Synopsis

Straight Outta Compton
Entrenched in the racial tumult of Los Angeles in the mid-1980's, a group of aspiring rappers banded together to revolutionize the global consumption of hip-hop and popular culture. NWA was born out of racial frustration and the disadvantaged economics of their South Central neighborhood. F. Gary Gray directs this biopic about the rise to stardom for the act that earned the moniker of "The World's Most Dangerous Group", featuring Ice Cube's son O'Shea Jackson Jr. playing the role of his father, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, and Jason Mitchell as the late Eazy-E. ~ Daniel Gelb, Rovi

I have to start off by saying that I didn't know much about NWA before this movie. I'm not a big rap fan, so I knew a few of their songs and who most of the members were but I didn't know much about the group's backstory before watching this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was a great look into the band's beginning, their rise to success, and the aftermath. I like the fact that there weren't many well known actors in this movie as it gave some up and coming actors a chance to show off their skills. There is violence, bad language, etc., so I wouldn't let children watch this movie. There are certain segments of adults who won't enjoy this movie either. If you're a fan of rap, or you like biographical movies, I'd recommend this one to you.

I was a fan of N.W.A. and this film is a depiction of the band with rose tinted glasses. As much as it is a good film (not great) it is definitely deliberately leaving out details around some of the scenes depicted and content of their music. It's a movie and not a documentary so I understand the reasoning behind the scope of the story and it being more so for entertainment than education. Movies are for an audience to root for a protagonist and have you identify with them. Docs are more for telling a story from an objective view. It is a cool movie but it's very narrow story that concentrates more so on 3 out of 5 members and their stories than the what all the members dealt with.

Great movie! For someone who grew up during that time loving NWA , there were thing I knew about and didn't know about. The movie helped fill in the blanks for things that didn't make sense at the time. It also showed a more human side of the famous Eazy-E, and Dr. Dre. I was really impressed with O'Shea Jr. I imagine since he is the spitting image of his father, it wouldn't be difficult to portray Cube. But he had to be him in a younger age in a different time while showing the pressures he was able to overcome to make him who he is today. THAT had to make it harder and I think O'Shea did it well. Kudos to him and the entire cast. We miss Eazy:-(

I grew with this group. I didn't like their music as I was more of the Rapper's Delight style. I was a major Tupac and Ice Cube fan though. Anyway, I had no idea they went through all they did and I applaud them for what they accomplished. So why so hard to watch because it makes you feel some kind of way about the police and although I know there are good ones out there, this was just too much. The movie pulls you in immediately and it takes you on a journey through the life of these young men and shows you the struggles of inner city youth and why it maybe so hard for them to do anything positive with their life. Watch this movie and see the disadvantages they really face. Sometimes it just about being born on the other side of the other side of the tracks!

"Straight Outta Compton" (2015 release; 147 min.) brings the story of the mega-influential hip-hop group N.W.A. As the movie opens, we hear radio and TV snippets over the opening credits about "the war on drugs" and the "crack epidemic in America". After the opening credits, we are reminded that this is "Compton, CA, 1986". During the initial 20 min. or so, we get to know how N.W.A's five members (Dr. Dre, Easy E, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and MC Ren) all live in Compton and are dealing with various problems (the police being one, obviously), and how N.W.A eventually came into being. To tell you more would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

What a let down, I was really disappointed in this movie. Ice cube hyped it up like it was going to be the bomb. I was a huge NWA fan, I was at most of their concerts or my friends were there and this movie was, to put it in Ice Cube terms, BullSH$t. Nothing like what really happened. If I had a dollar for every time he said BS in this movie I could have made a better depiction. Just because he wants to retire and let his son have an acting career doesn't mean the consumer should suffer. His son is an ok actor at best, but he is not much better. This over glamorization of Ice cube was 2 hours long and it felt like 10. It was painful, but I had to watch, it was my recommendation. Easy-E was and still is the man. R.I.P. Easy-E

The movie itself is a 5 star. I gave a 4 because Best Buy promoted a free shirt with blue ray disc. The sign did not say limited quantities in stock. And the employee at my store said some cashiers were giving them away with all DVDs. I already know a lot of parents will not agree with me. But this movie is absolutely amazing. My kids are neither white or black and I wanted them to know the struggles of other races. My kids father is an officer. So I'm not just siding with one side. I can actually understand both sides. I believe all children should see this so that way they know what not to be. Weather it be a professional or a non criminal. My kids loved it and never believed how hard it was for some in the old days.

There isn't much to say beyond what has already been said. Definitely one of the best movies of 2015 and highly recommended for both the casual and die-hard fans. Most serious fans will probably already know everything in this already, but the presentation and style of the movie really make this entertaining regardless of how much the viewer knows going into it. I've watched it a few times now and even though the movie is a little longer than most, it doesn't seem to overstay its welcome and goes by rather quickly once all the characters are introduced. WARNING: Watching this movie may give you the sudden urge to listen to N.W.A.'s greatest hits album afterward. It's that good! OVERALL: 4.5 / 5
