Beware of this device! I have been using Square for years successfully (swiper unit plug in). I received this unit as a present, and was excited to try it out. I set it up at home, double checked that it was connected by bluetooth, and ran several successful practice charges. I took it to an art show this past weekend, and following the EXACT same instructions linked the reader to my phone via bluetooth. After inserting the customers card into the unit, after each and every sale my phone indicated "Transaction Complete". I returned to the square menu and checked that the proper amount was listed for each transaction. I had just short of $2000 in credit/debit card sales. 3 days later when no money had transferred into my banking account I called square. Seems the contactless and chip card reader wasn't properly synced with my phone (even though my phone indicated the reader WAS connected via bluetooth) and was not operating correctly. It didn't capture a single complete credit card number. Im not sure if this reader works properly without also purchasing the charging dock. Im not the first person this has happened to. According to Square they are not responsible and Im on my own. 10 of 40 customers requested electronic receipts. Square reached out to them . As of today I have heard from 1 of the 10. I wish I had never used this reader. It's fussy -- and it doesn't tell you when there is a problem with a transaction. I learned a hard lesson (which cost me just short of $2K. Never again.

I processed a transaction and my card chip reader was not working properly, I manually entered the customers card information. He was with me and signed for each transaction. After waiting and waiting for them to review my account and submitting a bunch of personal information they requested. They withheld my funds (and are holding them for 90days until March 2019) and permanently deactivated my account. I have a few issues with this. When they did this, it wasn’t my first time using square. I processed several transactions already and had had used square for months prior. Second, I am the owner of a small up and coming handyman company it’s just my husband, one worker and me, I was waiting for my deposit but I needed to start the job, so I spent about $900 of my money on paint and materials while I got the deposit. So now I’m out $1930 from the labor, $30 Square charged me for using their service, plus the $900 I spent on materials. It’s Christmas time, I’m broke, we painted someone’s house for free and to top it all off, Square and their representatives won’t tell me why they are holding funds and why they deactivated my account. Matter of fact they won’t even answer my messages and emails. I tried calling and I get a recording. Awful. Don’t use square. They have terrible customer service. And don’t care about their customers.

    Best on the market

Why are credit card processing companies so shady? In addition to monthly statement fees and other misc. costs, I used to pay fees to lease my merchant processing equipment. I would've switched sooner, but I was locked into a 24 month contract. Now, do I wish the swipe fee was closer to 2% vs. the 2.75% that they currently charge? Yes. But it's still way better than the alternatives on the market. I've been very happy with the Square app -- surprisingly, it gets updates pretty often on both iOS and Android platforms. I figured that they would've been less active on the Android side, but that's not been the case. If I were to have a complaint about this particular reader, it's that I find that the bluetooth connection has terminated overnight. It's just a pain to have to re-pair every morning.

The 2.75 fees are high but everything works as advertised. I used it to sell miscellaneous goods (Craigslist, Let's Go) on a Friday and money was in the bank Monday. If you want your funds on the same day. You have to set up up a debit card and that's another 1% interest. If you add all interest to items being sold, it's still cheaper to the consumer than them going to a store and paying state or local taxes. This was a good purchase. Works great at flea markets, food stands..ect. Some reviews on websites claim they don't like the customer service. I really don't see why they need customer service. All chip or credit swipes show instant to the consumers debit or credit card. Make sure you have the latest update for the app and make sure your iPhone is updated.

I was a bit disappointed to discover that the contactless/chip Square reader does not have magnetic stripe reading capability built in. It came with a separate mag stripe reader (the old familiar Square reader that plugs into the headphone jack)—so if you're looking to have all credit card entry methods available, you'll be keeping track of two devices, not one. Another disappointment was to discover that while the chip reader works very nicely, it doesn't permit payment with a PIN. The buyer still has to sign on the touch screen... Not a big deal, but I thought the whole point of smart chips was to use PIN code as authentication...

I run a small vendor table about twice a year. Square gives me a point of sale system which is easy to use as well as inventory tracking. The Square contactless and chip reader allows me to be more modern than many brick and mortar stores taking chip cards, tap to pay as well as traditional swipe. Square associates e-mail addresses with CC numbers so that once someone has entered their information for a receipt, they can always get an e-mail receipt without having to re-enter information. I sometimes have to wake it up and there's no battery level indicator, but I'm managing despite those things.

Naturally, when you are dealing with someone's credit card, you don't want anything to go wrong. For me, it seems like there is a learning curve with most electronics. BUT...this is so easy to use and I am beyond pleased. The Square charged quickly. The instructions are user friendly and easy to understand. I had no idea how simple this could be. And Best Buy sells a warranty for about $9.00 that covers the product if you have any issues or if you need to upgrade to a newly released version down the road. They even keep the information on your account so you don't have to find the warranty receipt.

A Solid Point of Sale Gizmo

This is a solid Point of Sale gizmo for those who need to sell their goods and/or services while taking credit. Square has been an innovator in this industry and this reader is more proof, but the product needs some work. The package comes with a cable, the chip and NFC reader, as well as the separate swipe reader. The swipe reader is the same one they've had for years... but the chip & NFC reader (which works with both Android Pay and Apple Pay) is a solid looking and feeling gizmo. It looks and feels very much like a product made by Apple. The less than 5 star review is due to two issues: the iffy/inconsistent connectivity, and the super-easy-to-steal nature of this gizmo. Any bit of a delay seems to cause the bluetooth connection to be lost. I have an iPhone.

I love love love this card reader. Between the card reader, mobile apps (iOS and Android) it is the best of the 3 I've used. The contactless / chip reader is FAST and easy to use. I prefer it over any other hardware/software combo. We use the reader for merch lines that can sometimes be endless during a rush. This card reader and service helps us keep the line moving as there is usually no lag in the processing and the app is ready to go again as soon as the transaction is complete. Other card reader/apps make you jump through a bunch of screens to start a new transaction once the previous one is complete. Square gets it and with a great design. Thank you Square!

We went to the square when the old credit card system became too expensive to maintain. This system is very fast simple and easy everyone has been complementing us on how fast it is. the only negative drawbacks I find are that the iPhone jack is not available any place but Square, itself I did end up getting one but I did have to get it through the mail, even the Apple store doesn’t sell it. And the fact that you have to decide whether you want to print receipts you need an old iPad to do that or get people used to emailing or texting receipts to their phone.

I bought 4 of these Square Readers for my company because we have employees that sell product at events. They were previously forced to only deal in cash which cost us potential sales and increases the risk of cash being lost or stolen. The square readers can swipe, accept Apple Pay or Android Pay, and even read chips so the transactions are secure and less likely to result in subsequent chargebacks. The reporting is great because it shows all sales by each card reader - and you can enter All sales, not just credit card transactions. Highly recommend this product.

I use this reader at craft shows and school conferences that I sell at. Compared to the reader that you insert into the jack on your phone, I much prefer this one because it's effortless - you simply insert a credit card into the slot (I can never seem to get the hang of sliding the card correctly) - and it seems to process faster too, so wait times are cut down and keeps customers happy. With that said though, I bought an additional one so that I can have 2 check-outs at the shows for when a line starts to build. I feel that having to spend a little more money on this reader is well worth it.

The Square contactless and chip card reader is a great device to allow clients to pay with their chip enabled card or, the even better way, with Apple Pay, Android Pay, etc. All NFC payment types are accepted. When customers see the ease of use, they are surprised. The only complaint I have is that the actual device is very lightweight. I think Square would bundle this (for the same price) with the stand. I really think the stand should come with this reader. It’s almost necessary to prop up the device and make it easier to slide cards in without picking the whole thing up to insert cards.

Purchased this to facilitate payments on a garage sale. The setup was quick and easy from my iPhone. Within 5 minutes, I had it completely configured. Didn’t get to use it as much as I had hoped the garage sale, but it provides everything it claims for quick and easy point-of-sale capture. I had my day’s sales deposited in my bank in two days, as promised by Square. Excellent technology at a more than fair price.

I needed a more professional way to take payments from my clients other than constanatly punching in the card number. I feel it is def safer, looks more profession and saves the hassle from having to punch in all the numbers and constantly asking for zip code and such. I am not using it on a daily basis yet and since I bought it I have only charged it once it's been a few months. Used it yesterday and still has a full charge :) I love that it is all three in one so I don't have to buy a million devices the swiped reader is a separate piece but comes in the package.

I actually purchased this to use for our garage sale. Yes, we had a HUGE one. People were extremely receptive to it, and it gave the opportunity for people to purchase MORE, and maybe they haggled less on prices too. I did, however, round prices down anyway. So, setup was a breeze. No issues. I think there's a small learning curve with the software, so I'd recommend playing with it a few days, but be careful not to accidentally charge yourself. However, if you do, it's very easy to get a refund! It's a super gadget!

I usually never leave reviews in products I purchase wether they're great or bad. I just don't. But I had too on Square. I'm a freelance graphic designer and do typography. I have a smal cliental base, and there are times when clients want to pay by credit/debit. Square has changed my business game a notch. Now, with square my business has more credibility, and making every transaction seamless from start to finish. Great product for anyone looking to start a business.

Unit linked quickly & easily to bluetooth - & functioned well to take credit card payments (with chip). It was my 1st time using a Square - & found it fairly seamless experience - EXCEPT: it didn't always prompt customer for EMAIL or PHONE - FOR RECEIPT! Note, this can happen if it's a repeat customer, but it is supposed to prompt NEW ones for phone/EM - for receipt. It worked correctly most of the time, but not *always* ... hope they address this soon!

What I love about this chip reader is that you can use it across several devices. I need to use it with my phone and also my tablet. It won’t work on both at the same time but that’s okay. It’s rasy to set up through Bluetooth and the app instantly tells you it’s ready to go. The battery life is long as well. Keep it in your pocket if you don’t have the charging doc and you won’t lose it. It charges via a mini usb cord which comes with it so don’t fear if you have only Apple products.

I really didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised with the simplicity and ease of use. My wife & I have a small business and our now former credit card device was a magstripe reader. We needed a device that would accept chip card payments & found the best one in the Square reader. It accepts chip card payments (easily) and contactless payments (which we haven't used yet). This product also includes a magstripe reader so we can still take payments from people who don't have chip cards. This is the best option available.
