Q: Can this be used with the Dish Hopper since it is 2TB and has a external ac.
A: Yes, my friend. I have a standard Hopper Unit and I am just about done transferring all my data (movies and TV's). I encourage you to read the review I just wrote this morning. This unit works fabulously. It has it's own power source (which Dish says you need) and it is 2 TB (which Dish claims in the maximum). The Dish installer that put my system in about 8 years ago claims that he has a 3 TB WD that he is using. I bought a 4 TB WD and coudn't get it to work at all. I took it back and ordered this one on-line from Best Buy. It has worked super. Only took about 5 minutes to format but will take you days to transfer your movies. My Hopper was 80% full. I've been transferring in groups since Friday. It is now Monday morning and in about 4 hours, it will all be completely transferred. Getting a Hopper 3 in about 3 weeks so I needed to get all my movies off this old unit if I wanted to keep them. If you get this unit, you will be tickled pink. It works flawlessly. It has a blue light that stays on. When you are transferring, the blue light blinks so you know it is working. The WD I originally bought had NO LIGHT. I didn't like that.
A: No monthly fee because you own the drive wherever you decide to install it. The path from your device to this hard drive is via the internet. In other words, even if you have your laptop on the same network, any data you save is routed through the internet instead of a physical or wifi connection from your computer to your router to you My Cloud. There is a way to make My Cloud an external drive but WD does not go out of their way to explain how this can be done. I think some default Win 10 security settings prevents easily setting this up so I had to go to YouTube to figure out how to set up. I changed some Win 10 settings and now I My Cloud set up as Z drive. Just to repeat, it can be treated as external hard drive but it must be connected to the internet and any data saved to it will be transferred via the internet connection from your computer or phone to the My Cloud. By the way, multiple uses can be configured on the same hard drive so each can have their own portion of the drive without the other person seeing the other persons files.
A: Yes, this hard drive can be used to store music files.
A: Hi Joan, it can also be used as a drive you store home videos or images on to stream to your smart tv or digital pro tire frames that have a network feature. Also you could use it as onsite backup in the event the internet connection goes down you would still have access to your files.
A: Yes I back up mine and. I have Ios
Q: If I am traveling, do I need to be logged in to the internet to access my files?
A: Hi, Please be informed that the WD My Cloud Home always needs to be connected to the internet to access files. Need Help? Please see our "'Contact Us" page for information.
A: I have never tried this, but from reading through the manual I would say that you can. But you'll have to use the My Home App to do it, not File Explorer.
Q: Is this compatable with both PC/windows and OS/Apple? So I should be able to run both on this unit?
A: Hi BoyWonder, The My Cloud Home ships with a Gigabit Ethernet Interface and plugs directly into your network router. The My Cloud Home is compatible with the WD Discovery software for both Windows and macOS, your user account - or better spoken - your storage capacity on the My Cloud Home - will be mapped automatically into your file explorer or Finder as an additional drive letter.
