After Donnie Darko Richard Kelly was primed to be one of the biggest indie filmmakers of the 00's. Southland Tales was his sophmore follow up and well... it's something else. A convoluted story with random plot threads weaving in and out until it kind of just ends. I remember when this debuted at Cannes and got the worst reception in the festival's history. The film came and went with people mostly ignoring it. Seeing the original cut was interesting, but I'm not sure anyone outside of Kelly's fanbase will want to rediscover this one.

This is one of my favorite so bad its good films. You can really try to see what Kelly was going for if you have an open mind. Also this is one of the Rock's early roles where he shows how talented an actor he is. I can't tell if he is a good actor trying to play a bad actor, or just a bad actor at this point but he has the right balance. Anyhow this contains the Cannes cut which is longer and really doesn't change much, just a little more exposition and reorders a few scenes. I would say it is the superior cut. The movie looks really good also. This is my first Arrow video purchase and it wont be my last.

I’m only knocking a star off because the movie isn’t great, but I had seen it already and knew that going in. Such a bizarre film, and I was really on the fence about picking it up again until I saw the price, which was great. Arrow Video’s pricing is pretty good when comparing them to similar labels, which are a little more hit or miss. Twenty bucks is fine for this weird trainwreck of a film, which is packed with all sorts of extras that will hopefully make more sense of it.

I bought this without seeing the movie so here is a unbiased opinion. The film itself is an enigma, I’m not sure what I watched or if I even liked it but I was thoroughly entertained (for better or worse). Arrow Video always gives amazing sets and this is no different. This is loaded with extras, two cuts of the movie, and great packaging that looks fantastic on the shelf. Just be warned that this is a great product but the movie itself you should be wary of.

Really overlooked movie from the early 2000’s. Just quirky enough to keep you interested and most of the actors play roles against their usual type, especially The Rock. If you missed it when it came out, now’s your chance to catch it.

This is a difficult movie to review because it takes a couple of viewings to understand. On the one hand, I want to rate it higher for its uniqueness and ambition. On the other hand I want to rate it very low for the lack of polish or clear story. This Blu ray release of the film has both the theatrical cut and the Cannes film festival cut (which is a little bit longer). The director Richard Kelly claims that both versions are unfinished products...which means he made a very ambitious movie with far too much in it and couldn't polish it to the ideal version in his mind. It is sci-fi/comedy/drama/satire, and requires a lot from the viewer. The tone varies a lot from scene-to-scene, and the acting is both bad and good somehow. If you like eccentric stuff, you'll want this in your collection. If not, you should avoid this movie.

Look. This movie, from the moment it came out, was one of those pieces of cinema that you either love or hate. What the movie isn't is boring. If you're a fan or if you've never seen it, this bluray version is the way to go. It has two versions of the film as well as a documentary among the extras. I was happy with my purchase!

This is an odd little movie that became an unfortunate career killer of the Donnie Darko director. Still an intriguing watch when you're in the right mood for it, and the bonus features are insightful.

This is a strange and wonderful movie. Best Buy had the version I wanted in stock, so I purchased it online and they brought it out to my car. I recommend the two disc set that includes the Cannes print, plus many extras.

I have been waiting for years to finally see the Cannes edition of Southland Tales, and it didn't disappoint. Always unfairly maligned, but now finally available in its original form. Give it another chance to see the director's vision.

I saw this movie when it first came out and enjoyed it - even though it is absolutely bonkers and makes little to no sense. I’ve quoted it a lot I’ve the years and still enjoy the performances so I had to pick up the new Blu Ray. It’s so weird and wacky - and it’s hard to tell if it wants to be taken seriously or not. At this point I really enjoy it mostly as an absurdist comedy with little to no point. Definitely worth a watch, although Richard Kelly could easily have cut an hour or so out of it and not lost any of the fun.

This is a older movie that we had not seen and was delighted when I was able to purchase it from BestBuy at a good price and my wife really enjoyed watching it and am looking forward to watching again anytime we want.

Has aged better than I remember. Good picture/sound quality. If you didn't like it when it first came out, worth revisiting. May have a different reaction to it.

What Aarow did with this release is incredible. Both cuts look fantastic and tbe supplemental material is enlightening. It's really unbelievable that the fabled Cannes cut is is available im this form.

I love Southland Tales even though it's considered not as good as the graphic novel. Love Sarah Michelle Gellar in anything she's in.

Great movie. Very funny, interesting, and near prophetic. The blu ray itself is also great, has lots of special features including the original extended cut of the movie, and a booklet.

Meh. The director's follow up to Donnie Darko was a strange choice. The movie didn't grab me as I hoped it would. If you're a fan of the film, the disc is loaded with excellent special features.

Only love for this opus. It’s huge and ridiculous , but full of the most outward creative force you can find in a major motion picture. Great new blu ray edition.

Richard Kelly's follow up to Donnie Darko is so weird, convoluted, and just bizarre that you either love it or hate it. You know my opinion! It's awesome enjoy the ride!!

Not a review on the film itself, more in the packaging. Arrow rarely releases something of sub par quality. If you’re worried this isn’t worth the money you’re wrong. Buy it
