A bit too weird for me! Although, I do like Portman and Cassel.

When I first saw Black Swan in theaters twelve years ago, I was struck by the darker undertones throughout the film -- it's a great psychological thriller and I highly recommend it. As usual however, my review will focus more on the Blu-ray release (transfer, special features, etc) than the actual film itself. First off, my immediate reaction after watching the Blu-ray was that it was not as clean or as high-def an experience as I had remembered from the theater. Granted, my memory of the theatrical release 12 years ago is unquestionably somewhat faded, and with the advent of 4K TVs perhaps my expectations are higher now as well. However, after thinking about it more, I believe the graininess/grittiness of the video is actually intentional, especially given the psychological nature of this movie and the fact that the overall color scheme leans towards the dark and muted side (again, for atmospheric effect). With that in mind, I find that the graininess of the visuals actually heighten the sense of foreboding the way an old black-and-white horror film might seem creepier than a modern, full-color crisp 4K remaster. So while I initially was disappointed in the visual quality, I am now quite impressed by the directorial vision. While I may have been initially hesitant about the video quality, the audio was spot on from the very beginning. This disc has a 5.1 DTS-HD Master track which (if you have the equipment for it) is both amazing and downright terrifying - the subtlety with which the ambient sounds are reproduced all around you is flat out chill-inducing. As was expected from a movie about ballet, the scoring and music are exceptional... but the clarity of the dialog really blew me away. The importance of hearing every whisper is especially noted considering the relationship the protagonist (Nina, Natalie Portman) has with her main "frenemy" (Lily, Mila Kinus) and the psychological journey she goes through during this film. If there is one area where this blu-ray version of the movie falters somewhat, I'd have to say it is in the Special Features department. While I had lower expectations since this isn't the "special edition" version (a 2-disc version does exist) I have to say I kind of expected more than just a "making of" featurette and a digital copy of the movie, especially considering how well received the movie was when it came out. All in all, the atmospheric visuals and incredible sound are faithful representations of the theatrical release, while the extra features are somewhat lacking. Still, I bought this disc to mainly enjoy the movie itself, not the features, and in that regards I can say I wholeheartedly DID enjoy it. I highly recommend the film, though personally I do wish I had sprung for the 2-disc special edition instead.

I found this to be a well done exploitation of mental illness without a clinical feel. It had that arty foreign film feel I enjoy once in a while. The director did a good job as did the actors. Beautiful costumes, cinematography, and good special effects topped it off. I had never seen this movie prior to purchase and didn't have high expectations. I purchased it because I love Tchaikovsky and ballet. i used to dance around the house to Swan Lake as a child and continue listening to it often as an adult. The movie took me by surprise and I enjoyed that. The older I become, the less surprises in life. This was a good one.

That was the saddest movie I have ever watched. All the hours of training, all the sacrifices all the incredible pressure. Exquisitely portrayed. Every cast member was excellent. Every character very well acted. It was a triumph as far as getting the point across. I gave 4 stars because I didn't feel the transcendence of the main character, but only the immense sorrow of all the failed attempts.

A great Blu-Ray transfer of a great movie. Also includes a digital copy. I redeemed it over Vudu and is Movies Anywhere. The movie is possibly the director's best work (though I might put The Wrestler up a notch). Performances are all top tier as well. There are several special features and I believe most are on Movies Anywhere as well.

This is an amazing movie, you really needs to understand how everything can happen when you don’t know yourself. I have to watch this movie two times to understand the entire story. You must have this on your collection.

Black Swan is the kind of movie you expect from Darren Aronofsky. Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis deliver great performances, and it's a great, trippy psychological thriller. The digital copy for this movie still worked in Feb 2021, and was a great addition.

What a great psychological thriller! I saw this in the movies, and got it on blu-ray when it first released...and I was more than happy to get it again, for the cover art and the digital copy that came included with this; this was one of the covers that included the POP ART with the standard cover below. Love the movie and the performances!

This BD version of BLACK SWAN is a huge improvement over the DVD version. The picture quality is improved and the special features are far more extensive, going into even further detail about the making of the film. The main menu, where you access those feature, could have been designed better. It's a little cumbersome navigating around to what you are looking for. Overall though, the BD is a massive step up from the DVD, and well worth the extra money.

No matter how many times I watch this movie, I'm just as bewildered as the first time! It's so unusual, there are so many dynamics at play, the mom and daughter relationship, the dancer and teacher relationship, etc. I love Natalie Portman and I think this is the craziest role she's done! But she really was amazing with both the dancing and acting. I personally like it but it's not a movie that can span across all audiences.

I thought the movie was pretty good, but don't understand what all the "hype" was about. Unless you take into account the lesbian scene, which on reflection, must have gotten people's attention. It was pretty hot from the male perspective. Not a great date movie because it would make most women uncomfortable, but it did have enough twists and turns to make it interesting so I'll give it 4 stars.

Without saying anything plot related, I just want to say that Natalie Portman really shines her way through the movie. The acting is amazing as you see her progress from who she is and who she has become. Black Swan is a film about ballet but don't pass it up because of it. The film is very well made and full of subtlety, richness and depth. Indeed an excellent thriller!

The movie is good as well, and came with a digital code. The art on the Steelbook is amazing. It has a nice metallic shine to it that can't be seen in the photos. Definitely worth picking up if you are a Steelbook collector. The movie was just the added bonus to the Steelbook.
