A: No. You will only need a smartphone if you wanna use the live traffic feature.

Q: Do I have to hook up my computer for a new map when I travel from Florida to Wisconsin?
A: I have never had that problem with the tom tom. When you update the maps, it updates the whole United States maps and when I go to state to state it doesn't have any problem like you mentioned.

A: No problem getting map updates, no charge. The problem is getting it to work consistently with your cell phone for up to the minute traffic and camera updates.
A: It is not voice activated. You have to physically put in the address. The typing is a little slow.
A: It uses the most used roads. As long as you keep its maps updated I think you will be alright. I have never had a problem with it messing up on me
