The wait for 2nd gen has paid off!

I was always very interested in the original Nest Protect. I always loved the idea, but didn't feel the cost was justified given the negative reviews and early issues. Although they have been able to gradually improve the Nest Protect through software updates, I figured if I was patient enough, I could wait until they released a whole new hardware refresh. I'm glad I waited! Compared to the Nest Protect 1st gen, this one has an improved smoke chamber (fewer false alarms), smaller physical footprint, App Silence feature (silence alarm through app via Bluetooth), and other hardware improvements that extend the stated lifespan to ten years (up from seven)! All very good improvements. But does it work? Well, my house hasn't done the ultimate test of becoming engulfed in flames yet, but I did do some basic false alarm testing. Steam from a nearby bathroom, and light smoke from a candle, both failed to trip the alarm. So it seems their claims of fewer false alarms are true thus far. *Setup* Getting this set up was very easy. You can really tell they put a lot of work into the presentation and setup. The box is easy to open, and very welcoming with its simplistic and well-designed instructions. Everything in the manual is accompanied by very good pictures to help you along the way. Basically, the steps are: 1) Download app (Android and iOS compatible) and create a free account 2) Open Nest Protect box and remove hardware 3) With app ready to pair device, pull plastic tab from Nest Protect unit to power it on 4) Unit goes through some brief testing where you will be left with absolutely no doubt the alarm works (LOUD!) 5) Unit will pair with your phone so you can enter in wifi network info, after which it will connect to wifi 6) Remove old smoke detector and mounting plate 7) Disconnect old smoke detector wires and reconnect new wires included with Nest Protect 8) Screw in Newst Protect mounting plate and snap in other end of new wires to unit 9) Twist in unit to new mounting plate 10) Finish with another test and make final configuration changes via app. Done! This was the first time I had ever replaced a smoke detector, and I found it very easy. *Mobile App* The app is very well-designed and works well on both my phone and tablet. It also integrates with a ton of other home automation gadgets, which is really cool (Nest Thermostat obviously, Philips Hue bulbs, Skydrop sprinkler controller, and many others). Here's some of the things you can do from the app: - Change mode between Home and Away (not really relevant to CO detector, but good for other devices) - Iniitiate Nest Protect sound test, checkup - Silence alarm - Change Protect location (family room, bedroom, etc, for accurate communication) - Adjust Nest Sense: - - Toggle Pathlight to light your way when you are under Protect at night - - Nightly Promise (Unit self-tests and gives green "OK" light each night) - - Steam Check (reduce false alarms on steam, good for units near bathrooms) - - Heads Up (less loud & annoying pre-alarm warning when rising CO levels detected) - Adjust unit LED brightness (low, medium, high) - Change language (English, English (UK), Spanish, French, French (CA), Netherlands) - View unit status (model, serial, software version, battery status, replace date, last update time, wifi MAC/IP addresses) - Add/remove devices to your account - What To Do (advice on preparing for CO/fire alerts) - Device History (logs on alarms and updates) So overall, the Nest Protect is an expertly-designed device and I love it so far. It has everything I could expect from a smoke/CO detector. Although it would be awesome if it could double as a wireless access point or security camera! I will definitely update this as I get more time with my Nest Protect 2nd gen units, especially if I get false positives, or actual positives. But so far I am loving my Nest Protect.

I was on the fence buying these. IoT is a great idea though I am always worried about the security of IoT. I finally caved and bought these. They are great. Pathlight is cool. Remote testing and shutoff is awesome especially when someone burns toast. Consumer reviews say the carbon monoxide detection and smoke detection is as good as a traditional detector so I feel just as safe. My only complaint is that it does not use a hard wire to trip all alarms, but relies on wifi. What if my router melted first?

    Beware the expiration date!

I really like the product itself. However, it is still relatively pricey for average folks especially if you have to install many in the houses (and you can't mix with other brand if you want them to be able to communicate with each other which is an important feature to tell everyone in the house in case of emergency). After installing the first one to test it out a few months ago, we purchased two more online from Best Buy. After opening both boxes to install them today, to my disappointment, these two units seem to be made in 2015, so I already lost between 1.5-2 years of its approximated 10 year life. I felt cheated somehow and it seems there is no way to tell from the outside box when these units were made.

I have to admit I was so excited and loved my nest protect especially because of my furbabies at home alone all day. However, one Sunday I burned some toast and the smoke alarm went off. I did not receive a notification on my phone and even now when I check the app it says everything was fine on that day. I can test the alarm with my phone so I know it is connected correctly. I have tried unsuccessfully to reach the company for a week now. I emailed them and they emailed me that they would contact me but they have not. They also gave me a phone number to call with that email but I was on hold thirty minutes before I hung up.

I have seven Nest Protect Smoke/Carbon Monoxide units. Five of them are wired and two are battery operated. I also have the Nest Thermostat. Prior to purchasing them for my three level home, I had five wired/interconnected smoke detectors. When one would detect smoke at its location all the units would sound the alarm. I had no idea which unit was detecting the smoke and had to travel to each one on every level of the home to find the problem and reset the alarm. Now with the Nest Protect units if one of the units detects smoke you'll first hear a voice from each unit say for example "Heads-up, there's smoke in the Kitchen. The alarm my sound.", I'm able to go directly to the unit/area to see what the problem is and correct the issue. Additionally my SmartPhone receives a notification that smoke was detected in the kitchen. This has proved to be a terrific feature. These units come with a built in night light that come on when you approach them. When there's a fire, inhaling smoke can be just as dangerous as the fire itself. If you have a fan in your heating and cooling system and Nest Protect detects high levels of smoke, the Nest Thermostat can shut off fan-based systems to prevent smoke from circulating throughout your home. They also detect motion and can be used to determine if anyone is home. Nest Protect enhances the Auto-Away feature of a Nest Thermostat by improving Nest's knowledge of when you're home or away. In some homes, the thermostat may be installed in an area that makes it difficult to detect if you're away, such as an alcove or low-traffic hallway. Or, if you're working from your home office but your thermostat is in the living room, it may think you're gone for the day. If you have a wired Nest Protect, it will use its occupancy sensor to detect your presence and tell your thermostat so it won't turn down heating or cooling. Battery powered Nest Protects also help improve Auto-Away, but they'll update occupancy sensor readings less frequently than wired Nest Protects to conserve their battery charge. This is a great product, but it is expensive and that is my only negative comment.

BEWARE of purchasing from third party retailer!

BEWARE of purchasing from third party retailer! The Nest Protect smoke alarm has a limited life span. These units can sit on a shelf for OVER a year diminishing the time the units will operate. They COMPLETELY stop working after the expiration date printed on back of physical alarm! There is no date printed on the box to indicate prior to purchasing. Nest will NOT replace and is extremely unhelpful. I recently purchased two units that were both OVER a year old, could not exchange them due to retailer out of stock and Nest refused to replace them. My Nest Protect will not work as long as expected or advertised. Just beware of buying from third party retailer!!!

Easily installed in under 10minutes. This is the wired version so you should know a little bit about doing electrical work. It sends you an alert to your smartphone when trouble is detected. It can tell between slow and fast burning fires. It can also detect carbon monoxide. I like the fact it gives you a heads up before it sounds the alarm. Helpful when you mean to burn what your cooking, haha, or bbq'ing. I really like the subtle nightlight it shines when I pass it in the hallway.

These are great detectors. They're easy to set up, they connect well, and the app features are pretty good. Smoke detectors aren't really something to get too excited about, though this one comes close, and is FAR less irritating than any other smoke detector I've dealt with before. I don't have one of their thermostats yet, but given the interconnect (these both help make the thermostat more efficient, and the CO detection will tell the thermostat to turn off the furnace), I'll probably pick one of those up sometime soon.
