Great laptop great tablet. The pen is great, great display. It boots in 3 to 5 seconds. It's fast, battery life is great except if you use the tablet separated from keyboard. I have the MS Display adapter that works well but I have to connect it manually every time I try to use it. So I just got a display to HDMI adapter.

Don't buy Surface - bad support & quality control

I was initially thrilled with this beautiful laptop, however, quality control seems to be an issue with MS Surface Books. In the first week, I had to have the stylus replaced because it wasn't working. Then, within a few months, the screen malfunctioned (a whole 1" section across the bottom lost touch sensitivity). I had to return the unit to the Microsoft store for a replacement. Then almost to the day on its 3 year anniversary (when 3 year warranty expires), yellow splotches began appearing on the screen and it was noticeably distended. After investigating, I discovered that the battery was expanding inside behind the screen and causing it to bulge. This is a known recurring problem that many people have experienced with Surface Books and other Surface models. Eventually the screen will crack or peel off. A laptop as expensive as this should NOT have so many defects and should last more than barely 3 years. Microsoft is charging $600 for a repair if it is out of warranty. I luckily got them to replace it under warranty, but it took weeks and then they sent me a poorly refurbished unit whose screen started to split from chassis in less than a month due to (drumroll please) an expanding battery behind the screen....Ugh. Now I'm going on my 3rd replacement! I'm hearing that this bulging battery is a problem with virtually all Surface models. And this issue has not been fixed in the new Surface Book 2 or 3. Buyer beware!!! How is this NOT a recall or class action lawsuit?

    Microsoft builds defective products

Purchased Surfacebook i5, 256GB, dGPU on-line with expedited shipping. Out of the box it booted to the UEFI screen. Microsoft tech support disconnected my first call after about a 15 minute wait. Finally after spending a full day attempting to make their product work, they explained it was a hardware problem. Microsoft's solution was to send me a box to ship the defective unit back to them. Then they would send me a refurbished unit (if I wanted a used unit, I would have purchased one to begin with). This would take two to three weeks. This isn't my first experience with defective products from Microsoft. I had to return both my Xbox 360 and Xbox one because they were defective. I do not believe they can build a product that is not defective. My advice is to stay away from Microsoft hardware and buy a Mac. Apple may be slow to innovate and their products are expensive, but at least it works.

I have the Surface Book with Core i5, 256GB storage, 8 GB RAM, Dedicated NVIDIA Graphics card. The screen is brighter and clearer then any screen out. You can make it so bright it will hurt your eyes (impressive). The color is 100% Adobe RGB (best out). The keyboard has a perfect balance of feedback and quietness to it, but also you know you are typing on it. The tablet portion of the system is lighter than my SP3 Pro and SP4 Pro weighting in at 1.6 lbs. Having a 13.5" screen with a 3:2 aspect ratio feels like you are using a 15" #incredible to get work done#. The speakers are louder then my SP3 but still has a higher sound to them #not much base, but I would take volume over bass any day#. The pen is 10x better than the older version #I am not an artist, just use for notes#. The fact that the huge buttons are not on the pen make it easier to hold and use and now with the magnet to attach on the side it is perfect. The NVIDIA graphics are able to run any modern game out on medium settings which is impressive. #No this is not a full blown gaming laptop like the Alienware's systems but this is also more productive#. There are plenty of ports on this system; 2 USB, 1 Mini display port, 1 full size SD Card slot, and the power adapter slot you can use to plug in the new Surface Dock expanding even more ports and LAN adapter. The trackpad is glass now and feels like the MacBook Pro line #best in class for trackpad# so it is perfect. All gestures work exactly like they should. Battery life: you can expect to get around 8 hours of actual work done #or 12-14 hours just watching videos#. With the tablet off the keyboard you can get around 2.5 hours of work done #but you can charge the tablet even while not plugged into the keyboard so no issue if your by power#. What's not to love? Only thing that would have made this better is that the keys were black #but then it would have looked exactly like the MacBook so I understand why they didn't do that#. I hope this has helped you in deciding if you want to purchase this beautiful and powerful laptop 2-1. Click the like button if it did, I appreciate it.

A Fantastic Device with a Few Minor Flaws

For those who want a quick answer--buy this computer! It is a beautiful, powerful, and unique machine and is, at the very least, worth trying out for 15 days. For those who want to know a little bit more about why I think this is a worthwhile product, my review will first consider some negative elements of the Surface Book and then will list the positive points. These points are in the order that I think of them and are in no particular order. Negative: -The backlighting on the keyboard is a little dim and slightly uneven. I by no means think the uneven backlighting is bad enough to even truly complain about, but it must be mentioned. - Due to the odd aspect ratio (3:2), some full screen programs will default to a lower screen resolution. In order to bump up the resolution on these programs, more often than not there will be some letterboxing on either the top and bottom or the left and right. - The rubber feet aren't very tall or grippy. This means the device can potentially slide around, and if you use it on a glass or some other sort of textured surface, there may be some scratches from the hinge. -The headphone jack is at the top right of the screen when used as a laptop (which is most of the time for most people), and while I understand that this is to allow headphones to be used in tablet mode, I would have preferred to have it at the bottom of the screen so cables don't dangle across the keyboard. Positives: - Screen resolution is beautiful, the color accuracy is much-appreciated, and the screen size is perfect in my opinion. I personally like the aspect ratio, as most of my work is done in Excel, and I am able to view more cells with the taller-than-usual display. - The keyboard has good travel, is tactile, and well-spaced. - The trackpad is the best I have ever used on a windows computer and nearly matches those I've used on MacBooks. The only reason apple products may have an advantage is because the texture on the Surface Book's trackpad is a bit rougher. - The design is unique, and I find it quite beautiful. When something as simple as a hinge is one of the defining features of a device, you know the designers have done a good job with it. - The magnesium alloy case feels nice, is generally cool to the touch, and seems sturdy (Not trying to test that though!) - The pen is very responsive, and the eraser functionality is more useful than I could have hoped. - When only using the tablet portion, the device is far lighter than I anticipated, and still a fully capable machine. - The specs are quite good. Yes, I understand that you can get a much better spec'd computer for the same price or cheaper, but the build quality will not be as good, and the tablet functionality is something that I find quite important. If you intend to use this as a tablet, even just a small portion of the time, this is an incredible device that I wouldn't trade for anything. If you don't ever use the tablet, it is still a good computer with strong specs and a good design, but you could find better value elsewhere. Either way, there's no mistake in purchasing a Surface Book.

This is a great product! My first laptop with SSD and it definitely makes a HUGE difference. The pricetag was high but it was worth the buck. Pros: Speedy, nicely crafted, easy to use, portable with or without the base, more than enough power to meet my personal and professional use. Cons: A little on the heavy side, Microsoft can do a better job of extending the battery life on the Tablet (not the keyboard base), pricey

I've been using the surface book for about a month now, and it has been very useful. I especially like the Drawboard PDF program for taking notes directly via stylus on lecture slides and hand outs. The touch screen is very responsive and the screen resolution and speakers are good. The only negative point was that, one time, the surface book's screen turned black and was unresponsive. I manually shut it off and it wouldn't turn back on (and I made sure to plug it in--it wasn't a battery/power issue). I waited a couple hours and it eventually turned back on like nothing ever happened. I don't know what was wrong and nothing has ever happened since then. Hopefully nothing else will ever happen. All in all, I am very pleased with the product. It has also gained much attention by my classmates and teachers, and now they want one themselves. It's light and versatile and functions as a laptop and tablet. The tablet/screen portion houses the hardware/memory and battery. The keyboard portion has it's own battery, too, so when both are connected to each other, the battery life is pretty long with minimum to moderate use.

A very different kind of laptop

My initial experience with my surface book was actually very, very, VERY, bad. When I first booted it up, it refused to update and kept freezing. I had done a lot of research before investing in the product so I already had an idea of what the problem was. After resetting Windows, which fixed the freezing and refusal to update, it was smooth sailing. I didn't realize how useful the clipboard/tablet portion of the laptop was until I had a guest come over and I simply pulled off my screen was able to show them some of my pictures that windows 10 automatically pulled from my one drive (which was awesome). If you've done any reading on the surface book then you already know how small the battery is in the tablet but it does the job if you just need to take it around to read or surf for a few hours. The build quality on this thing is absolutely amazing. I intended to connect my gaming mouse and keyboard for typing papers or to play an occasional game but the keyboard/trackpad combo is the closest thing I've felt to perfection in a laptop. I still will use my mouse for gaming but I don't think there's a person on this planet who enjoys playing a 3D game on a trackpad.Speed is also not an issue. Going through and loading all of my programs and setting up my accounts was a snap and the surface book never showed a hint of slowing down while I had 6+ windows open that were all retrieving their own info. I also loaded up World of Warcraft and had that going at "Good" settings and a stable 50+ FPS. My only complaint about the surface book is of course price but I fully understand that quality cost more and there is no other product that can do what this one can. I only buy computers and similar devices every 5+ years but I fully expect this device to serve my needs for a long time

I have been needing a new laptop for a very long time. The one I had before was acer and it was running on windows vista. I hated everything about the thing. So when I came in for a new one I had done some research but I really didn't know what I wanted. The worker that was there was extremely helpful. I told her what I wanted to be able to do with the computer and she showed me all of the options available. One of my main things was that I wanted a touch screen. Originally I was going to get a mac, but they don't have touch screens and they're not flexible. The next I was considering was the lenovo yoga, but the issue was that when it flips backwards the keyboard is exposed. So she showed me this one and when she showed me that the screen is detatchable to use it as a tablet (or to flip it around and keep the keyboard attached since most of the battery power is in the keyboard) I was totally sold. I've had this computer for about two months and I am very happy with it. Videos are amazing on it and I have very little issues with it being slow... I realize it's because it's new, but this is the fastest computer I've ever used. And I love that it allows some personalization with the keyboard choices. I will definitely be getting one of the soft keyboards for travel to avoid damaging the regular one. And I love the Kate Spade zip cases they have for it. Overall I am extremely happy with this computer. I'm definitely glad I chose this over any other ones. I wouldn't switch, ever. Definitely recommend this laptop. It's expensive, but in the long run it will be so much better.

    Great computer for a student

Starting out college can be a hastle, with the moving, and the classes, and the sheer amount of stuff needing to be done alone. It's a pretty big responsibility, and nowadays everyone needs to go through the process. What does any of this have to do with a computer made by Microsoft? The help they give to students. While not much, Microsoft seems to have a new target audience with its products: the college student. From sales to students to free* copies of their programs (*with the purchase of some hardware or another), what Microsoft seems to be doing is admirable. Now is the help they give anything monumental? Not really, but it's appreciated. This is mostly because the computer in itself is on the pricey side and made for a niche audience. Microsoft has made some great cheaper products, such as the original surface series, so if you decide to go for a cheaper computer, definitely think about that. Now the one problem the ultimate surface book pro mega edition faces is a problem that creates other problems. It feels like Microsoft is competing with apple directly. This in itself creates many issues. The storage on this is incredibly small if you're thinking of working with videos or animation, so you'll either have to buy the more expensive 500gb or 1tb model, or just get a external hard drive depending on your wallet. The price point on its own is monstrous and there is some awkwardness in explaining and figuring out things this computer does on your own spare time. For example, there is a dedicated graphics card built into the more expensive versions of the computer, which best buy doesn't really explain to the unwary consumer. "Do you want the 500gb/8gb ram with dgpu, or without." Now if you're thinking of gaming or animating on the computer, you should probably think about getting the graphics card, which isn't spectacular, but does it's job well. All the extras on the computer is really helpful for a student as well, such as onenote (which you can get, as well as office 360 for free, you should look into that yourself as it isn't advertised). Lastly, this is where I tell you the fact that I have heard of problems hardware wise, but I have only just bought it, and I will add a review if any of the battery issues and what not is true on my computer. For now, it works just fine and is fun to work with, both in class, and in your spare time. Ending words: try to weight the pros and cons of the computer on your own, and with the price point of apple computers, it's very obvious this is meant to be Microsoft answer to the MacBook, price and all. As I have used Windows for all my life, I don't think I wanted to learn the ins and outs of apples osx, windows 10 is user friendly, it was between this, and the surface pro. Thank you for reading, and get busy weighing your options. Pros: +++Applications galore, almost anything you want for school and for fun, Microsoft works well with +++Office 360, and by extension Microsoft word, Excel, etc are free for students +++Screen and keyboard are easy to change into a few configurations, each for somebody. You can detach into tablet mode, or reverse the screen for animators and artists. ++Light and easy to work with ++Fast in terms of starting up, finding files, etc because of the internal ssd ++dedicated graphics card is ok to slightly above average +Best buy gives webroot security for free, which is a light antivirus, although I prefer Kaspersky +Does what youve read about, so I'm gonna avoid repeating info about the touch screen and pen. It does it's job, and it does it well. Cons -----why are you so expensive (this is probably the only important drawback) ---i read about hardware issues with the book, and I will write a review if any of that arises. So far I've only had an issue with detaching and reattaching the screen to the keyboard, but that was because of me messing around with the computer ---a ton of learning how to use it. It takes you a while to just read about the secret features of the pen --ssd, while fast, is small in the cheaper versions of the surface book. Unimportant to some, but extremely important to content creators and gamers --the graphics card is decent and can handle stress, but the resolution on the book is pretty wierd, being 3000 by 2000 (I think) and cant handle newer games that well -the pen uses AAAA batteries, what store sells that

I have had countless laptops, everything from Gateway to Apple and this is by far the best laptop I have ever had. I got this model because a 512GB SD card is only $199 and an i5 chip with 8GB RAM is enough for me. It's just as fast as the MacBook Pro 15" I had with an i7 and 16GB RAM, but the Mac was $2500 and had no touch screen, no tablet, much less battery life and weighed MUCH more! Photo editing is simple with the included apps. I am VERY happy with this purchase.

    Exciting Computing Platform

I knew I was going to buy a Surface Book, I just didn't know which configuration. I ended up with the i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, dedicated GPU setup. For a premium priced product, I felt this configuration had a good bang for your buck (it helped that the only other model in store was the $2600 variant). I have been a fan of the Surface platform and have had a Surface Pro 3 since launch. The Surface Book has everything I loved about touch integrated OS popularized (at least for me) in the Surface Pro line and adds battery life and graphics capability. Performance: I have been able to stream all of the Steam games in my library without any issues and routinely run Photoshop and Blender from the Surface Book. If you are wondering about the dedicated GPU, one of the best examples I can give is from rendering within Blender. I compared the rendering time of an object at 3000x2000 resolution; with integrated graphics, it took 1 minute 22 seconds. With the dedicated GPU enabled for Blender, it took 9.5 seconds for the same render. The hybrid cooling that was incorporated into the Book and the Pro 4 seems to help significantly with the device not throttling performance. My Surface Pro 3 is an i7, but my Surface Book (i5) seems to perform just as well. More importantly than the performance though, is the fact that I can silently use the Surface Book. My Pro 3 would sound like a hair dryer whenever I attempted more CPU intensive activities. Setup: As I mentioned above, I have been using Surface Tech and Windows 10 for quite a while. Device setup was not an issue. I read about some people facing difficulty with login etc... I did not share the experience. I entered my existing Microsoft account info and was off and running within minutes. I will admit that there were two large updates that happened during my device setup, so it is very likely this is why I did not face similar issues as early adopters may have mentioned. Battery: Battery life was one of the main drivers that pushed me toward the Book instead of the Pro 4. The day after I purchased the product, I went on a business trip. I took notes/casually used the device for 10+ hours (on battery) a day at the conference. It definitely outpaces my Surface 3 in longevity. Since I purchase a model with the dedicated GPU, the 60 watt charger was included. The tablet/display and keyboard/base can charge simultaneously with the 60 watt charger, and do so quickly (I think a full charge is about 2 hours). Other: I am not artistic enough to appreciate the difference in 1024 levels of sensitivity in the new pen vs the old, but I can tell you it writes well on the screen. In what might seem a trivial thing, I was happy to see the magnetic attachment on the display side, so much improved over the attachable loop to the type cover on the Pro 3. Gripe: I am not a fan of the headphone jack on the display/tablet. It could just be the equipment I am using, but the jack does not recess completely/snap in, so I have had to think about plugging in my headphones more than seems necessary.

Excellent display. Good battery life that fully charges from 20% in about two hours. Good processing for moderate gaming and video editing. Keyboard is great for typing with keys nicely spaced and good amount of travel. Has two USB ports so you can plug more than one device. A downside to the laptop is when used as a standalone tablet you are unable to plug into power or use peripherals because all the ports are on the detachable keyboard.

I had to replace my 15 inch old macbook pro 2011 and was debating between HP spectre 360 4k 15 inch and lenovo yoga 910 4k 14 inch , macbook pro with touch bar and surface book. Finally went for surface book because I think macs are overpriced and also price increase with touch bar. Got a good deal for thanksgiving on surface book and went for it. Little pricier than lenovo and spectre but i like the tablet and pen aspect of surface book so went for it. Touch screen made a lot of difference for me when compared to mac. Startup speeds are good. The only reason I went for mac before was windows gets slower with time but mac did not do it for me. I have been using it for a month now with all possible apps that i use and so far its going great. People advised me against spectre because its HP and i had read reviews about laptop getting hot. Wanted to go for lenovo but with the same price I could get detachable surface book which is true 2 in 1 rather than bending keyboard back words which exposes keyboard on back and can cause key presses when used in tablet mode. 4 stars are because the price could be little cheaper . Had to do little tweaking for slow wireless ( i gues that was windows glitch) http://www.windowscentral.com/surface-pro-4-slow-wi-fi-fix (this fix worked for me)

I love this laptop; beautiful design and decent internals although slightly expensive. I have always been a Windows user and Windows 10 Professional is a nice plus. Slight frame drop at intensive video. Good laptop for students and professionals alike.

I had a surface pro 3 before this so i am sold on the concept of one device replacing a laptop and a tablet, but I had my reservations since older reviews talked about software issues. I happy to say that they seem to have been worked out. My first few days I did have software crash when detaching the tablet but after my computer finished installing all windows 10 updates those first few days, all problems went away. The track pad is super smooth and precise. It is by far the best track pad I have ever used. The keyboard is good and the screen is very good. I switched from the SP3 to get a more stable keyboard and bigger screen. Typing on my lap is much better than on my old SP3. Battery life is decent on tablet mode when browsing the internet but more intensive tasks will use the tablet battery much faster. I have found myself docking the screen backwards and setting the surface book on my lap with the screen facing me and the keyboard away from me. This creates a nice set up (holds the tablet up for me at the perfect angle) for browsing on the couch and taking advantage of the longer battery life since the keyboard is attached. It is heavier and bigger than my surface pro 3 but it is worth the upgrade.

I absolutely love my Surface Book. I previously owned a surface pro 3 and was in desperate need of an upgrade. I am personally more of a laptop guy than a tablet guy, but the versatility of this product has given me the opportunity to utilize both in the right mix. This "book" is a modern marvel. Pros: Lightweight, decently powerful for games on low settings, very strong and sturdy, touch screen is impeccable, and the keyboard is very ergonomic. Cons: Can be a bit more powerful to handle some newer games on higher settings, battery life is just okay (I get about 6 hours out of 100% batteries, and price was a bit steep compared to other alternatives. Overall though if you don't mind the extra couple hundred dollars, you wouldn't be dissapointed by this amazingly designed piece of equipment. I would buy these as gifts for everyone I know if I could afford it. I hope this helped!

While I was aware of the hiccups many experienced with their new Surface Books, I also read enough to know that all issues were fixable. I'm not foolish enough to think every product is free of some flaw, nor do I let some whiny reviews skew my opinion. I purchased and loved my Surface Book right out of the box! Day 2: it was stuck on a startup screen. Reboot didn't help. An online chat rep gave me a trick to get going and: success! Day 3: similar problem. I spoke with a Microsoft rep via phone this time and, after an hour of updates, I was back up and running. Since then (a few weeks) I've not had any issues. So...out of the box, ensure you have installed all pertinent updates before going further. Outside of that issue, the computer is great! Phenomenal screen, uber portable and fast. Despite my reluctance to spend the money on a new product, I'm glad I took the leap!
