• A:Answer Yes, it is compatible, as they are both EF mounts. The only thing to remember is that the SL3 is a crop sensor camera, so the 50mm will be more like an 80mm lens. But I use it on my crop sensor (I have an SL1) and I love it.

• A:Answer Yes. I use this lens on both my Canon Rebel XTi/400D and 70D, both of which have cropped sensors. While I can't speak specifically to the 40D, it is my understanding it also has a cropped sensor. As a result, I would think this lens would also work on the 40D.
