Refurb? Not even bench tested!

In general, I have good luck with refurbs, but I have ordered and returned 2 of these things. The first one, there was picture for a fraction of a second, then the screen went blank. Thinking it was a fluke, I returned it and ordered a replacement. Same thing. EXCEPT...this one had a bluray disk still in it from the previous owner!!! That tells me that Best Buy/Insignia didn't refurbish this thing...they didn't even look at it before plunking it into a new box and shipping it out to me! So, to whomever is missing a Robin Hood disk, THANKS! It is now my consolation prize.
If you are willing to keep ordering different ones until you find a working one, it may be worth it for the price, but otherwise buyer beware.

Audio quit working after 3 days.

Initially everything went fine. Bought it with anticipation of buying HDTV in the next couple of weeks, and price was right (deal of day at $59.99). Set-up was easy and connected to wireless and Netflix without trouble. On an old TV, it is very hard to read the on screen instructions and wording. After three days, the audio quit, just giving white noise. Checked all connections, which were OK. I unplugged the unit, and replugged in back in. It then worked again fine, but when I turned it off and back on, again no audio. It goes back to store the first of the week. My married daughter also purchased one on the "deal of the day", and it is running fine, so I got the lemon. I tried to go cheap, and lost. First time I've had a refurbished product break right away.

For the price - decent Blu-Ray with features

I bought two of these on the Best Buy Deal of the Day. One works great and the other I seem to have an issue with Pandora (music is choppy), but I have not spent much time troubleshooting. I highly recommend NOT upgrading the firmware when you setup the unit. I did this on one and it completely messed up everything. Had to go the Insignia Support page, download the previous firmware to a USB drive and plug into unit to re-install previous firmware.
As far as the remote, who cares, it is a remote and it works.
If you want a nice Blu-Ray for a Home Theater, spend a few extra bucks and go with a brand name. My other unit is a LG BD570 which has been flawless since I have owned it.
For the money and features (built-in WiFi and applications) this is a good entry level Blu-Ray player. Good luck finding another brand name model for this price. Hope this helps.

A basic BD player but not very good even then

My experience with refurbished items has been very good. I purchase PC's for my office and have purchased several refurbished ones that we are very pleased with. The Insignia brand is good for a "house brand" and I figured BB would know how to refurbish since in-store service is highly touted. Unfortunately, this unit met none of my expectations. When playing BD about two-thirds of the way through the movie the unit would just stop and would not allow me to search for the chapter to restart. It would only replay from the beginning. Imagine how frustrating that is after watching for 2 hours and missing the ending! After many failed attempts to connect by wifi, including going into my router for special settings, I hard-wired the unit and downloaded the firmware update. This finally helped with the BD function but did nothing for the wireless capability. I watch Netflix and listen to Pandora now that it's hardwired but still hold my breath when watching disks. This unit has given me more than $100 worth of frustration; I wish I had spent the $150 for a new name-brand model so I could be writing a more positive review.

Acceptable player for my needs.

After owning for nine months, this player is acceptable for playing old DVD movies and the 5 blu-ray movies I own. I primarily use it to access Netflix, Cinema Now, and Pandora programming which cam with it and it works well. Like most complaints, the setup was challenging. The player immediately recognized my router but did not synchronize when I put in my WPA encryption code. As I note above I had to perform a hard reset of my router and that worked. The Insigna Help desk to me this player only works with WEP encryption but I have not found that to be the case. The firmware updates I have made downloaded with no problems. Did not have to reset my router again.
This is my first and only blu-ray player so I can't compare it to other brands. Since I have Apple TV I will not be buying another blu-ray or media player again. Only reason I would not recommend to a friend is because I would suggest buying Apple TV or the likes. Just a note, I am somewhat Tech savvy and like figuring out problems so If you are not a patient person this may not be the player for you.

Didn't quite make it a year

For the price, not too bad for a year's worth of service I guess. After about 6 month the panel stopped working and all commands had to go through the remote. After 11 months, Blu-Ray discs would not work at all. The 12-month Insignia warranty does not apply on refurbs. Replaced it with a well-reviewed Sony this time

OK as a secondary player

Bought the refurb to serve as a back-up player in the man cave for when I was watching sports or son playing XBox on the main TV so could watch Netflix on the secondary TV. The wireless couldn't connect to the router, perhaps because of the basement location, and even the wired connection struggled using a Netgear box. I finally moved it upstairs closer to the router and moved a Panasonic player to the cave, which connected easily using the Netgear box.Upstairs the wireless connects, although the bulit-in dongle flashes somewhat annoyingly in back while in operation. Another annoying distraction is the streaming of the site across the player display while in operation. Picture-wise, streaming content and discs are fine. A cheap back-up, but spend a little more for a prime time player.

A:AnswerThe Netflix app on this player will allow you to search and select programs and movies without having to use your computer to load your instant queue first.
A:AnswerIf your TV has component video jacks or standard video/audio jacks (yellow for video, red and white for audio) it will work. You won't get the same quality as you would with an HDMI connection, but it will still play Blu-ray discs and streaming video.
