I've been using a Samsung 1920x1200 monitor for the past 6 years so when I decided to add a second monitor to my desk I was buying with the idea that I will also use this new monitor for just as long. This is the reason why I chose to spend extra and get a 4K monitor at a time when 4K support is pretty limited. It also has the inputs I was looking for although I wish it included dual DisplayPort connectors. Just so you know DisplayPort is the only way to get 4K content at 60Hz. With HDMI, you can do 4K at 30Hz or lesser resolutions at 60Hz. Connectivity: DisplayPort is hooked up to my Macbook Pro which is about 3 years old so the best it can do is 2560x1440 resolution. Even though the monitor is not displaying in its native 4K resolution it still looks fantastic. HDMI Port 1 is connected to my Linux desktop which can display 4K. I use this if I actually want to view content in 4K. Some of the 4K content that you can find is breathtaking when viewed on this monitor. It's much more appreciable when you are sitting 2-3 feet from a 4k monitor versus trying to watch it on a 4K TV where you really won't see the detail from the distance that most people watch their TVs. HDMI port 2 is used for gaming with my PS4 and it has quickly become one of my favorite display devices to game on. PIP: The PIP (Picture-in-Picture) is a nice feature but it's usefulness is limited. It's nice to be able to put my PS4 for example into a smaller window of my desktop but things on your computer screen can get hidden behind this inset. The side-by-side feature is much more useful if you need to use more than one ipnut at a time as long as you are ok with each view being vertical. This feature doesn't work well at all with input from my Linux machine. Sound: I love how I can route the sound through my monitor and out to my external THX speaker system. Whichever source is displayed on the monitor is output to my speaker system, whether is is the sounds of my Mac through DisplayPort or the sounds of my games through HDMI. There is a volume control on the monitor that's easilly accessible through the jog wheel if you are using headphones. I keep it at 100% and control the sound with my external speakers. Menu: The menu and configuration buttons are on the back of the monitor on the right hand side in the form of a "jog wheel" so it can be a little awkward to change inputs or any other settings but unless you are trying to configure PIP you won't be using the menu often, so it works fine. Stand and Mounting: The stand is not adjustable and there are no mounting holes to do a wall mount with this monitor. For me, this is not a problem.

This is by far the least expensive TRUE 4K display out there, however still high on the price but I decided to take the dive and have NO regrets. Everything about this monitor is stellar except for only one display-port plus the stand is wobbly and does not have VESA support. See PRO VS CON list below. This monitor is NOT for everyone! I cannot stress that enough. Only purchase this unit if you have the hardware capable to support it! You need a compatible video card that can output at 3840x2160 as well as having an appropriate video card that has DisplayPort 2.0 in order to take advantage of the higher refresh rate at 60hz. HDMI has a cap of 30hz and when you get into anything graphically intensive like gaming or movies or designing, using a 4K display with HDMI is just not going to cut it. Definitely use the cables that come with the monitor, especially for Display-Port: they are high quality with ferrite core filters on both ends. It will take some time to adjust your settings to make applications (including your OS) legible because at such a high resolution it makes everything smaller due to the default DPI settings for software set at 96. Make sure you at least set your display settings at 125% or even 150%. I love having the extra real estate for web browsing, it has all the content center on the screen and I am able to see ALMOST the entire web page in full. Graphic & Web Design is where this baby shines! I love editing phones and creating content without having to adjust my head or settings to see if colors are misplaced or misrepresented. From what I'm told, Windows 8.1 has a much more improved compatibility when it comes to 4K but I'm still one of those people who 'hate' Windows 8 so I'm content to tweaking some settings on Windows 7 :D I decided to wait until a store has this in stock and I was there the very next day after my local Best Buy store had their very first shipment in! The reason why I waited was because every place I checked, Amazon, Newegg, TigerDirect, they all had the same shipping standards, the unit would ship in the retail box without any additional packaging and I was NOT taking that risk. Also, most distributors shipped from out of country and would ship with Korean power adapters as well as the monitor being set in Korean as default out of the box. Final Thoughts: PROS: - 4K resolution - 60 Hz refresh rate (When using Display-Port) even at full resolution, unlike many alternatives - Clear, realistic colors--vibrant, but not over-exaggerated even with stock settings - No glare - Light and easy to assemble/transport - DisplayPort - Intuitive interface with cool joystick control in convenient, out-of-way position in rear corner of monitor - Makes Retina look like a toy - Black is a deep rich Black - Gaming Mode is actually incredible! It takes all the colors and amplifies them tremendously! - Viewing angle is the best I've ever seen; no need for tilt adjustment--though it offers fine-grain control over optimal viewing angle anyway CONS: - The wobbly stand, I would have gladly paid a slightly higher price for VESA mount capability - As stated above, many software lacks decent support for anything higher than 96 DPI. Be sure you know how to deal with DPI issues. - I have noticed the monitor does not 'wake up' from sleep mode and I have to power cycle it and then it comes back online, its most likely a setting issue that I have yet to figure out but I can't let the computer go to sleep or else the monitor will not come back on. I can't let the monitor itself sleep either, its weird.

I was using my friends monitor on a brand new computer build I had just done. My friend needed his monitor back and so I had to buy one. After spending $1500 on my build, I wanted to wait a bit before spending more. I started looking at monitors. I knew that I either wanted one big monitor or 2-3 smaller monitors. After looking around a bit, I saw the UD590 on sale for $499. It was a couple hundred more then a normal 1080P monitor at this size and offered future proofing. Not really thinking, I grabbed a friend and went to my local Best Buy. I didn't even really look at it, I just bought it and walked out. Then I started thinking, WOW, you just spent $500 on a monitor. I really started thinking about returning it. Let me tell you, I'm so happy I didn't. Once I got her up and running, I instantly fell in love. Everything is so vivid and crisp, so clear. I started watching 4K videos and my heart began to thump in excitement. Next came the video games. Even though I'm only running a single GTX 970, I still put everything in 4K and OMG. Older games come back to life, newer games have never looked better. My jaw was on the floor. I have heard of 4K/UltraHD but I never really thought it would be that much of a difference. I'm very happy with this monitor and I'm even happier I didn't return it but there are some annoyances that may bother people. 1. The stand sucks and kinda flimsy. I don't mind how it looks but some people will surely be put off. The stand is kinda weak and feels like it will break if you try to move the monitor around to much. 2. No VESA mounts. Not a problem for me but people will not be happy about that. 3. Poor viewing angles. If your not looking square at the monitor, then your picture sucks. The off to the side you are the blacker it gets. 4. Menu buttons are behind the monitor. Makes it very difficult to change your preferences. You do get used to it rather quickly and I don't mind so much but you may hate it. To me this monitor offers far more pros then cons. If your in the market for an affordable 4k monitor, then you have two choices (IMO) this and the Asus PB287Q. At the time, The Asus was $40 more and didn't warrant the extra money from me but if you want a VESA mount then that will be the one you need. Overall this is a helluva monitor that offers great performance for the money. The picture is fantastic and you will surely get many compliments when you show her off.

Pros: Great resolution. I am using the displayport connection with a 760 GTX video card and am getting max resolution. I haven't tried gaming, split screens, or gaming yet, so no opinion on those functions. With the large screen size I am able to increase icon and text size. With the 4K resolution the monitor is easy on the eyes, even up close. Cons: This is NOT a plug and play monitor. Before connecting you must first load the appropriate driver for the connection you want -- displayport or HDMI. You cannot load both drivers. Obviously that means another monitor must be used. If you are purchasing this with a new desktop at BB, insist that the Geek Squad do this for you as part of the purchase. Note that the quick install guide does not mention this -- or much else. A major negative for me! The stand has no height adjustment. -- capabilities that should be included in a monitor costing this much and this large. For one that has no vertical or horizontal space issues this is not much of an problem, but for one who needs to increase or decrease height, this is a major shortcoming. I actually removed the stand and propped the monitor up against vertical supports on my computer desk. As an example of bad engineering and/or instruction the remove stand instructions, straight from the user guide are: "While holding the stand neck with one hand, pound the other fisted hand down on the stand base in the direction of the arrow." There is supposedly a tilt capability but it did appear to work for me. Monitor controls are via a thumb wheel found on the rear lower right of the monitor. Bad engineering there. One needs to make more room to be able to get to and use the control. There is an app that allows one to set up the resolution and split the screen and such, but to simply power on and power off the monitor, one has to use the thumb wheel. The monitor has no VESA mount capability so it cannot be wall mounted or mounted on a universal monitor stand. Conclusions: Set up and placement functionality of this monitor is not well thought out and lacking in capabilities at best. The lack of clear instructions make set up problematic. Since wall placement is impossible, one needs a "wide open" area in which to use the monitor. Given these restraints, even with the great resolution, this monitor is priced way too high for its capabilities. I may change my mind, but I am seriously considering returning this and getting a well reviewed 1080P monitor with better overall functionality and at half the price.

Pros: - Most stuff looks great in 4K, especially if there's a lot of motion and bright colors to help you avoid noticing the relatively weak performance with dark colors (especially solid black). - Decently affordable option for a 4K monitor at this point in the 4K craze. - 2 HDMI ports and a DisplayPort. Cons: - The base isn't the most solid thing in the world, so I often notice the monitor wobbling if I'm typing too hard or if I'm touching the desk even a tiny bit. Also be aware that it doesn't swivel at all, and only tilts up and down a little. - The power button is on the back right corner, and is also used for swapping between inputs and various other controls. Unusual design choice, but you'll get used to it pretty fast. - I had to return the original one I got because of a patch of dead pixels right out of the box, and now about a month after getting the replacement, there's a dead pixel on this one too in an even more annoying location. I could forgive the first one as a shipping problem or just a random defect, but now that I've had two in a row, I've got to mention it. On the plus side though, I was extremely satisfied with how fast and easy it was for me to take the first dud one into the store and swap it out for a replacement. Easiest exchange process ever. Really appreciate that, Best Buy. Overall I'd say this is more or less an average product that you may or may not be satisfied with. Gaming in 4K is amazing and this monitor will get it done for you, but my honest advice as someone who has a ton of electronics at home would be to wait for a while before you give into the 4K temptation. 4K monitors and TVs will probably make huge leaps in the next product generation, and you'll probably wind up paying less for a better product.

Beautiful 4K monitor with some shortcomings

I bought this beauty for 4k gaming on my PS4 Pro and to connect to my Macbook Pro for editing when I have clients over. First things first, the Pros: -Colors on this monitor are crisp and vibrant. I'm always amazed by the quality of the picture even after months of ownership. -Very minimalistic monitor for those who love this aesthetic. -The 1ms response time is perfect for the avid gamer. Maybe not the hardcore professional gamer, but for most, this is a big cherry on top of the cake. After using it for five months, I; however, have discovered the shortcomings of this monitor that unfortunately disallows it from being perfect. A lot of these faults can be discovered online if one does extensive research. -While both HDMI inputs are 4K, be warned that only one of them is 60hz and the other is 30. Again, might not matter to most, but knowing before buying may help a lot of people. -This is something everyone must know: THIS IS FULLY HDCP 1.4. You have been warned if you want to stream Netflix/Amazon/Roku to this monitor. This is not HDCP 2.2 (which is the latest version for copyright 4k streaming). -If you're someone like me who almost exclusively uses this monitor for a console, there is no Audio Out input. The monitor does have a 3.5mm headphone jack, but if you plan on using external speakers, you will have to buy a converter to work around the lack of no internal speakers and Audio Out input. For people who might use this to play on say, like the Switch that only has HDMI and no Optical Audio like the PS4, plan ahead. -This is nitpicky, but the stand is a bit flimsy. Still holds up well though. Overall, I really like this monitor and I don't regret my purchase. Playing Battlefield 1 and Uncharted 4 on this monitor is absolutely amazing and spectacular. While the specs do come up short if you want to be totally up to date, the quality that's packed into this monitor still holds it above most of the competition.

The new world of Ultra High Definition has arrived! This is a really outstanding monitor. 4K is a total leap forward from 1080p. I use this monitor for PC gaming, particularly flight simulators where the extra resolution is a big plus. Appearance and design: Very sleek and made with nice materials, metal look and gloss black. Easily the best looking product out there. The only negative is that it doesn't adjust for height but in a normal desktop height its not needed. Installation: An important consideration in connecting a 4K monitor is the cables, the best one to use with this is a DisplayPort. These aren't too common so fortunately the Samsung comes with one as well as an HDMI. You'll want to use the DP as its the only one that can carry a 3840x2160/60hz signal. Picture Quality: The resolution is astonishing and this model is equipped with a good range of picture adjustments although not as much as an HDTV. Probably normal for a PC screen. The Game Mode looks particularly good for that use. This product also has a high response rate of 1ms which is essential for games. Use of a 4K display for gaming comes with the challenge of having an extremely powerful GPU. A good compromise is to run at 1440x2560 and have the display upscale the picture. This still looks incredibly sharp and lets you runs higher graphic settings. Value. A very good price for this monitor. There are WQHD screens nearly as expensive. Definitly worth the price.

I have been resisting moving from CRT based technology to flat screen technology for my computer display for years. One of my old CRT's was recently on its last legs so I decided to take the plunge. On my Mac Pro, I had a pair of 21" CRT displays, so I wanted something with a lot of screen real estate. I bought a 24" LED display with full HD (1920x1080) resolution. As soon as it was hooked up and configured, via HDMI, I was disappointed with the resolution. On this large screen, it was easy to see the individual pixels and everything looked too 'grainy.' Since I do a lot of photographic work, this was unacceptable. So I returned it and purchased this Samsung 28" UD590 4K (3840x2160) monitor, based on my satisfaction with my 4K television. In my opinion, the best feature is the very clean upscaling to 4K resolution that the monitor does. My older Mac Pro video card does not have the capability to drive to more than 1920x1080 (full HD) resolution. The upscaling from full HD to 4K in the monitor takes full advantage of the native panel resolution. The pixellation is gone and everything looks great, especially photos. I use a Belkin Mini Display Port to HDMI adaptor (reviewed elsewhere). Total satisfaction here and my angst over moving to flat screen monitors is alleviated! So don't fret if your system can not natively support 4K resolution - let this monitor do the heavy lifting... Just first ensure that your video sub-system can support wide screen (16x9) formats.
