4 stars as it contained a giant monster and....

But whatever the guy makes super watchable movies if not forgettable ones. I did enjoy this one though and toss it in every now and again. Heck I bought it again on Bluray just to see it on the projector. Fun easy popcorn movie to just space out with and enjoy the chaos. Oh yeah and Its got Lizzy Caplan.

Intriguing & Surprising
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When this film first came out, they tried to closely guard the big reveal secret of the movie & so I'll not disclose it here. Basically it's a story of a horrible disaster that occurs as a young man attends a surprise going away party to celebrate landing a new dream job in another country. His best friends have a camcorder to catch it all but when the unimaginable happens, the rest of the film is about trying to survive. The ENTIRE film is shot POV style from this single camera & we are treated to images of a bittersweet love story, goofy friends plotting a party, the horror that is designated as Cloverfield, & the resultant scramble to live & love. The special effects are excellent, the idea is wonderful (& a much better than The Blair Witch Project), & at times sadly poignant as you realize the happiest moments are being recorded over to "document" this incredible event. If I have ANY complaint it's the jerkiness of the hand-held camera throughout, but you can become used to it soon enough & it DOES add to the realistic depiction of the event. I love showing this film to friends who've never seen it & tell them nothing in advance (I won't even let them see the liner notes on the back of the case). They're surprised (& pleased) every time. An old-fashioned idea done well for the 21st century audience.

Cloverfield brings back the fear
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Many contemporary kaiju movies focused too heavily on the monsters rather than the protagonists or the human characters. In doing so, they lost the fear and terror that such gigantic and destructive beings would naturally evoke. While the secondary plotline is forgettable and the human characters are rather flat, Cloverfield successfully refocuses itself on the humans and allows the viewer to experience the terror of a giant monster attack from the perspective of the individual on the ground. Warning- those with a tendency towards motion sickness might want to use caution. The camera work is deliberately jarring.

Action-Packed
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have really enjoyed watching streaming versions of this film, so I was glad to be able to get a 4K copy. Good quality video and sound. A few dark scenes are a little heavy on film grain, but most of the scenes looked good. While I've enjoyed watching this multiple times, I only watched the sequel once, and didn't like it, so I declined to buy the combo / 2-movie package.

Alien Gojira
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I watched this movie when it came out and was probably not paying too much attention...you know, my ADHD acts up every...oh look, a nickel! Anywhozles, my girlfriend kept asking about the Cloverfield 2 movie, and she had not yet seen the first one! She lived under a rock for many years before she met the awesome, old me. We watched this together and it was pretty darn swell when you pay attention, a lot scarier than I thought it was. My girlfriend was Scoobie-Doing it the whole movie, (biting her nails typewriter style). It's a great movie to have in your collection. One of the handheld video-camera style movies that actually works! Go buy it..I paid like 6 bucks...not too shabby!
