    I read the reviews and was very nervous about this purchase I'm so glad I bought it. It works amazing super easy to set up (just like the model before) Yes you can hear it running but it is 100 times quieter than the previous model. I LOVE the fact that there is no scoop any more grossed me out. I have 4 kids and would have to trust that they washed their hands. This machine is quite a bit bigger which surprised me but not bad. I think you'll be happy with this purchase. Don't be afraid to try it. I always buy the warranty heaven forbid something happened Best Buy would replace it.

    DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. It will most likely arrive damaged, or not assembled properly. Terrible instructions on how to even get it going, and it will produce a half glass worth of ice every 2 or 3 hours. Then you are supposed to clean and sanitize it every couple of weeks, which is quite an involved process that all of the adverisements neglect to mention. This machine isnt worth 50 bucks, much less 700-plus. I returned this back to Best Buy within a week of unboxing it. You will have to return it to a store yourself, because the box will be almost useless once you unpack the unit. The one star reviews are the only accurate reviews on this site... i wish i hadn't fallen for the 4 and 5 star reviews. One pro to this whole experience was the help i recieved at the store. They did a great job helping me out.

    STOP WORKING IN LESS THAN A MONTH!!!

    This ice machine is a piece of crap. First it only has a 14day return policy. If it's going to break it's probably not going to do it in 14days. It is now 1 month I've had this product and it's been broken for over a week and I can't return it. This machine cost me $700 and it only gave out 2 small cups of ice at the time before it would start making ice again. It wouldn't even fill up at full cup with ice before it was empty. I'll never purchase from here again. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!

That isn’t the performance we would expect, and we regret any inconvenience you’ve had. The Opal can produce 1.6 pounds of fresh ice per hour, and the large-capacity bin can hold up to 2 pounds of ice. If you’re not getting that much, you may want to check the chute to ensure it isn’t blocked. You can also try resetting the Opal by unplugging it for 3 to 4 hours. If you’re not able to resolve the issue, we do have Opal Support available at 1-866-907-6718 – those specialists would be glad to assist. Regarding a return, that may depend on your dealer’s policy. GE Appliances does provide a one year limited manufacturer’s warranty. We hope this is solved for you soon, so you can properly enjoy your ice maker.     very slow in making ice and unreliable. Also don't trust totaltech if something happens to the billing all your protection plans will be lost now I am stuck with this waste of space

    This ice maker produced the first run of ice (1 cup full and went into defost mode. And no more ice until ou went thru clean mode again then made a cup more and sent into defost mode again till it was unplugged and made 1 more cup. I tried trouble shooting solution and more off the internet to no availe. This product is defective and after research on reviews there are many more. I will be returning it, but not for the same model. Its seems like they are all defective. I would not buy this product

    We are upgrading from the original version. Although it’s very convenient having the dispenser, the ice capacity is ridiculously small. Not more than a cup and a half. This makes it it possible to initially use for multiple people at start of party. Lots smaller than previous version. Hard to justify price

    Makes great ice, but sounds like a train in my kitchen. I thought this upgraded model would be better but it make just as much noise as the other model the offer. Great concept, horrible design!!

    Worked great for a few days, but then it started making an awful noise and not making ice. It just kept saying it was defrosting. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in and that didn’t help. I cleaned it and that didn’t help either. I left it unplugged for a couple days and that did nothing. Now I have to return it which is really inconvenient.

    Stopped working after a week. No matter what I try, machine goes into defrosting mode only. Troubleshot this for a week, now it looks like I missed the return window. Even when it work, performance was poor at best. Do not waste your time and money.

    Went into Defrost and clean mode several times each day. I was using distilled water. Wouldn’t recommend this product to anyone. Returned it. The instructions for set up were as clear as MUD!!!

    Do not buy this one. Concept is cool but execution is really bad. You never know how much ice it has produced and you can't see how much water is left in side tank. As far as ice making, it makes about less than half than previous model. it'll say "ice bin full" but when you dispense its maybe enough for 2-3 glasses. If it's 80+ degree weather good luck expecting it to make any decent amount of ice.

    HORRIBLE. This machine doesn't work for anything and Opal will just send another machine that doesn't work. Don't waste your money.

    Nice upgrade from original but not perfect

    I bought this as an upgrade to the OG First Build Opal from around 4 years ago. I really like the dispenser part and the addition of WiFi allows real-time connectivity versus the original's close-range Bluetooth. Sadly, there are no push notifications for "add water" or anything else yet - hopefully those will come soon. The Side Tank has an opaque front so you have to do a visual from the side to check water levels before the tank runs completely dry. A "full" ice bin holds a lot less than the prior models, but it does make more ice quickly. You just are limited to how much ice you can get from the bin. For the record, our first Opal Dispenser was defective with the frequent "defrost" or "clean" warnings. We received a replacement which has been working as expected for nearly 2 weeks. Two improvements needed: 1. Push notifications for low water and servicing needs. Our GE Profile Espresso make uses the same iOS app and does have notifications. 2. A way to check water level more easily. I use a flashlight to illuminate the side tank and view its water level from the side. Overall, a nice upgrade to the original but could use some further improvements.

    Great countertop ice maker. Wifi app is a nice convenient touch. My only issue if i have one is the cleaning cycle prompts seem a little excessive. I have a RO and UV water system and just uses a one size fits all approach with regards to water quality. Other than that does everything as advertised in a fashionable way.

    I really want this ice maker to work but there seems to be problems with durability. Throigh the protectio plan, we swapped our 1.5 year old gen 2 model for this newer larger model. It arrived on thursday, we cleaned and set it up with a gallon of distilled bottle water. Its sunday and the machine is asking to be deacaled. Lefs see how if goes.

    Another disappointment from GE. Returned the prior model as it just went to an unending cycle of defrosting and not producing any ice. Thought this would do better. Alas, seems like this one is the same. Would return this, too

      Hi there, thanks for leaving a review for your Opal. We're sorry to hear about the issues you've had here with your Opal being stuck in the Defrost Mode, we're sure this would be frustrating. Your Opal Ice Maker Dispenser will defrost when it's needed. When your Opal needs defrosting, it may start to squeak as ice begins to build up around the mechanisms. The defrost cycle is automatic and usually takes about 10-20 minutes. This is normal operation. What is not normal is if your Opal Ice Maker is going into Defrost mode too frequently (ex. every day), or goes into Defrost but there are no audible sounds indicating that the auger is frozen. If this happens, it's highly likely the air vents are blocked. If airflow is constricted, the machine will not produce ice normally. - If the Opal Ice Maker Dispenser has the clearance it needs (3" around the sides and back) but is defrosting too often or stuck in Defrost for more than an hour, we recommend that you contact Opal Support at 866-907-6718, M-F 8-8 EST.     Easy to use and rather quiet. However, it takes forever for ice to make!! Doesnt hold a lot of ice and ice falls out randomly from the spout. Not recommended for parties or for a large household. WAY TO EXPENSIVE, NOT WORTH THE PRICE!!
