Surround sound only works with the usb

I have used just the headphones to make calls on my phone and I'm sure the 7.1 audio is generated by the usb dongle sound card that comes with the headphones.

No, 7.1 is only with the USB dongle.

7.1 surround only works with the USB dongle. This is because the the USB dongle has a sound card in it.
