savvy person) Looks like a call to support is needed but they are only available 9-5pm weekdays when I am working

Runs very quiet. Very versatile. Love multi light level, multi-speed fan. People complained about fan noise, hi speed is loud yes, but slower speeds much quieter - I like having that choice. Love the convection mode too. If there was anything I’d change is that when you touch the menu so it lights up, that the numbers would also light. Yes, have to turn on lights or use flashlight to see #’s. Still - excellent unit.

    Best Microwave Alternative

Our family does not use microwaves and had been looking for an alternative for the microwave above our stove. When our stove died we ended up getting all new appliances at the same time to match. While this still has a microwave in it, it’s also a tiny oven! We wish the Whirlpool website had more instructions and help to understand using it as an oven versus a microwave because items, like tin foil for example, that you can use in the oven setting will have disastrous consequences if used in the microwave setting. We are still figuring it out, but when we’ve used it as an oven it’s been a fantastic addition to our kitchen appliances!

The sensor mode works very well. Everything the else works as good or better than we expected. The only negative might be the door...being full width, it takes more space to open it up. Our kitchen is not large but it's not small either, so once we got used to it, it's ok. Might be an annoyance in a confined kitchen.

We purchased our new microwave to replace one that had worked well for us for 25 years. Needless to say we have been impressed with all the new options available and have thoroughly enjoyed exploring them. Using convection has been rewarding as we haven’t had to heat up the large oven. The soften chocolate was amazing. No more mic for 10 seconds, check and repeat.

Got a replacement after the first was damaged in transit. Not extremely heavy but bulky. Trying to fit and align in cabinet cutout is best done with 2 people. Still working fine. Looks good.
