Great gaming TV for the price

TV works great with my Xbox series X and being able to play at 120hz. It makes the gameplay feel so much smoother. This TV supports every new feature that the XSX has. The picture quality is very good, I came from a Samsung TV (KS8000) which still has very good picture quality but where the TCL beats it is the black levels. I was really impressed by how deep the blacks are. OLED TVs still have deep blacks but this is getting really close. You hardly see any graying when there black in the screen. As for some saying the apps are buggy, I have not encountered any issues at all. I've already used Netflix, Hulu, sling tv, Disney Plus, YouTube, Crunchyroll and several more and i have not had any issues. I also have a previous TCL with Roku and I can say the Google TV feela so much smoother. It's not perfect, it can definitely be a bit more organized. I haven't found a way to edit the app list so my most used apps are at the front but I'm sure the platform will continue to improve. I setup my soundbar immediately since I have a Vizio Dolby Atmos one so I have not used the speakers. I don't usually use them as i feel most modern sets don't have the greatest speakers. Overall all, this is definitely one of the best gaming TV's you can buy right now. Any of the next gen consoles will work perfectly with this tv.

TCL 6 Series Google TV...Excellent Upgrade!

This is the third TCL 6 Series TV that I have purchased. I read the reviews and reports about the Google TV software being slow and buggy. The good news is that TCL released an update around Christmas. I purchased this 65" set as an upgrade for my parents over the 50" Insignia Fire TV thaylt I bought for them back in 2018. My father wanted to be able to control everything with one remote so I purchased a TCL Alto 9+ soundbar and Fire Stick 4K Max to go with it. We set everything up and it did take a while to go through the updates. Once that was complete we tested everything out from various streaming sources, Blu-Rays, and older DVDs. The picture is excellent and has some great depth. A noticeable improvement from my own 6 series purchased in 2018. So far there have been no glitches but I purchased a 4 year protection plan from TCL to be safe.

Argh…I reviewed this then the app crashed. Put simply, great TV. I had a 6 series from 2018 with roku interface. The google tv has had a few kinks, and TCL has been very helpful. It seems with the last software update, those went away. Im glad I got it!! And appreciate this vivid screensaver pic since I myself rescue chameleons..

TCL has done an amazing job with R646 series

TCL has done an amazing job with R646 series. Coming from Samsung 55KS8000, the think I liked the most about this model is Google TV. Many reviewers mentioned that local dimming algorithms are not great, but I found picture quality pretty good. Wishlist: TCL should release a good quality 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbars which pair well with their TVs. A feature similar to Samsung's Q-Symphony would be an icing on the cake!

Great TV But, still has a few software bugs

Great TV Overall! The picture is stunning colors and the mini-LED is great. However, my one criticism is the software needs some debugging, as the remote microphone doesn't work with all apps in the Google TV software for example works with Google assistance, but the microphone is unresponsive in apps like Youtube and Disney +. I'm hoping this is a bug that can be fixed in the near future otherwise I would consider returning the TV. See the image below showing the bug with microphone usage in apps.

First, the good: I picked up this TV along with a Samsung Q60a as they were the same price. I put them side by side and played with them for a while to decide which one I wanted to keep. I will say that this TCL 6 series had a better overall picture than the Samsung, particularly when it came to motion on the screen - less blurring and stuttering with fast camera pans, etc. Sound was quite a bit better on the TCL as well. Also, the TCL has Dolby Digital, 4 HDMI inputs as opposed to 3, and better local dimming. I also researched reliability, and Consumer Reports ranks these upper level TCL tv's right there with the top brands (Samsung, LG, Sony) of the same price point. So if you are going to spend about $1000 - $1500 on a TV, the TCL's are as good as anything else in that range. So in the end, I kept the TCL and returned the Samsung. Getting the picture to look how I wanted has taken some work, particularly the Dolby Vision HDR. But after fiddling with it for the past week, I have finally gotten the image to where I want it, and I have to say it looks great. This TV can get BRIGHT, which helps compensate for the dim look that HDR produces. I will say that I can now really tell the difference between streaming quality vs physical media quality. A standard 1080p Blu-ray disk is upscaled really well and looks like native 4k, a bit better than streaming 4k content from Netflix (though that still looks great too). I have found that if I have any issues with the quality of the images I'm seeing, it is NOT due to the TV but due to the source. TV is great. Now for the BAD: The only issues I have with this TV have to do with the software and App implementation. VUDU straight up will not play any of my movies (which is where my whole digital library is). CBS app makes this TV chug. The TV crashes on me (shuts down, must be unplugged and replugged) at least once a day. All of this is after the September software update. Volume control often has input delay from when I push the button to when the volume actually changes. Sometimes (50% of the time?) pushing the settings button while watching something forces the TV back to the home-screen, closing the app. I have contacted TCL and VUDU support about these issues and am in the process of providing them information. I'm in the holiday return window so I have until January to return this TV. If TCL can fix these issues with a software update, I will give this tv 5 STARS and would strongly recommend it. But if they don't fix it by January, I'll be returning it. For now, I CANNOT RECOMMEND this TV in its current state.

I’m pretty happy with this TV so far. I had a Hisense U8G for a few weeks before needing to exchange it because of a defect in the panel and I will say the color accuracy is better on the R646 - I have no dirty screen effect and the bugs that were plaguing the unit upon its original release have not been troublesome for me. It doesn’t quite have that same pop in speculate highlights that the U8G did, but it’s a very well balanced and sharp image. I’m not a gamer, I’m here for accurate film playback and it does 24fps content nicely. I’d probably give it closer to a 4.5 if I could because the remote feels cheap and the operating system needs some tweaks but it’s still early in the lifespan!

    Unstable Google TV

    |
    Posted .
Owned for 1 week when reviewed.

The main reason that I bought this TV was the great reviews that I have seen on the quality of the picture based on the mini LED feature of this model. I am also a huge fan of Google TV over Roku and have been using a Chromecast with Google TV since it was released late in 2020. I used YouTube TV for my TV streaming services. All of these things were the reason that I was so excited when the TCL 65R646 was available and on sale at BestBuy. The implementation of Google TV on this model is not as good as the stand alone Chromecast w Google TV since it is not available to be controlled by Google Home or Google TV apps. The Google TV portion of the TCL TV is not actually "visible" until it is turned on. I can turn on my other Chromecast w Google TV enabled TVs from my Google Home Hub or from the Google TV App with the remote control function, which is very convenient. Not surprisingly the sound quality is not great, so I have my LG sound bar hooked up via an optical connection. The sound quality using Bluetooth is not good for some reason. The problem is that the internal TV speakers can not be turned off like most TVs given the common use external sound bars. I determined I could just adjust the sound to the lowest setting which is mute and I can achieve the muting of the internal speakers every time I turn on the TV. The biggest reason that I am going to return the TV, taking advantage of the extended return policy of Best Buy until 1/6/22, is the recurring issue of the TV freezing up, going dark and becoming unresponsive. I have spent way too much time on the phone with TCL support, which were quick to answer the calls, but did not really have a solution for my situation. I have been walked through resetting the TV to factory settings by TCL Support, which is quite painful and time consuming with all of the accounts that need to be re-established. I am sorry that this model does not seem to be stable at this point. I don't know if it is the TV hardware, the implementation of Google TV by TCL or the combination of both. My TVs with Chromecast with Google TV have been very stable. I guess I will keep looking for a stable Google TV.

I’m having issues with the TV eARC port. For the most part, the TV and my Samsung Q70T Atmos soundbar are not in sync as it seems. This could be relating to the CEC I turned on so I can control my soundbar with the TV remote. When I adjust the vol on the remote, the TV vol number (level) doesn’t match what’s on the soundbar. If I turn off the TV and back on again, the number/level matches, but after an hour of use or so, the number/level mismatch happens again. I have tried this for 3 days or so. I’m using an HDMI with Ethernet cable so it should have no issues with eARC. However, there’s another issue. The TV and my soundbar output sound at the same time which causes an echo effect. This is really annoying because the sound gets mixed up between the TV speaker and the soundbar. The only way to fix the issue is to turn the TV off/on. I assume a firmware update in the future will fix this issue. For reference, my Q70T soundbar was connected to my 55R517 TCL and the ARC/CEC was working perfectly. I only got this issue when I upgraded my TCL to this 65R646 version. Then there are a few software bugs I have noticed so far. When I exit an app like YouTube and go back to the homepage, I can still hear sounds coming from YouTube even though I'm back on the homepage. Some apps have more of a delay than others, and the delay exit effect only happens at certain times so there's no consistency I can point to. I also have an issue with the setting button on the remote. Sometimes when I press it, the TV doesn't react at all. Sometimes when I'm in an app like Netflix or YouTube and I press the setting button on the remote, the TV would just go back to the homepage. That's super weird to me since the setting button acts as if it's a homepage button. Then there's a lag issue when you press buttons on the remote. Sometimes they work quickly, but sometimes they have a few seconds worth of lag. I own 3 other TCL TVs and they all function really well on Roku. I'm thinking it's a GoogeTV issue that TCL hasn't perfected yet. I'm hoping they will update their firmware soon. If not, this TV will have to go back to BestBuy.

Great TV That Flies Under Radar of Bigger Brands

Extremely happy with this purchase from ease of ordering in BestBuy app to delivery tracking and delivery (done by third party in big box 18 wheeler moving truck). I was considering three 65” options: Samsung QN90A, LG C1 & TCL R646 and I am more than pleased to save the extra grand on more by getting this TCL. Coming from my 65” Samsung KS8000 from 2015, this TV excels in clarity, brightness and unformity. Google TV rounds out the positive experience by giving this TCL TV many great settings and options to perfect your user experience. I really set this TV as a “Dumb TV” by turning off most of its “smart” or “AI” functions and use an AppleTV / Xbox Series S and Panasonic DP420. Couldn’t be more happy maybe other than having the money to spend on a 75” LG C1 OLED.

Great panel but terrible OS/manufacturing defect

    |

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.

Panel is fantastic, actually. I bought this and a Hisense 65U7G on the same day and have been comparing HDR and 4k content on them in the same room at the same time for the last few days. Will return one. This TV has 4 identical quarter-size and equally spaced grey spots at the bottom and needs to be exchanged. No damage to the box, nothing in the packaging shows damage. Must be manufacturing defect. Anyway... TCL OS is terrible, as others have reported. Clunky, slow to respond at time, more layers than necessary to get to sound and display settings and within the first hour of use and switching between the Xbox and other devices, all the HDMI ports just quit working. I had to uplug and "reset" the TV to get the HDMI ports back. What the heck. But... the TCL display is soooo good. There is ZERO backlight bleeding and the clarity/detail and smoothness when panning complex scenes in HDR and 4K is definitely better than the Hisense U7G. The sound from the TCL is waaaay better than the Hisense, but I won't use them so point is moot. In general, TCL form factor is higher quality. I'm so conflicted about the two TVs... TCL has a better display but the Hisense OS is great and reliable. The TCL has perma grey spots on the screen and the Hisense has TERRIBLE backlight bleeding (looks like a Batman sign) and will be used in a dark home theatre room most often. So coincidentally both TVs need to be exchanged due to what seem to be manufacturing issues - part of the panel "lottery" I'm reading. Should I keep the TCL with the better display hoping for OS updates that make it more dependable and usable? Should I keep the Hisense with a far superior OS? We'll see how the exchanged units perform. Right now, I'm leaning slightly toward the TCL.

Phenomenal picture quality but has software issues

Owned for 1 week when reviewed.

Tldr; Great picture quality. But plagued with software bugs. It’s a great set if you plan to use it with a Firestick, Roku, or cable box, and avoid the Google TV smart functions. I’ve had the 65R646 for one week. I’ll start by saying I love this tv and I’m not planning to return it. However it has early-adopter/teething issues. For positives, IMO this tv has incredible picture quality. The blacks on this set are truly black. At night with all lights off and 100% dark room, watching movies that play in aspect 16:1, the black bars on top and bottom are truly black with no screen glow. When watching a scene that goes to all black, the tv disappears into complete darkness, no glow. And yet the bright scenes are so strong it will burn your retinas out, and with very little blooming. The Google TV menu is very fast and responsive (most of the time, there are exceptions, like right before the set does a crash and reboot - see below). It also has 24GB of storage for apps, which is refreshing after coming from a Firestick with only 8GB. I also love that I have access to all of the android apps, including Steam Link, Moonlight, and VLC. I have a PS4 DualShock controller paired to the set and Steam Link streaming from my PC works great even over wifi. For sound, I have a higher end 2.1 powered pc speakers and subwoofer plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack. A really nice feature is you can control both the 3.5mm volume with the remote, and control the built in speaker volume separately, so you can really tweak the sound output. And mute mutes both internal and 3.5mm jack. But it's both a blessing and a curse, as lowering the volume means you need to adjust two settings. I wish there was an option to lock them together. I also have an Avantree Audikast Plus plugged into the tv’s optical output jack, and it stays on all the time, so I can hit mute on the speakers and still listen with my BT headphones, which is great. The sound quality from the speakers is not bad, about what you would expect from half-decent built-ins and sound is pretty decent after tweaking the TV’s EQ settings. Now for the bad. Frequent software bugs and crashes. My first day with the set it crashed and rebooted while watching ESPN+ app. Day two it froze then crashed watching Disney+ movie Avatar, then had no sound on PS5 HDMI (rebooting PS5 made no difference, but sound came back after a manual reboot of the TV). On day three it got the new firmware update (v74) which appears to have reduced the frequency of crashes, but problems persist. It won’t play the new Dune movie on HBO Max at all, it just freezes (but it does play wonderfully from HBO Max app through my Firestick or xbox). The HBO Max issue appears to be any content in Dolby Vision. I tried several (The Matrix, etc.) and they all just fail to play. I’ve experienced at least one crash or major software bug pretty much every day so far. I’m not the only one either, there is.a long thread on avsforums for this set. I’m guessing that TCL did a poor job with QC and/or pushed the R646 out early to catch the holiday season. That’s really a shame because the hardware and build quality are really good but as you can see, it’s getting killed on the bad reviews. Despite the issues I still love this set and am keeping it. All of the issues I’ve had appear to be related to TCL’s implementation of Google TV, so I’m just using my Firestick for streaming, which has no issues displaying Dolby Vision content on HBO Max, or any other issues and looks phenomenal on this tv, it’s an inexpensive bandaid that gets around nearly every issue, though it’s a shame that it’s necessary. I hope TCL does right by their customers and quickly fixes the firmware issues. When they do, I’ll ditch the fire stick, and I’ll come back and update my review.

    Great picture, plauged by issues

This TV has some great picture for the price but there are a lot of caveats. First, software bugs. A lot of reviews here have already gone over them, but a lot of the annoying ones have been resolved. However, that's not to say there still are issues. As of V074, Dolby Vision is still glitchy. I have been reading a lot about users who have issues with CEC support as well. My issues are with the hardware. It's like TCL has no quality control. My first TV had coil whine that was audible from at least 8 feet away. My replacement has dead backlight LEDs on the bottom right corner. I'm getting one more replacement soon and if this still has issues I'm going with another brand entirely since going through 3 TVs is ridiculous to find one without a hardware issue, especially for a TV that TCL considers to be on the higher-end at over $1000.

    Great PQ, Software getting better

    |

Owned for 1 month when reviewed.

This is a pretty great TV overall. The picture quality can be amazing, though it takes some time in the settings to get the most out of it. Black levels are great (though those who claim OLED-level blacks haven't spent much time around OLEDs...) and it gets bright enough for bright rooms. HDR movies and games look great and have the pop that you would want. Motion is great (though perhaps not amazing) for things like fast-paced games and watching sports. Speaking of gaming, this TV has all of the features that you would want like HDMI 2.1, ALLM, and VRR (Sony, PLEASE implement the latter two in the PS5 now). It can do Dolby Vision gaming on the XBox consoles at 4k/60hz, as well. The only issues with gaming are the somewhat unintuitive process for enabling ALLM/VRR and the fact that enabling VRR turns off local dimming. My unit has some bright areas on either side of the screen on a dark screen with local dimming disabled, so that is less than ideal. Sound is...ok. Perhaps a but above average, but you'd probably be a lot happier with a sound bar. So the PQ is great, but the app situation has been much maligned. I have seen two issues with my unit. The first is that the WiFi will turn off and not turn back on without a restart when the TV is left in Quick Start mode. This is remedied by disabling the feature, but you shouldn't have to. The other is issues with the Disney+ app. Dolby Vision in the app was washed out and the audio was way too low. I would normally listen to content with my sound bar set at 12-16, depending on the content. When watching on the TV app, I had to up the volume above 40 just to hear anything. That was resolved with a firmware update (that has not gone out via OTA update yet). Overall, the TV is great and at a great price. There are some software issues to consider, but it is a fully-featured TV in 2021 that won't break the bank. It is a good value premium TV in the same vein as the Hisense U8G (without the ghosting issues). It's not going to beat a LG OLED, but you get what you pay for. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I really wanted to love this TV

Owned for 2 months when reviewed.

This TV is perfect on paper for watching TV and movies, and for supporting all features of the Xbox Series X. Even most of the reviews regarding the crappy software are outdated with the latest firmware updates as of the beginning of December. I ran into one issue that was a deal breaker for me. I noticed when using my Roku Ultra that every once in a while there would be a significant stutter, presumably caused by frames dropping. I assumed it was the Roku since it was a few years old, and I'd never heard of a display dropping frames, as it is usually the device sending the video. After getting the latest Roku Ultra for Christmas, I was still seeing the frames drop. I downloaded Disney Plus on the Xbox Series X and it was doing the same thing. I did see some frames dropping while playing Xbox every once in a while, but I assumed it was the Xbox. After seeing this on two Rokus and the Xbox I connected my laptop and saw it there too. I called tech support and the only thing they could offer me was to try a factory reset. I did that and the problem persisted. I haven't seen anyone else talking about this in any reviews, so it could have been defective hardware. The odd thing was that it only did this when using the HDMI ports, while the apps built in to the Google TV didn't do this. I like the Roku interface better, and the Google TV apps don't seem to have as much capability, so I use the Roku as my primary device. I decided to return it anyway and try a different TV.
