In my opinion, Jeff Bridges can do no wrong. This movie is no exception. It has a little of a Tarintino feel to it but has a style all it's own. Definitely a good watch.

Not what I expected from Hemsworth. Still, not a bad movie.

I loved almost everything about the first hour or so of this. The style of the camera work, the inherent tension in the writing, the character choices, and the editing that fluidly compacts every perspective writer/director Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) introduces into a compelling mystery, but also visually conveys the themes the story is chasing. Bad Times at the El Royale is all about duality and perspective and the different ways in which one individual might perceive another based on the perception of their reality. While this may sound rather basic in terms of ideas what makes Goddard's approach work all the better is that he doesn't just layer in misdirects as cheap tricks, but truths so as to give the audience genuine pause to who can be trusted. It is in the second hour and extended climactic confrontation that the tension begins to fizzle and it becomes clear certain story strands will not be explored further much less wrapped-up. That said, what does occur is still very much an entertaining time at the El Royale with character confrontations that refuse to fully diffuse the situation and therefore the tension at hand. It is in this extended climax that Chris Hemsworth's character, Billy Lee, shows up and takes the film in a direction that doesn't tend to layer in everyone else as much as the first half. Whether Billy distracts due to the fact Hemsworth is dancing around with his shirt off I don't know, but despite being satisfied with the frankness of the conclusion there is a desire Goddard might have continued in the more complex vein of his set-up rather than allowing a single character to take things off the rails.

Ya gotta love Dakota Johnson's departure from "Fifty Shades of Grey (1, 2, &3)!" Seductive in those Fifty Shades films, here in "Bad Times at the El Royale, (2018), she (Dakota Johnson) turns in a stellar performance alongside the masterful ones by "The Dude," Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo! The other 4 star-studded cast members lend great support in the telling of this unusual mystery thriller tale as the movie unwinds the story through expert visual storytelling! I love good mysteries from the old-fashioned classics of Alfred Hitchcock, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, The Orient Express, etc., etc. So now I have a less-intellectualized, heavily-visualized tale told in intense, 21st Century impression-generating indentations in the brain/mind's eye by means of "quasi-Suspira-like" images moving from screen to screen, and scene to scene. I have watched seven (7X) already this pleasurable DVD for the images and the way it tells this story! Periodically, I love to immerse myself into the amazing LIMITED bandwidth of colors this film, Bad Times at the El Royale," displays on the small screen of my TV. AND I get yet again amazed at the artistry of acting ALL these fine actors tell in the revelations of their coming together by Fate and Destiny of this cool and unique and unusual mystery! It's also quite fascinating for me to watch it in DVD added-value of Spanish subtitles!

I loved this movie. First off, this entire hotel is built on a set. Other than a few exterior shots of facades on real buildings, it was all build for this set. And its gorgeous. So many wonderful details to be discovered on multiple views. I want these set designers to be given the job of decoration a real hotel. The lighting, the cinematography, the writing and direction are all top notch. The cast is wonderful. Jeff Bridges is as good as hes ever been. I wasn't familiar with Cynthia Erivo, but I doubt Ill forget her after this performance. There are a few scenes where she is singing, beautifully, while other important plot developments are unfolding. The rest of the cast all give solid performances. I don't really want to talk about the plot at all as I think the first viewing is best when you have no idea whats going on lol. Ill just say its 7 interesting, borderline bizarre characters hanging out at a 1960s hotel and no one is really what they first appear to be. It reminded a bit like a Tarantino film but more...polished maybe. Oh and the music! Pretty much everything about this movie is excellent :)

This film relies upon the different views of the El Royale guests and how they interact. Everything is strange and tension filled at first, but as the movie progresses you learn more and more about the group at the El Royale and why they are there. The movie is entertaining with some really weird moments that can catch you off guard. Surprises abound and you will want to watch til the end, to understand what happened at the beginning. A real dark comedy with some great acting and story line.

BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE is something out of an old film noir thriller that twists and turns throughout the movie, which is set at an old establishment right on the California - Nevada State line (which you can see runs right down the middle of the lobby leading up to the front reservation desk). If you're up to a whodunit, this film might just be for you.

Circa 1969, several strangers, most with a secret to bury, meet by chance at Lake Tahoe's El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one night, everyone will show their true colors - before everything goes terribly bad. This movie is most certainly not for everyone. The way the story unfolds and how information is withheld and-or presented is quite complex. Although this may make it a bit too convoluted for some, it makes it an absolute treat for anyone willing to dig beneath the surface and get analytical. It will keep you guessing. Don't miss it.

This movie was entertaining. It was not promoted much upon release and form the previews it was hard to gauge the theme of the movie. I found it in the bargain bin and decided to buy it. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was suspenseful, cerebral, and witty. I dealt it harkens back to older ensemble films where everyone is sharing screen time. Underrated gem of a movie and great watch when your in the mood for something different.

Offbeat, quirky, totally unexpected. All these things describe "Bad Times...". This was also my first exposure to Cynthia Erivo and I must say she is riveting. She has since popped up in several things and I kept asking myself "where have I seen her before". Then it hit me "Bad Times at the El Royale" She is almost unrecognizable in "Harriet" and that HBO Show that just concluded. Watch this.

Very interesting characters to say the least. Cinematography is wonderful as well as the soundtrack. Great blue ray copy and excellent sound. Some gruesome parts, but nothing to disturbing. Actual all actors did a fabulous job. I would recommend to my friends. A great escape for a few hours. Invest some time and witness a very different movie experience. Go back in time and enjoy.

After "Avengers: Infinity War," I would say that "Bad Times at the El Royale" was my favorite film of 2018. Why? It has great actors and great writing--as well as a few catchy songs sung by one of the cast. A group of strangers are brought together by chance at a once-famous hotel on the California-Nevada border. And that ends up in multiple kinds of mayhem. At the El Royale, no one is what or who they seem to be.

I absolutely loved this film! Great atmosphere, fun performances, very top notch production and witty writing that was very reminiscent of Tarantino’s work. It’s a cross between The Hateful Eight with the aesthetic of Pulp Fiction and a bit of The Cabin in the Woods (also from the same writer and director!) thrown in the mix. An overlooked gem that should be seen!

The El Royale is run-down hotel that sits on the border between California and Nevada. It soon becomes a seedy battleground when seven strangers -- a cleric, a soul singer, a traveling salesman, two sisters, the manager and the mysterious Billy Lee -- converge on a fateful night for one last shot at redemption before everything goes wrong.

Period correct and keeps you guessing through out All the actors pull their weight...and then some, We're going to watch this one several times I'm sure.

This is a Tarantino-esque dive into an enigma of conundrum. It has a great story, great visuals, set design, music, the works. An all-star studded cast of characters with depth, mystery, and ulterior motives. Need I say more? You should check in and find out for yourself. Enjoy your stay at the El Royale.

In a sea of sequels, prequels, and comic book films, it's nice to see something new and fresh. The ensemble cast does a great job at fleshing out a deeply rich story whilst never leaving the setting of the El Royale Hotel, a character unto itself. P.S.: If you liked this film, go see Knives Out!!!
