    "Based on a true story?"

They say truth is stranger than fiction, but I doubt that the actual events that happened in real life actually played like this in the movie. Yes, the robbery actually happened, and he did get caught, but did the real guy, David Ghantt, really evacuate his digestive track in a Jacuzzi in Mexico? Maybe he did, but that is an indication of the film's quality. Back in 1997, Ghantt (Zach Galifinakis) is a happy-go-lucky Loomis Fargo employee, who isn't the brightest bulb but is a lovable guy, nonetheless. He is engaged to Jandice (A lovably strange Kate McKinnon) and seems generally happy living the life in his double-wide. But David seems unhappy after a while, becoming smitten with his co-worker, Kelly (Kristen Wiig), wanting to be with her. She is fired soon after, and stays with a friend of hers, Steven (Owen Wilson). After seeing a security guard rob Loomis Fargo of $18 million, he hatches a similar plan, using Kelly to get David in on the plan. Of course he joins criminal plan, easily robbing a cool but lesser $17 million, but manages to escape, but leaving behind a tape of his crime. Ghantt is sent to Mexico with a few grand, told to lay low, while Steve takes the rest of the takings and buying a luxury car, a mansion and all the bells and whistles of a typical rich jerk. The FBI become involved in the theft, naming Ghantt as the mastermind, not knowing that he is just a pawn in the scheme. David then has to escape the authorities, a crazy hitman and try to clear his name, all the while to win the heart of Kelly. Let me start off by saying I liked the movie and it did make me laugh. Low-brow humor is still humore, but that doesn't mean this film is a riot or ever rise above the low-brow bar, despite the talented cast and direction by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite). It is funny, but could've been more than. A lowest-common denominator comedy, being instead a darkly dry comedy about the criminal life and the consequences it bestows to those involved. But as is, it does entertain, but expect nothing more or nothing less. The Blu-ray of the film is gorgeous, not exactly eye candy. It's sharp and colorful and the sound quality is top notch as well. I wish there were more extras, but the one feature is really nice, titled "The Imperfect Crime". It a 17-minute featurette with the real Ghantt and others involved in the crime, chatting about how events actually went down. The trailer along with a DVD with the same extras is included, but a digital code is not included. Overall, it's a entertaining comedy that satisfied my craving for 90 minutes, but not a classic in the making. Grab it on sale for less than $10, and it'll be worth it.

    Jared Hess shenanigans

First off -- I have a bias for all Jared Hess films. I know they're super cheesy and have weird characters like Napoleon Dynamite or Nacho Libre, but when I go to see one of his films, it's specifically to see all the weirdness that he puts in it. This movie contains all the weirdness of a Hess film and I absolutely love it. It's not as great as Napoleon or Nacho Libre, but it still has a fun story, good music and quirky characters. If you like SNL cast members and comedians, this film has many of them in this film.

The movie previews intrigued me, as well as my interest in Zach Galifianakis's development as an actor - it's another outrageous character portrayal for him but doesn't extend him. But, the characters I was impressed with were Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis in the roles they played. Kristen seemed more real than normal and Jason was just a hoot in his role. And, if you want to do a comparison, make sure you take a look at the extra's to see what the real David Ghantt was like.

Why haven't I heard of this movie before? It is so FunnY! Love Galifianakis! You can't go wrong with a Z. Galifianakis movie in my opinion! Even when playing diverse characters, his heart comes through. As well as his highly hysterical often unexpected humor. He is the classic "clown;" humor and sadness melded into one. The movie was cute and funny and thoroughly entertaining! Where has this movie been?

Hollywood embellished true story of an underpaid armored truck driver who gets duped by less than intelligent others into making off with $18M, & then they double cross him & stupidly go on a wild spending spree drawing authorities' attention. Very comical, but may have been 5-star if told exactly as it really happened. Good movie, anyway.

I watch A LOT of movies, especially comedy movies! And I will have to say this is one of the best comedy movies I have seen in a while and I have personally recommended it to family members and friends who also enjoyed it. The 4 main characters are all season pro comedians so obviously I knew from that it was going to be funny no matter the script, but with the script being based on a true story it was believable AND funny! I would definitely recommend this movie to ANYONE who loves the action-comedy genre of films!

Based off the commercials I had seen, this movie was way better than I could have imagined. It was funny but not necessarily in the way I expected. They didn't make fun of the characters for who they were and they appeared smarter than I thought they would. The character's were awkward which added more depth to the movie.

Love all the actors. They create rather "unique" characters. The fact that it is based on a true story is even more hysterical. We laughed our way through it. Bought it on a whim and wasn't disappointed. If you like silly/ridiculous characters, you will enjoy it.

Sort Of Funny True Story - Played Over The Top

There are 3 of the new GHOSTBUSTERS actors in this movie. It could have been called GB2. Neither movie was that funny. I loved Zack in THE HANG OVER but so far I have not like him in anything other then BIRDMAN - A MUST SEE in my opinion. Here he is again in a goofball roll which fits him like a glove. Having heard/seen the actual guy in the extras on the blu you can see he too was not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I like comedy caper films. I thought it might be like LIFE OF CRIME which I enjoyed a lot more then this movie. It is so dumb you think this can't really have happened but it did. Sure Zack and the other actors push it past real life but the fact was it still happened and the people involved were just crazy. If you like Zack you'll probably like the movie.

Kristen Wiig, as the seductress, and Zack Gailfianakis, as David her target, make great comedy together. Zach throws in a lot of old fashion, stumble around pratfalls. Wiig is especially good as a bumbling femme fatale. One possible criticism of the movie is that it seems to make fun of trailer park yokels, but the movie is based on a true story, as the real David reveals in the special features, and the real David is ok with the spoofs. So enjoy it in good conscience.

A very funny movie that is based on an actual true story. Zach Galifianakis and Owen Wilson are both really good for their parts. Later in the movie they are joined by Jason Sudeikis who is a hit-man and is absolutely hilarious. Recommend this movie and you will not be dissappointed.

Naked Gun, Airplane, Austin Powers, the films by the Farrelys...If you like these buy Masterminds without hesitation. My gut hurts from laughing so much. I'm sure yours will too, just be aware it can be a tad rude spirited, so heed the PG-13 rating.

This movie was funny and I still can't believe this was based off a true story i mean i know that Hollywood tends and has to over exaggerate on films but man the extras on this movie as well were really cool too

Zach G. is great in his typical buffoon role. Jason Sedakis steals the show with his over-the-top hitman role. One of those movies you'll appreciate more & more as you watch it multiple times.

Masterminds tells the true story of the 1997 Loomis, Fargo & Co. heist, one of the largest cash robberies in American history told in a zany comedic way. Very funny and the price is right.

It was an ok movie and had some funny parts in it but when I realized it was a true story that kind of upgraded it for me. I would recommend to see but maybe not buy. Doubt I would watch it again.
