Yes absolutely. One of the first things I did with mine was get rid of the included Norton trial and just use Windows Defender. I use the same thing on my Windows 7 desktop but there it's called Microsoft Security Essentials. It can't hurt to use another company's free scan occasionally to make sure Defender isn't missing anything, but unless you visit questionable sites you're gonna be pretty well protected by it. It runs without taking up a lot of resources and updates through regular Windows Update, very simple. In my case, once I uninstalled Norton it just automatically had Defender with no further action required.
