Q: can i record cable t v with out getting any thing from cable company

A: you can buy a full TiVo, either Edge, Bolt, Romio, but you still have to "rent" the cablecard from the cable company, usually for $2-$5 per month. cable cards are getting harder and harder to find. there's not much profit for the cable company, so they are discouraged financially from supporting this, even though required by the FCC. note the TiVo mini products are NOT full dvrs, they allow you to extend the use of your dvr to other rooms to service additional TVs.

A: Hi, thank you for answering! I forgot I'd written this question and went ahead and bought it. It works great via wifi at my house. The only potential issue is that sometimes it is slow to connect to the TiVo in the other room...but never more than a few seconds. I highly recommend it! Thank you again, Adam

Add TiVo mini to TVs other than tv that TiVo control unit Configure route for MOCA I have 4 TVs with 4 MOCA converters 1 controllers, 3 minis (1 4K mini) 4 GB Switches This configuration allows me to connect devices to the switch that now becomes hardwired (RJ 45) instead of using wireless. A: The general answer to all of your questions is no. The TiVo Mini is not a standalone product - it must be used in conjunction with a full TiVo system that has an active Tivo subscription. The main purpose of the Tivo Mini is to allow you to watch the shows that you recorded on the full Tivo in other rooms without having to have an additional dedicated Tivo system. It essentially streams the content from the primary Tivo to the Tivo mini for viewing on another TV, and has some additional streaming services built in like Netflix and Amazon Prime - but again the Tivo Mini provides NO functionality without a primary Tivo system to operate from. It is a great device within the Tivo ecosystem - but if you are looking to create or stream your own IPTV streams this device will not work for you.

Good but some Apps not Avail. & Pricey
Overall, works as well as the Roamio unit it communicates with. I had issues getting it to communicate with the Roamio at first but that was because the Roamio was purchased almost five years ago and uses different firmware. A simple call to TiVo support solved the problem. They instructed me on how to down-grade the firmware on the new unit so it would work with my Roamio. I took a star off the rating because Disney and Hallmark are not available Apps. I’m not sure if this is a function of the Roamio not having the ability or the Mini Lux but disappointed nonetheless. Roamio should have the ability to upgrade if that’s the case. The remote is as good as the one that came with the Roamio so I was very pleased by that. Overall a good unit. But pricey for just and extension unit.

The Best Mini, also the only mini still available.
It's ok if you're already stuck in the TiVo ecosystem. Besides netflix, which works well, apps are primitive, stuck on versions that are 5-10 years old. TiVo recently lost support for the HBO app. Plex still mostly works, but is technically unsupported and limited to only 720p. With the current consumer-hostile FCC leadership, mandatory cable card support has been nix'd, so cable providers could now kill Tivos at any time just by dropping cablecard support.

Tivo 4K Mini LUX
I love being able to record and watch recordings from my Mini. Some times it says it is not connected to my main Tivo and sometimes it says it is not connected to the internet or my internet is not working, and it is working on my main Tivo. The next time I turn on my tv with the mini hooked to it, it might be working. I am glad I have the main unit hooked up where I watch tv the most. I get several free movies on it with commercials.
