      First digital camera purchase

I am an amateur photographer. Everything I know of photography comes from studying physics and just self interest of taking pictures for sharing. I do not intend to have photography as more than a hobby in my life. Phone cameras, for as advanced as they have become, they still do not offer proper f/stop, iso, or shutter speed controls due to obvious hardware limitations. And many times I missed a good picture moment due to digital zoom making the scene a blurry mess. So I gave in to the idea of purchasing a digital camera. Friends who are professional photographers recommended going straight for a mirrorless camera. One who made part of his career using canon SLR and DSLR cameras, the other nikon DSLRs; both moved on from DSLRs to sony mirrorless. They both convinced me of having not as steep learning curve in handling the camera. Playing around with other DSLRs and the the sony a6000 in stores, I understood what my friends meant. Auto focus speed is fast and intuitive, iso and shutter speed live preview from OLED view finder made the camera's use very intuitive even for a first timer as me. No surprises of changing settings and then getting a blurrier or darker picture than what the view finder couldn't predict. This camera is also very light when using the 16-50mm kit lens. Can be easily carried with included strap or conveniently in backpack. Build material is solid. The included 16-50mm kit lens offers great range for wide angle captures that most other cameras don't offer with 18mm. Colors are always vivid and images sharp thanks to auto focus. Even when using manual focus, the OLED view finder offers zoom to where you desire to aim to achieve accurate preview to and pin point focus adjustments. 55-210mm lens takes excellent long distance captures with solid precision. As expected, it adds weight to the camera, making it less portable. Captures come out great and sharp from long distances, allowing for good range in outdoors, and thanks to the camera's sensor great night time pictures and videos. This camera doesn't support 4k video capture. However, recording 1080p 60fps videos is easy and intuitive. Also allows other finer adjustments for capture saving, including 24fps for cinematic results. Camera supports sony's playmemory apps. They can be purchased separately. One of them allows for timelapse capture with excellent presets and customization for all kinds of creative captures. This is being a great camera for a first timer. Even semi and professional photographer friends have fun with this camera when I present it to them. Preset options, and levels of control allow for my creativity to be unbounded by my phone's camera. My skyline and sunset pictures are better than ever. More lens can be bought for even greater creative options that may lead to professional routes of photography. Only negative I have, common to my friends who jumped from DSLRs, is the battery life. It is a result of smaller body, and fact that the image sensor is continuously active due to view finder true preview, versus DSLRs' sensor being active only at shutter action. So far it lasts around 3.5 hours of video capture in 1080p 60fps, or about 400 pictures per charge. Definitely not a deal breaker as I don't use it for more than a day without charging. But I do have to charge it almost every other day. When I do go for a trip, I may buy either extra battery or a high capacity phone charger to charge it on the go. Charging can be done from USB straight in camera, though slow when connected to a computer. With wall outlet charger, it gets to 100% in about 1 hour or less. Image sharing can be done from NFC with supported NFC enabled tablets/phones, or local WIFI signal straight from camera, which allows to browse camera's pictures and videos and download straight to phone/tablet using playmemories app. Transfers of 50 pictures take less than 1 minute, no internet or computer required. Only downside to this excellent and convenient feature is that RAW pictures will be transferred as JPEG, so less options are then given in mobile version of Lightroom style editors. I am happy my friends recommended such a great camera for first purchase. And by amount of features and compatible lens sony is making, this may be my long term photography tool.

Beautiful photos with light and easy handling

I went into Best Buy shopping for a new SLR. I had never considered a mirror-less camera, and did not know anything about them. I had reservations, believing an SLR was the only way to go for clear beautiful photos, but I was tired of lugging around heavy cameras in order to get great photos. My Best Buy salesmen showed me the Sony A6000, answered my many questions, and assisted me in trying out the camera in the store. I was impressed with its ease of use, comfortable design for handling, and the amazing clarity of the photos with this camera. The price for the bundle with the camera, zoom and case was great, too. I decided to give it a go. I am very glad I did!. This camera is awesome! We vacationed in the mountains of Poland, and I was able to take beautiful photos of the gorgeous countryside, castles, and people of the quaint villages and towns. Colors were clear and bright, lighting crisp, and I didn't have to set a thing. No more finding the 'party scene' setting, or 'sunset' settings. Point and click. Beautiful! While I did not use the long lens extensively I did occasionally switch lenses to capture distant views, or detail on buildings. The lens was much lighter than other zoom lenses I had, making it easy to work with. I was able to comfortably capture clear, crisp details. I love the camera's option for multiple frame shooting- in low, mid and high speed, to capture movement so clearly. The camera takes several photos in sequence -slow or fast.. I've had a multi-frame feature with other cameras, but never as easy to use as on the A6000. The mutlipoint autofocus on this camera is amazing. Everything is perfectly clear without having to do a lot of work to get there. So easy. This camera also shoots very clear and smooth video. I will say that I wish the video camera button were in a different place- on the top or the back of the camera. Its located on the right side edge near the top, which is awkward. I took some short videos a few times before I realized I was filming. It's also a tad awkward to stop filming because of the button location. Having used an SLR for years, I didn't think I would use the screen on the back to shoot much, but found it was very easy to do, I was able to comfortably toggle back and forth using the eye viewfinder or the screen as needed. And I wear glasses, and that did not matter at all. This camera is very comfortable to use. The tilt feature on the screen in back is terrific for shooting in awkward spaces, capturing a different angle, or when one can't put the camera to one's eye. I didn't explore all its many features yet- but i just uploaded my over 3000 photos taken over our 2 week vacation, and wow! I love this camera! I'm so glad I bought the large SD card! Thanks, Best Buy!

I am new to photography, and I love this camera.I bought this as my first interchangeable lens camera. I chose the bundle/kit, which came with the 50mm and 210mm. You won't be disappointed. Small enough to carry around with the lens I have. I'm addicted and have acquired a few more lenses and some gear for it. Also necessary for those just starting out is a separate battery charger pack with two back-up batteries - worth it and it even comes with European adapter. I don't have any complaints, but don't know enough about photography to really give this any more of a detailed review for now. I've forced myself to shoot manual and read about how cameras work and this is a really fun camera to work with. I've come pretty far and enjoy the fact that I can be lazy in some situations and use the various auto settings. Overall, it is a quality camera with tons of features and flexibility. The camera grip provides a secure hold with one hand. The left mounted viewfinder makes for easy viewing without nose smudges on the LCD. Build quality is solid and tight with no squeaky plastic sounds when you grip the camera. An industry standard hot shoe tops the camera. It has the standard electrical contact for use with other brand flashes in addition to having the Sony proprietary contacts for use with Sony microphones or lights. Overall, I can't rave about the a6000 enough. It is as close to the perfect beginner camera as you can get. Affordable, loaded with features, great image quality.

I needed a camera to take great quality pictures of my service dog. This camera.. I wish I can rate it more than 5 stars.. First, there are so many different settings to choose from "night, fast moving object, so on". 2nd, I absolutely love the setting where you take a picture and the camera automatically focuses on the subject and blurs the background. 3rd. It can capture 11 pictures in 1 second on shooting mode. This camera is fantastic. 4th, when you want to send your picture to your smart phone, all you have to do is "send to smartphone" the camera will pop up a wifi name, join that wifi on your phone and boom! Those pictures are now on your phone! Simple. Easy. Quality photos. I love it! I can take a picture from extreme distance, and it still gives me quality pictures! Wish I have known about this camera sooner! I was definitely hesitant paying Over $ 500 for a camera.. But I definitely don't regret my decision!

Lens failed to work twice and camera body once

      • My Best Buy® MemberMember

Please do not buy this camera kit. The smaller lens failed to work now for the second time in less than two months. I had the small lens repaired in January, the body failed to power up and had it repaired in February. Just got the body back from repair and now the smaller lens will not work again. It was just repaired mid January. I want Best Buy to stop selling this camera. It is terrible. Even though mine is under the one year warranty, yes these failures all happened in less than a year, I have to pay shipping and insurance and be without my camera each occurrence. I prefer to return my camera for a complete refund or at least send me a new lens. Two lens failures to work with the camera in less than 6 weeks if terrible. This should not be sold anywhere and I expect Best Buy to not continue to sell products that fail. Google lens failure with this camera before you buy it and you will see a large amounts of complaints. It is a known problem and they keep selling it.

So we switched from our old Nikon DSLR camera which we have had for about 5 - 7years. We loved that camera but the shutter spazzed out and got stuck open... cant fix it. So we figured it was time to go get another one. When looking online though and going to a local camera shop, the consensus from everyone was for our needs we should probably be looking at a mirrorless camera. A lot of the issues on the old ones in terms of overall quality and nighttime shooting were resolved in the last few years, and many now perform better than the DSLR ones - at least according to the camera experts we chatted with. Anyway, so we went and checked this one out as it had some of the best overall ratings around. When we got to Best Buy, the guy in the camera department lit up when we started to look at it. He went on and on about the features and how impressive this particular one is. We were sold, literally. To put it in perspective though, we are just an average family with average sports and holidays to take pictures with. We want high quality photos, and we want action shots for the kids sports games. This camera is a complete wizard at getting us terrific photos of those things. It is crazy easy to use, has a built in flash, takes great night time shots, and gets great battery life. The best part for us though, is that it is about half the size and weight of our old Nikon. The reason that is such a big deal for us is that we are instantly more likely to use it or take it with us places because it doesn't have or need a big carrying case, and it isn't obstructive to bring around. We are very very happy with this camera and would highly recommend it.

I have been using the Sony Alpha a6000 for the past 3-4 months and I'm completely in love with this small DSLR cam. It is so handy and small and yet gives the clarity and performance of a bigger DSLR cam. The design of the cam is very nice as it fits perfectly in the hand and wouldn't feel the weight for long duration use. Only few issues I have come across are i) You would definitely need at least one spare battery for a complete day of use even for a normal user. ii) Its not the exact one if you are more into video recording. The camera gets heated after about 10mins of video recording and gets off showing the warning message of device over heated. This happened to me a couple of times which i was already aware going through the online reviews of this device before I bought this cam. You will have to wait another 2-3 minutes to reboot the device. But I am into more of clicking than taking lot of videos, so I don't much care about these issues as a beginner. iii) The snap click sound is a bit louder. These are some of the issues I have come across in these 3 months. The stills are super clear and I should admit that this is the best budget camera in the mirrorless camera segment. The camera connectivity to iOS and Android devices are seamless. You can just transfer the photos wirelessly to your mobile device in just a couple of clicks which I like the most. The electronic viewfinder is just wow, you get to see the exact picture color that is been captured. More over the weight and size of the device is the biggest advantage I see over the traditional huge DSLR cams which are very difficult to carry around. I would definitely recommend this product to others.

I love this Camera and I got the Kit with Sony Bag and Extra Lens 55-210 Zoom , I sold my D5300 Nikon, and this camera blows it away, and with the Sony Play Memories Apps you can get for it, I was able to do Time Lapses that move! Pan, Zoom etc.., and All kinds of other nifty programs you can buy, like Star Trails, Fun! and the Pictures blow my mind! The Kit Lens is Just Awesome, don't let people tell you that they just think every kit lens sucks, go on Facebook and look up the sony A6000 group, over 11,000 members and see their pictures with kit lens, just amazing, most popular Camera out there I believe.. Mirrorless! is the way to go, glad i did not invest in Nikon lenses, but you can buy and adapter and use other brand lenses with this camera!!
