I love Surface Laptop 2 because it is lightweight and perfect for mobile office use. The other great features I love about this product are : quick power on, task view (so we can continue working wherever we left off earlier), visually stunning graphics, the Outlook e-mail, the ability to sync smartphone, photo app, Bing search engine & paint /drawing app with 3D capability & mixed reality camera app. I gave the score of 4 because the battery depletes quickly ( though I didn’t count the # of hours) and the laptop heats up easily while using.

The Surface Laptop 2 really hits some high marks in it's category: For Reference: I use this laptop for Microsoft Office, web browsing, video watching and music/podcasts. All of my points are centered around that context. 1) Display - Sharp, bright and beautiful colors! Great for reading, writing or watching whatever you're interested in. 2) Keyboard - The keyboard is the best. The Alcantara material makes for the best typing experience by keeping the surface comfortable. The keys are well placed and have great feedback. Awesome for anyone who types a ton for their job or hobby. 3) Battery life - Pretty good for a laptop, but this is HEAVILY dependent on what programs one is using. I get 8 hours easily and have touched 10 hours in battery saving mode. 4) Weight - It's light. Go in store and feel one for yourself. I have no issues carrying the laptop around one-handed, if needed. I do travel sometimes and it's nice to have something that isn't heavy. 5) Windows 10 - As a former Macbook Pro user, I love where Windows 10 has come in the last few years. The Surface line really shows off Windows 10 and how it should run. If you're an Apple user and need/want a Windows machine, but want a similar experience to what Apple provides, get a Surface product. 6) Trackpad - It's the best on any Windows computer I've ever used. 7) Ports - USB-A, Mini-display port, Surface connector. Honestly, this is the weakest part of the laptop. I think the right choice should've been: USB-A, USB-C and Surface Connector. Microsoft really missed the mark by adding the Mini Displayport. If I'm going to have to buy an adapter, at least allow the port im plugging the adapter into do other things besides output video. Overall: 9/10. The over experience has been fantastic with my only real gripe being the addition of a mini displayport instead of a usb-c. I absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a simple laptop for Office, web browsing and general content consumption, but want a well-built computer for moderate-heavy use.

    Amazing Casual Laptop

This laptop is absolutely stunning. Let me start with the hardware, I orginally bought the cobalt blue and my god, did it look absolutely stunning, however, I switched it out for the black model and I'm even more impressed. It is so thin and light, making it perfect for traveling or students going class to class, like myself. The keyboard feels really nice to type on with nice responsiveness and the fabric alcantera palm rests are really comfortable and inviting. Performance is awesome for casual people that want to surf the net or do very very light media editing. However, I am packing the I5 model and it excels and is fast at the tasks I do, which is word typing, power points, surfing the net, and reading online books. Media consumption is great too, however, there are black bars more present on this because of the 3:2 aspect ration. Amazing screen with very responsive touch too. Battery life is phenomenal, pulling in 8-9 hours of constant use on the internet, media consumption and Word typing. I have only two gripes with the laptop: Weak integrated GPU Only 1 USB type-a port. Long short is that, if you are a student or someone that is going to use it for browsing the internet or a lot of typing and dont mind the 1 USB port, then this laptop is for you.

A Great Laptop and Macbook Air Alternative

    |

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Overall this is one great laptop, and an excellent alternative to the MacBook Air or perfect computer for a previous Mac user. My rating is 4.5/5. My Model - Surface Laptop 2, 8GB Ram, 256GB Storage, Core i5 (8th Generation), Matte Black. My background is that I'm a previous Mac user. My last laptop was a 2013 MacBook Air and while I would have loved a new MacBook Air (2018), the keyboard reliability issues were a deal breaker for me, and luckily I'm skilled in both Windows and Mac. Build Quality/Design - Excellent build quality, close to Apple's Macs, although the Macs do feel the slightest bit sturdier, but compared to an HP, Lenovo, Dell or any other windows laptop, this is at the top of the list. An option for metal instead of alcantara would've been nice, but take good care and be a little more careful (and don't get the silver model) and the alcantara should wear well. The look is really nice too, they definitely took inspiration from the MacBooks but instead added a more straight edged design theme overall, and the whole product looks and feels high quality. I really like the inclusion of multiple different colors. I chose the Matte Black due to it being on sale while others weren't, but the Burgundy also looks great, and I love how bright and vivid the Cobalt Blue is. While the Silver presents a more MacBook-like look, I would not go for that one, as the alcantara wears better over time in darker colors. The laptop has a good heft to it without feeling heavy, and is easily portable while offering great lap-ability (something the traditional Surface computers (which are really just tablets) can't really do). Screen - An excellent screen, at 13.5 inches the size is perfect for most, and colors look great, while the 3:2 aspect ratio is great for viewing documents and web-pages as there's more vertical space available. The screen can also be used as a touchscreen (if you're into that) but overall very good and comparable to most current laptops. Bezels aren't the smallest or the thickest, but overall good and a nice in-between. Ports/Charging - Here's the mixed bag for the laptop that most users/perspective buyers find fault with. One USB-A, a Mini-Display Port (Do people still use these anymore?) and a a headphone jack, that's it. While I don't use any USB-C devices or need a port for them, I can see how many would be upset by this as USB-C offers great versatility and power. The USB-A port is a nice convenience, especially when sharing documents with other computers/users, but the mini-display port should have definitely been a USB-C port instead to be more useful. I can't remember the last time I used a mini-display port to be honest and doubt many know what it really is. Charging is very similar to Apple's MagSafe 1 in which its magnetic. The charger does seem a little flimsy but the design is similar to Apple in which it will disconnect if stepped on adding a feeling of security. I do wish it were on the left side of the computer though, but that's just a personal preference. Keyboard/Trackpad - The keyboard is the one thing previous or current Mac owners will fall in love with. Unlike current Apple keyboards, the keys feel great and are full of excellent travel and feel, and good back-lighting. The keystroke is predictable and overall its super easy to type on this computer unlike the new Macs for some users. The trackpad is a typical Windows trackpad, in that its overall precise and the size is average, but Apple's current trackpads are still the benchmark in that they can be clicked anywhere and at any firmness of clicking while offering different levels of feedback. Gestures and scrolling do feel a little more awkward and less smooth than on a Mac, but that is mainly due to Windows and not the computer itself. The inclusion of an FN on/off key is genius as I tend to prefer to use the FN keys for buttons like volume, playback and brightness, etc. but when needing them for actual FN functions (like f1, f2, etc.) its really convenient. Software - Windows 10 is probably getting close to Windows 7 levels of perfection, at least in my opinion. When I got my MacBook Air, I remember that the disaster of Windows 8 had just been released, and that was one defining factor of why I went for the Mac. Thankfully the start screen is not an entire page but just a menu again, and navigating the file system has been easy for me. I haven't found much fault with Windows 10 other than the annoying automatic updates. Mac users likely will need more time to adjust to a new OS, but overall it isn't too difficult to use or adjust to. Price - Like a MacBook the price of the Surface Laptop is high. Truthfully I would not recommend ever paying the full $1299 my model costs, but instead wait until a sale comes around and pick up the device much cheaper, like I did, paying $999, instead of the full retail price of $1299. Those deals while not too frequent, make the pricing easier to swallow, and make you feel better about yourself and your wallet. Overall this laptop is truly great, with its superb build quality and design, amazingly predictable and easy keyboard and other little touches, not only making it a great choice for many Window's users, but also any Mac users wanting/needing to switch and find something a little reminiscent of their MacBook.

The Surface Laptop 2 runs fast, feels comfortable, types well, and doesn't die (as long as I have it fully charged at the start of the day). I use this for school and it works amazingly. It's very light so I never feel like I'm lugging a big flat brick around; the felt-like material around the trackpad is comfortable for my wrists to rest on as I type; the keys have a low profile to help type smoothly; the battery lasts throughout my school day as long as I make sure it's fully charged before heading to class. The only downfall to this laptop for me is that I can't really utilize the touch screen since it can't lie flat. For this reason I will eventually switch to the Surface Pro 2. Taking chemistry or o-chem notes would be much easier with a tablet-mode that allows the screen to lie flat on a hard surface. That being said, this laptop is amazing for writing up papers and reports, so anyone looking to types up notes or papers often would love this laptop.

Surface Laptop 2 is a great product as long as the exclusion of USB C doesn't bother you. The keyboard is great and I'm actually typing this review right now on the device. The battery life is really good and for my use case it can last a day and some without having to be on the a charger ( I have light use case for this, web browsing and some casual typing while in bed, etc..). The display is really nice and I love 3:2 aspect ratio and this is one of the few devices that offer this. The Alcatara fabric on the keyboard feels nice overall but you will have to worry about staining in the long run so definitely keep it clean, I have the black version and I can see certain spot where oil from my skin has left a slight impression on the fabric but no big deal. I have the i5, 8gb, 256 gb storage model for $999 during the sale. That's a fair price for that model as I do think $1299.99 for these specs is a bit too high, especially with devices like a Matebook X from Huawei out there. If you are a Surface product person though and really like the devices then this one is still a good buy, I'd definitely recommend waiting for a sale though and if you have a first gen Surface Laptop, skip this gen and wait for a gen 3 that will hopefully have USB C and some more major improvements as this is more of an incremental refresh over gen 1.

I had been using a Chromebook for a while and it really wasn't getting the job done. Best Buy had this on sale for $200 off and my wife already had a Surface Book (which she loves) which I've also used when my Chromebook kicked it and it works great. I can say the same for this laptop. The matte black finish is gorgeous, the Alcantara cloth finish on the inside around the keyboard makes your writs feel wonderful when typing on the excellent keyboard, and the keyboard itself is amazing to type on. I don't really sue the touchscreen much if at all since it's a laptop and not a tablet but when I have, it responds immediately and works great. I have had no issues running any Microsoft Office programs on here, watching Netflix and other online video streaming, or playing some light games like Minecraft.

I bought this laptop for my wife, whose 10 years old Sony Vaio finally called it quits. As far as I can tell, she is very happy with it. It is light, attractive to look at, has a very good screen, and very good battery life. She likes the unique design (the palm rest is covered in a gray fabric of sorts), and it was a major selling point for her (being design-conscious). Best Buy had a very good promotion at the time of our purchase - we paid the same as we would have paid for the same laptop with half the RAM and SDD space. Overall - no complaints, but we have been using it for only a month.

My 6 year old MacBook Pro was getting slow and too heavy to carry around so I needed a new laptop. I travel and move around the office often so I need a laptop that’s light and can do tasks such as browsing, watching videos, office work and light gaming. The Surface Laptop 2 meets all of my needs. Here are some of the pros and cons about the laptop Pros: - Really light weight, barely feel it when it's in the briefcase and really easy to carry it around both when opened and closed - Fast start up times. Less than 5 seconds from pressing the power button to desktop screen if you don’t count the typing in the login info - Sleek design. I’ve looked at several different laptops (hp, Lenovo, XPS..) and picked the Surface Laptop for its minimalist, sleek look - Form factor. The surface is functional as well as looking good. It’s easy to carry, easy to open with one finger. And one thing I really like about the laptop is that it doesn’t slide when I open the laptop. Some laptops would slide back whenever I open the top, and the Surface does not - Speed. Very fast boot time and handles everything I do effectively. I don’t do heavy gaming or intensive video editing so can’t comment on that, but it’s perfect for everyday use Cons - Only one USB drive. This becomes a problem when I use a mouse and I need to charge my phone while I’m on the road - The charging port is small and located near the bottom of the laptop. It takes me several tries to connect the charging chord to the port, every single time Overall it’s a very good laptop that meets my needs. Highly recommend

      Hi there,

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review! We're thrilled your Surface Laptop 2 is hitting all your marks for a quality work and travel device.

To address your USB port concerns, Microsoft has a Surface Arc Mouse that can connect to your Surface Laptop 2 via Bluetooth, which will free up that USB port for you to charge your phone. In addition, Surface Arc Mouse can lay flat which makes it a great travelling companion. If you would like to learn more, our friends at Best Buy have a Surface Arc Mouse here: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/microsoft-surface-arc-mouse-black/5859103.p?skuId=5859103.

I have spent a few days with this laptop and I must say that it is a gorgeous laptop. The surface laptop 2 is the perfect laptop for most people. It is a great device for everyday use to work in MS Office, check email, webs surfing and some moderate video or photo editing. I purchased this laptop for my work needs and it covers all areas that I need it for. I had the SP6 and while I loved that device, this was the better fit for me. I loved the experience that I had with the surface pro 6, it was fast, light, portable and versitile. However, when I removed it from my 27" HP monitor, it showed its one real drawback. The screen size! The screen is gorgeous and amazing to look at, however, when using MS Office the lack of screen size makes everyday use a bit challenging. I needed something that was just a portable as the SP6 and offered the same gorgeous display in an elegant design. That is where the Surface Laptop 2 comes in. I love the 3:2 aspect ratio screen and the 13" is perfect when wanting to work at a coffee shop on the couch. You just get so much more viewing area and that to me was enough to make the switch to the Surface Laptop 2. The performance is the same as the SP6 and I have experienced slightly better battery life with the SL2. The alcantara keyboard is holding up well, although this is something that I am going to be very cautious about since I purchased the black model. I just loved the color and design on this color SL2 over the silver, blue and burgundy. Only time will tell how the alcantara will hold up and from my extensive reviews, it should hold up just fine. The black SL2 is just gorgeous and an amazing well crafted laptop. The typing experience on the SL2 is just far better then what I was experiencing on the SP6. The keyboard is solid and has great key travel, it feels just well build and makes sending emails and using MS Office just a joy. I did like the SP6 type cover, although after using it for over two weeks, I just hated the hollow sound that keyboard made. I am always on the phone and my clients could hear me typing when I was taking notes. It is a small annoyance, but enough for me to consider the SL2 typing experience. The speakers are also a huge plus on the SL2. They are LOUD!! Sound amazing and I find myself playing music on here more than on any other device I have (bluetooth speaker or iphone). So far, I am incredibly happy with my purchase of the SL2 laptop. I am looking forward to using it extensively for work and personal use. Another reason why I went with the SL2 over the SP6 was that I was hearing rumors that the SP6 was going to get a major refresh in 2019. I could see that happening as the form factor of the surface pro has been mainly unchanged for a number of years now. The SP6 could use thinner bezels, updated ports and a slightly better typecover/typing experience. With that said, it was another reason for me to switch to the SL2 over the SP6. I will look to buy a new Surface Pro device once it is refreshed as I loved it that much, but for right now in 2018, the SL2 just made more sense for me. I can't wait to see what else Microsoft has up its sleeve in 2019.

Microsoft did it right with this computer. Yes USB C would be nice but I’m sure it’s in the works. Bought mine when the $300 discount hit. Made my decision easy. Battery life gives me 8 hours. Screen is beautiful.. Boot up is fast and with Face ID no password is great. Speed is top notch. My 2nd choice was a MAC. Nothing lacking on this Surface Laptop 2.

Purchased this on Black Friday and I didn't really need a new laptop since I have two year old Lenovo T450 laptop already. But let me tell you that I'm glad that I did. This is so much faster compared to my two year LT! This one starts up within seconds plus the battery usually lasts two days of use where my older one I had to charge every day. It's a plus that it's 1/3 as thin and 1/2 the weight of my older LP as well! I would highly recommend!

I wound up returning my Surface Laptop 2 as it did not get anywhere near the advertised battery life and had some imperfections in the finish. Real use battery life was more commonly to be around 7 hours. This was a deal breaker for me as I was aiming for something to get 9 hours while this laptop has an advertised use of 14.5 hours I believe. I knew I wouldn't get 14.5 but when I got only about half I was not at all happy. What I did enjoy was the experience to use Microsoft branded computers and see how they did. For those who aren't aware, Microsoft accessories have held a type of esteem similar to Apple since the 80s and 90s. They do have a reputation to get things right so my curiosity was whether this transferred to their products. I considered the Surface Book but the loose hinges, poor battery life for the tablet and albeit goofy look when collapsed steered me away. All I was after was mainly a laptop so the while the Surface Book is impressive, it is still in it's Freshman or Sophomore release. The Surface laptop on sale and fitting the bill more so as a laptop with a cleaner cut made it immediately appealing. Then I started using it. The keyboard feels gummy at first. As though when you press down there is a rubber pad your key hits which is cushioning every strike. It is simply different but overall the key travel and resistance were great. The hinge on this is also solid and feels like a winner. The screen is also a great resolution and picture quality is stunning but be sure to check it out in store for the refresh rate. When watching movies there is more of a slideshow effect where you see each frame so there is no fluid motion. I did not notice ghosting as some users experienced. The sound could use more low end but the speech in all media is spot on. You will easily understand what anyone is saying at all times so you should know this laptop excels at something. If you're like me, watching movies and muddy sound is a no-go. Performance was not an issue and honestly this felt like a laptop to compete with a Macbook... except for the battery life and the lack of USB C support. It is almost there but not quite. I would still recommend it but you should know that you buy this with built in obsoletion. The moment a model is released which is more up to date with USB C, Battery life and perhaps a few other things here and there which are in fashion this guy will go out the window. I look forward to what Microsoft will offer in the future.

I would recommend this to a friend
