This SATA to USB cable is an external drive adapter that gives you quick and easy access to a SATA drive through the USB-A port on a laptop. Upgrade the Drive on Your Laptop - This SATA solid-state (SSD) or hard drive (HDD) adapter lets you upgrade to an external 2.5" SATA SSD or HDD. The cable lets you: add drive space, perform backups, create disk images, implement data recovery, and transfer content between the drive and the laptop. The hard drive converter externally connects directly to your hard drive connector and your computer's USB port. Faster Transfer Speeds with UASP - The cable supports USB 3.0 data transfer speeds of 5Gbps. But, you can experience transfer speeds up to 70% faster than conventional USB 3.0, when connected to a computer that also supports UASP. With UASP you can utilize the full potential of a SATA III SSD or HDD. UASP is supported in Windows 8, Mac OSX (10.8 or above), and Linux. In testing, UASP performs with a 70% faster read speed and 40% faster write speed over traditional USB 3.0 at peak performance. At the same peak in testing, UASP also shows an 80% reduction in required processor resources. Connect from Anywhere - The SATA to USB cable is a portable solution that tucks away nicely in a laptop bag -- no external power is required. The cable lets you easily swap between drives with no need to install the drive inside an enclosure. It's plug-and-play and doesn't require drivers. A: Yes, you will have no problem transferring files. I used it to update my HDD storage drive to an SSD. I know the process to clone the drive is more complicated but if your just want to transfer the files using this makes your old drive no different than an external hard drive.
A: No, the USB3S2SAT3CB will work with any standard 2.5" SATA SSD / HDD and the Western Digital WD10EZEX is a 3.5" drive. We recommend taking a look at our USB312SAT3 which will support 2.5" and 3.5" SATA SSD / HDD. Atha, StarTech.com Support
Q: Does the single USB plug both power and transfer data to/from the ssd?
A: Yes, the USB3S2SAT3CB will both power the drive and allow for data transfer. Brandon, StarTech.com Support
Q: can be use to laptop hdd to clone ssd?
A: Sure, but I believe you must have a 3.0 USB port in your laptop, so that it can power the external hdd or ssd, those 3.0 USB ports are easily recognizable by their blue color. There is also a USB type C cable which would also get the job done if you have those ports.
Q: will this adapter work with a r554l laptop hard drive
A: The USB3S2SAT3CB is designed to be used with 2.5" SATA based HDD and SSD. Brandon, StarTech.com Support
Q: Is this cable the equivalent of the Hard Drive Cable from HP, part no L23187-001? Thanks, Betty
A: The USB3S2SAT3CB is an external USB to SATA drive adapter. This is not the same as the HP product, which is designed to replace an internal laptop drive connection. Brandon, StarTech.com Support
Q: will this work with a ST1000LM024 Seagate HDD SATA Drive
A: The USB3S2SAT3CB is designed to work with any 2.5" hard drive or solid state drive as long as the drive does not require more than 5V at 0.9A (USB 3.0) or 5V at 0.5A (USB 2.0). Please confirm with the hard drive manufacturer for the power requirements. Brandon, StarTech.com Support
