Does a great job cleaning but software not perfect

I’ve been quite frustrated with my previous robo vacs from another big name and had to try something different. Let’s see if the Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged Robot Vacuum lives up to my standards. Packaging was sufficient with no damage, unboxing and setup with the phone app was quite quick and easy. One note on the setup is the Shark Clean app directions were wrong on setting up the Wifi, you need to look at the quick start card included with vac for the wifi connection directions. (This could be fixed in the software/app by the time you read this). The vac was shipped with 40% charge, and based on the app, needs 50% to do its first explore run, so expect to wait a bit after powering it up. I wish the power cord was a little longer, I had to use a short extension cord to locate the base where my previous one was. After I finished the setup, I tried to register the Shark PowerDetect through the app and kept getting a “Something went wrong. Please try again” error. When the unit finally hit 50% charge and I sent it out on the exploring run, I immediately got a “dirt sensors need cleaning” error in the app. It continued and this error has not shown up again and everything seems normal. The mapping run went quick, only took 10-15 minutes Setting up the map in the app for zones, rooms, etc went ok, but not perfect. My first time through the setup and edit took about 20-30 minutes, I saved the map and when I went back in the app map, none of my edits were saved and I had to start over. The second time went a little quicker and saved properly. When creating a no-go zone, there is a limit for how small of a no-go zone you can create. I am unable to create a zone small enough for a standard couch or other small spots I don’t want it cleaning or trying to clean. Having that all done, I was finally able to schedule the cleaning and let it clean the house. I ran the first one while I was home so I could monitor it and make sure everything went ok. The navigation seems to work well overall and it doesn’t waste time trying to figure out where it is or needs to go. The carpet detection also works well lifting the mop at proper times when needed, but the obstacle detection wasn’t perfect, it ran right over some extension cords we had temporarily laying on the floor. It didn’t get tangled up with them either, it just ran right over them. Overall noise level while running seems quieter than other robo vacs I’ve had. When the Shark parks at the NeverTouch base after a job, the self empty is quite a bit quieter than others I’ve had, but runs a little bit longer. The mop cleaning and drying process is also pretty quiet. After running a daily cleaning schedule for a week or so I can add the following comments. The Shark Power detect does seem to find a good amount of ‘debris’ in our house, even though we keep the house pretty clean with no pets or kids. I was most impressed by the amount of dirt the mop seems to find, the waste water tank was pretty dirty. Shark did include a bottle of cleaning solution concentrate for the first clean tank fill. After the first week or 2 I already received an alert on the app that the clean water tank was empty. If you're mopping every day you might have to refill every couple weeks. I’m ok with that because I think the reciprocating mop on the Shark is actually cleaning up layers of dirt the previous mop dragging vac left. In the first couple weeks I’ve only had 1 instance of the Shark not making it back to the base, it got hung up on the edge of a rug thinking it was stuck on a cliff. Otherwise it’s been cleaning while we are at work, and making it back to it’s base with no help from us. Even though the mapping is accurate, on the daily scheduled runs it likes to skip 2 rooms even though I’ve verified doors were open and nothing was blocking it from going into the rooms. If I schedule a cleaning on just those 2 rooms, it has no problem going there to clean. After a cleaning run you will get a notice in the app that shows you areas that were cleaned. I see no way of looking at a history of cleans, it only shows the last clean. Bottom line in my opinion, this Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged Robot Vacuum is not perfect, I have not had any robo vacs that were. It does however, do a very good job cleaning with minimal fuss from you. Most of the quirks I’ve found seem to be software related so hopefully Shark is listening and can do updates. This Shark comes in at a great price point for the value you get and how well it works doing it’s most important job, cleaning. Hopefully it holds up long term as most Shark products do.

      Hi Brijan,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We’re sorry to hear your PowerDetect ThermaCharged Robot didn’t meet your expectations and had trouble with carpets and thresholds. This model is designed to handle most thresholds up to 1 inch and automatically detect carpets. For best results, we recommend creating no-go zones for trouble spots, keeping rugs at least 8 inches from stairs, and cleaning sensors regularly with a dry cloth. If furniture has moved since mapping, deleting your current map and running a new Explore Run can also help improve navigation.

      Kind regards,

It seems like there's a new robot vacuum/mop wonder-machine released every day, each one promising truly hands-free cleaning and offering a bevy of features to justify what is often a pretty high price. No stranger to vacuums robotic and otherwise, Shark's latest high-end entry promises to clean your floors and then clean itself with minimal intervention on your part. What sets the Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged apart from previous "NeverTouch" models is the heated mop pad washing and hot air drying after each mopping run, promising a cleaner, germ-free experience. Having had a robot vacuum that neither washed nor dried its mop pad after use I can attest to the strong odor that doesn't take long to appear, to say nothing of the same dirty mop pad being used again and again. The Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged arrived in typical Shark fashion, which is to say well-packed in a box plastered with advertisements for and details on the product within. That said, everything was well-organized and free from styrofoam, though with a good amount of plastic wrap present. Physical setup was straightforward and involved little more than choosing a spot, snapping the ramp to the base unit and the side brush to the robot, filling the tank with water and the included cleaning solution and placing the robot on the base to charge. I appreciate Shark including an extra side brush, as these do wear out. Unfortunately, getting the ThermaCharged robot up and running through the Shark Clean app was more difficult than it should have been. The app was able to find and connect to the robot pretty easily, but when it came time for the initial mapping run, the vacuum wouldn't proceed, as it wasn't charged past 50 percent. This seemed to confuse the app, as it couldn't proceed with mapping, but didn't seem to have a good way to pause the setup process. If I excited the app and went back in, I could no longer connect to the machine, even though it was on the base and charging. I discovered physically removing the robot from the base and then putting it back would jumpstart the connection; I had to do this a few times until the robot decided it was charged enough to go on a mapping run. I made sure to turn on all the lights in my apartment and move everything mobile (chairs, small tables, air purifiers etc.) so the Shark could see into every corner and hopefully generate a solid map on the first try. With a LIDAR sensor on board I figured this wouldn't be too difficult. I sent the ThermaCharged on its first mission and it spent 10-15 minutes wandering my apartment and exploring the boundaries of each room, much like any robot vacuum will do. After the vacuum returned to the base I went back to the Shark Clean app to see the map it had generated. I have to say, I was a little let down. Despite the its LIDAR sensor, the Shark had trouble determining the edges of each room, seemingly confusing furniture for walls. I was especially frustrated that the ThermaCharged mapped the edge of my large sectional sofa as a wall, despite the underside being wide open and tall enough for the robot to fit under. I deleted this initial map and sent the robot on a second mapping run to see if the issue would resolve itself, but found the Shark once again decided the couch was the edge of the room. I decided to continue with setup and see how things went. The robot correctly found the edges of one or two rooms, but the rest I had to merge and/or split myself, which is a bit more tedious than in other robot apps I've experienced. Annoyingly, the Shark Clean app decided my bathroom was too small to be divided into its own room, leaving me no choice but to combine it with the hallway and call it all "bathroom." I've never had this issue with other robot vacuums. More or less satisfied with the initial room layout I continued to the next stage of setup, which involves selecting each room with carpet or rugs and sending the robot out on a second mission to map these floor types in more detail. This is not just a mapping run but a full room cleaning run, with no choice but to let the robot clean each room with a rug or carpeting until it's satisfied. Unfortunately for me, the robot ran out of charge halfway through the second room and announced it would return to its base and re-charge before continuing. With no way to pause the setup process I had to let the Shark fully recharge and then automatically finish carpet detection, which resulted in the robot waking me up in the middle of the night when it decided to finish what it started. Alas, if I have one tip for setup, it would be to let the battery fully charge before mapping! After the protracted setup process I found the Shark had accurately mapped the boundaries of the rugs everywhere I'd asked it to, and despite the map showing my couch as a wall, the robot went underneath and mapped the edges of the rug just fine. I hoped this meant the main map would update, but it has not. Nevertheless, the Shark will clean the entire living room, including under the couch, without issue. Hopeful things would improve from here, I decided to explore the Shark Clean app and connect it to both Alexa and Google Home. The app is cleanly designed and generally responsive, but very limited in function. You can trigger cleaning of your entire home or specific rooms, and choose whether the Shark vacuums or vacuums and mops. If you choose a whole-home clean you also have the option to vacuum, then mop, wherein the Shark actually detaches the mop pad, vacuums all carpets, then returns home to pick up the mop and vacuum/mop the remaining hard floors. These functions all generally work as intended. When in mopping mode the Shark will pop its behind up in the air to travel over carpets and avoid wetting them, which is as effective as it is funny to watch. The mop pad moves back and forth and extends toward edges as promised, and I've been generally pleased with its performance. I wouldn't expect it to scrub off dried-on stains but it has more than enough ability to clean up daily grime. Vacuuming performance is generally good, too, with the unique edge cleaning puff of air blowing debris out of corners and into the pickup path. I don't notice any visual or audible change in vacuuming power on carpet vs. hard floors, although Shark says the unit has automatic floor detection. There's no way in the app to adjust suction power and the only mopping control is "eco" mode that uses less water. I would recommend turning this on as the Shark by default gets the floors fairly wet. After each run the Shark returns home, empties itself and washes/dries the mop pad (if it was used). This self-cleaning process is fairly quick and quiet, especially compared to other robot vacs I've used, and the mop pad drying fan is barely noticeable when running. This is good because there's neither a way to trigger a mop cleaning cycle or prevent the base from running one, meaning you're locked into an automatic cycle after each mopping run, regardless of what time it finishes. Over the two weeks or so I've been using the ThermaCharged, I've had to rescue it once or twice from getting stuck under low-hanging furniture, and it often gets confused by running into the leg of my bed when starting a cleaning mission, but otherwise it has generally been able to go about its business with little intervention from me. Although initially successful in connecting, Shark's Google Home integration doesn't seem to work at all; based on my research this is a recent problem that many are having. Alexa integration has functioned for me, thankfully, with basically full control available. This has allowed me to set up routines for automatic cleaning when I leave the house, which is how I prefer to use robot vacuums for minimal disturbance with maximum impact. The Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged is a bit of a mixed bag. It has very good physical cleaning abilities, including effective self cleaning and drying of its mop pad. It's been able to run unattended almost all of the time, only getting stuck to the point of needing rescue intermittently. Unfortunately, the Shark Clean app is a letdown. From the buggy setup process, to the unforgiving map creation, to the overly-simplistic controls and general lack of information, the app leaves a lot to be desired. Other robot vacuum brands have far, far better apps, and once you've used a good app it's frustrating to be stuck with this subpar app experience. I've been able to get the ThermaCharged to generally behave the way I'd like, but it feels like this is in spite of the app, and only made possible because the Alexa integration has worked for me. This machine would easily earn four stars, maybe even five, with a better app, but as it stands I have to give it three, with the caveat that most of my disappointment is in the app, not the physical cleaning ability. If Shark can improve the app experience, add more control and generally bring it to feature parity with competing brands, they'd have a much more compelling product. My advice would be to wait and see if the app improves before purchasing this machine, unless you're content with a very basic, inflexible digital experience. I'm hopeful Shark will continue improving the app but until then I would proceed with caution.

I finally got around to mapping the house with this Shark robot. I have had two other brands for comparison and this one was BY FAR the easiest to set up. The app is very simple to navigate and within ~10 minutes you are up and running. Physical set up was also a breeze! The accuracy of the map is very impressive with only a couple minor tweaks to it. Renaming the rooms was also very easy and after that, it was was off and running! This Shark also does fairly well on carpet and rugs which the other two I had to mark those areas as off limits. This vacuum does a great job cleaning and navigating. I have seen it get "hung up" on small/tight areas or corners of small legged tables. But, unlike the other two, it did figure out how to get out and continue on with its job. I am really impressed with this machine. My next venture will to run the thermacharged mopping and clean the dog and kitchen areas! It has done a great job on the dining and office areas so I have zero worries that this machine is going to replace my other two. Great job Shark!

Robot vacuum cleaners just keep getting better

We’ve owned two previous robot vacuum cleaners, and the Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged Robot Vacuum and Mop makes our third. From the first one until this Shark, I’d say that they just keep getting better and better. First came the unpacking. This shark robot vacuum was packed in the box very well, and it was easy to take out and do the physical set up. I like to say that robot vacuum cleaner setup is not the most user friendly and Shark does not give clear instructions on how to fully clean the robot when needed. The Android phone app was easy to install, and my Shark account was a breeze to set up. Robot vacuum cleaner setup has never been a plug-and-play endeavor. It is not for the tech non-savvy or for anyone who fears technical devices. It is not something you want to purchase and have shipped to your elderly grandmother who has trouble using her cell phone. You will not be doing her the favor you think you are. Maybe someday, but robot vacuum cleaners have not reached that point yet. Once the Shark was all set up and the robot was docked in its station, we let it fully charge the first day. The second day we turned it loose and let it map the house. That took several hours as we expected it would. It seemed to do a pretty good job of that, and we just let it wander and tried to stay out of its way while it mapped the house. Just like with our previous robot vacuum cleaners, we have yet to trust the Shark Robot Vacuum Cleaner’s cliff sensors at the top of our basement steps. So, we keep a gate there that prevents it from getting too close to the edge. I’m sure the cliff sensors will work fine, everything else does, but we have a 9-foot finished basement and that’s a lot of steps for it to fall down. So far, we’ve been unwilling to risk it. But that’s on me and is not the fault of the vacuum cleaner. Later that second day, we let it start cleaning and it mopped and vacuumed the 2,050 square foot main floor really well. It has a rotating corner brush on the side of the vacuum cleaner that does a wonderful job cleaning in all the corners where debris collects. Especially in the kitchen where debris gets collected in the corners of the kitchen cabinet’s toe kick. The robot vacuum senses the difference between our bare hardwood floors and the throw rugs we have scattered about. We do not have any carpet in the house and so this is a bare wood floor and throw rug situation which is a cakewalk for robot vacuum cleaners. When the Shark Robot Vacuum Cleaner happens upon a throw rug it climbs on top of the throw rug and increases the suction power. When it climbs down off the throw rug back onto the bare hardwood floor, it reduces the suction down a bit to the bare floor setting. If you have a throw rug that has lost its nonslip grip on the bare floor, the robot vacuum cleaner will push it around and never be able to climb on top of it. So, we had one old throw rug that we had to replace. The robot vacuum cleaner climbs on top the new throw rug just fine. One thing I wish is that we could set up non-vacuum spaces or things the robot vacuum cleaner should go around so you don’t have to pick up every little thing that is always in the same spot every time you use it. Yes, we can block out rooms, but it would be nice to block out a few square feet in the middle of the room. For instance, we have a protective silicone mat for the pet water to sit on, and the robot vacuum cleaner doesn’t know how to avoid it and if we fail to pick it up, it will attempt to wad it up. Another, for instance, is the master bath shower that has a slight wheelchair ramp from the bathroom floor to the shower floor. If we don’t bend a pool noodle to block access to the shower, the robot vacuum cleaner will go into the shower and start vacuuming on the wet floor. I like the fact that there is a concentrated cleaning solution that goes in the clean water hopper, so it is not just water cleaning the floors. The Shark Robot Vacuum Cleaner seems to do a better job of mopping the floors than our previous robot vacuum cleaner. The Shark doesn’t wet the floor too much and the floor dries within a couple minutes after the robot has passed that point. Overall, I feel I could recommend this Shark to anyone who is looking for a robot vacuum cleaner. They’ve come down quite a bit in price over the last 10 years since our first one and at the same time increased their accuracy and what they can do. Just remember that all robot vacuum cleaners have a somewhat steep learning curve and that is the price that you will pay for the convenience of not having to walk all around your house once a week lugging a vacuum cleaner.
