Humorous, charming, and simple
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nintendo Switch version of this game does not lose much in terms of picture quality and performance compared to its new Xbox One and PS4 counterparts. The gameplay is very simple, you may or may not enjoy this. Where this game stood out to me was its surprising 2 player mode. I did not expect an open world game, even though it is a Lego game, to have two player support where each player can roam around independently from each other in split-screen. However, there are significant frame rate issues when going to this two player mode in Lego City itself. Frames go down to what it seems like 15 per second. When you're playing with someone else, it's a great new experience, so I forgave this technical hiccup. Where I won't forgive this game, however, are its ridiculously long load times for a cartridge based game. Maybe I'm spoiled with a history of polished first party Nintendo games that try their best to make sure loading times are something you shouldn't have to bat an eyelash at. But waiting close to a minute for game startup, then around 30 seconds for going from the open Lego City to a more enclosed space or level (and vice versa) is a bit disappointing. Especially considering the amount of time Warner Bros. had to port this game to the new generation of consoles from Wii U. This games main character, Chase McCain, is a great one. The cutscenes and dialogue are humorous and charming, and are very similar in comedic style to the Lego movies (The Lego Movie, Lego Batman). Which I really enjoyed. Chase made me want to return to this world and see what'd he say next on his career redemption mission of stopping the bad guy "Rex Fury". The game is great for kids 10 and up, (and arguably made for kids in that age area). But an adult can have fun with it as well thanks to its silly story and fun characters. The two player mode is a fun way to play, even if it is slowed down due to technical issues. Have fun! I'd reccomend you add it to your growing Nintendo switch library, the portability of the console itself really adds to the overall experience of the game. Note: this review was made with an online update (around 256 megabytes I believe) at the launch of the game. There may be additional updates later on that improve the technical issues I mentioned above.

Like GTA for kids
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Lego City Undercover for Switch is a port from the original Wii U game. The Wii U game was notorious for extremely long loading times and big frame rate issues. Luckily, this version has somewhat solved both. The load times have gone down to a much more reasonable 20-30 seconds rather than what it as before at up to a minute. There are still frame rate issues, but only in handheld mode. And these issues are nothing that makes the game unplayable, it’s simply just a bit annoying for people who are sticklers for frame rates. In docked mode, the game runs at 1080p. The textures and anti-aliasing are much tighter in the PS4 and Xbox One versions, but that doesn’t mean that the Switch version doesn’t look great in its own right. As for the gameplay, it’s fantastic. Take all of the great puzzle, set pieces from other Lego games and combine it with a GTA style open world but enjoyable for all ages.

Pretty fun open world game
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'll preface this by saying I'm not a big Lego game fan. What I've played so far has been fun and humorous. In single player I've not really noticed frame rate issues. The game looks good, not great but good. There is the option for 2 player local coop but I've not dabbled with it. It does require 2 sets of joycons or a joycon and pro controller combination. The game seems to have a decent amount of length to it. There's a ton of collections to find if collecting is your thing. My largest complaint is the load times. You have a decent load to get into the menu where you can load your game. So whenever you first play there's 2 significant loads that need to happen. Outside of that you'll load whenever you enter certain buildings. With the police station being the most frequent one for me. Overall I enjoy the game. If I had played the Wii u version i would pass on this but as a new experience it's not a bad game to pick up.

Great on Switch, even if you played it before
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this title originally on the Wii U when it released and it is hands down my favorite LEGO game to date. I love the open world, the characters, the story, and the play on all things TV show cop series. That said the game is not without it's faults, namely the long load times that make a return. But load times are slightly better and feature text dialog with commentary or gameplay hints. With this release being multiplatform and owning a Xbox One S and PS4 Pro, I decided to rebuy for the Switch. Digital Foundry did a comparison and found that the Switch version runs on par with other consoles at 1080p 30fps. The PS4 runs some segments of levels at up to 60fps but not consistently. The gameplay on Switch is great and two player mode is fun, even on the go. The enhanced edition looks beautiful featuring time of day lighting and enhanced textures, with the Switch having slightly lower shadow texture and reflection quality. There are even codes available to unlock the police cruiser and getaway car from the actual LEGO toys that were available in the first game. As far as new content there isn't really much to speak of, but the gameplay has been refined and plays great. Co-op mode is a big and welcome addition.
