As a total Terminator fan since the beginning, I was swept away by the timeline jump. Not due to such things being standard fare for the series in general, but because of the continuous change that brought back numerous Terminators according to technical advancements. The story, albeit harder to follow than the predecessor's, was tight in it's own right > minus the one flaw being that of the T-1000's clunkiness. However, I saw it in the theater & deemed it good enough to purchase for my collection.

Summer of 2015 lead off with Avengers: Age of Ultron and didn't stop there, releasing some awesome films including Ant-Man, Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation, Inside Out and many others. Although these movies are awesome and I love the ones listed, there was one that I really enjoy but many people pegged as one of the worst of that summer and even of 2015. I didn't particularly like Jurassic World although it was one of the biggest films of all time, Minions was mindless (But became one of the highest grossing films as well) and truly the worst film was Fant4stic for that summer. Terminator: Genisys is one if the more misunderstood films from 2015 and of the Terminator films that is sadly ranked amongst the worst. Fortunately, it is a good movie that deserves a second chance. The movie follows Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) who is sent back to 1984 to stop the T-800 from killing Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke), mother of John (Jason Clarke), the future leader of the Resistance. So it's pretty much the first film, at least at first, but while Reese is being sent through time, the personification of SkyNet (Matt Smith, of Dr. Who fame) kills John (or so we think). Meanwhile in 1984, things follow the same bits of The Terminator, but with the killing of John, the timeline changed, with Sarah and a Terminator called Pops (Arnold Schwarzenegger), this time prepared to kill the 1984 Terminator and find Reese. Following an attack by a T-1000 in 1984 (Byung-hun Lee) and learning of a new Skynet OS called "Genisys", the duo travel to the future to prevent Judgment Day and face a familiar face. I know the story is incredibly sophisticated and many people complained about the story being hard to follow, and it kind of is, truthfully. But, it is easier to follow as it comes along, but what's harder to swallow is some of the iffy casting. Schwarzenegger is back, and probably gives his best Terminator performance here, with the usual one-liners standing by, but it's also filled with the aging of the cyborg, that is having issues as time goes by, but also became more human in the process, as Cameron laid it out in His previous films that it has a learning computer to infiltrate more efficiently to humans. The trio of Reese, Sarah and John though, are miscast. All 3 are too focused on hiding their accents (Courtney is Aussie, the Clarkes English) to give engaging performances for the most part. Lee is a good T-1000, but the character didn't even need to be included, like at all. Other performances are decent overall, with J.K. Simmons being a standout as O'Brien. The screenplay is a tad overcomplicated, and it's uses of humor kind of fall flat, but still delivers a decent story overall. The direction by Alan Taylor does deliver the goods, with action scenes looking great, keeping the pace lively and manages to retain the visual sense Cameron laid out in his previous efforts. All in all, it is a fun movie with great effects and action scenes, but still can't beat the first 2 but handily defeats its 2 predecessors. On the Blu-ray we get a terrific 2.35 3D image, which has loads of depth to the film, along with some great use of pop-out moments. Probably one of the best conversions ever and a must own for 3D enthusiasts. The Dolby Atmos track is of reference quality and will unsettle your foundation, it's that good. The extras, though, disappoint. Although the film only broke even at the box office, I was still saddened at the lack of extras with the core 3D bluray. The film only has 3 featurette, all running about 55 minutes in length but there is still some good BTS stuff and nice looks into the many CGI effects, plot, characters and more. Sad we couldn't get a commentary, but it works for the most part but i suggest either grabbing the Best Buy exclusive or the 4K bluray, which both come with a bonus Bluray with over 90 minutes of material. All in all, a fun film that will satisfy the 3D and sound enthusiast but not many Terminator fans.

The plot of Terminator Genisys basically revolves around John Connor (Jason Clarke) sending Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to save John's mother Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke, no relation in real life to Jason Clarke). Sounds pretty familiar to us Terminator fans, right? What Genisys does is builds on the plots in the previous films by keeping the main plot similar to the first movie, but having Kyle meet with an altered timeline in 1984. This Sarah is much different from the Sarah he was expecting (and much different from the Sarah we saw in the original film) in that she's already a bad-A and knows all about Kyle being sent back to save her and the Resistance and the war against the machines. In fact, she's been being trained by the reprogrammed T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) for many years prior to Kyle showing up. You know in Back to the Future 2 when Marty goes back to 1955 Hill Valley for the almanac and you see the other Marty (from the first Back to the Future) trying to do his thing and get his parents back together? So you have a new movie but still get to see events from the first movie again, like the Enchantment Under the Sea dance scenes? Every time I watch BTTF2, getting to revisit and experience that scene from a different perspective than the first movie makes me so excited, and Terminator Genisys made me feel that same way at times. I've seen all of the Terminator movies multiple times, mostly because my husband is a huge fan of the franchise. They're all enjoyable to an extent (some more than others), but, to be honest, it's been a couple of years since I've watched the previous movies. Even without having seen the other movies in the series recently, I still enjoyed Genisys and have to say that I don't think it's necessary to have seen the previous films recently, or at all. That being said, I do think it could be beneficial and add to your experience to watch or rewatch them before seeing Genisys. The parts about this film that I thought were the most fun were when we got to revisit scenes or hear similar lines from the previous films. It brought the nostalgia factor way up for me, which I loved. There were some things I missed that I didn't realize were nods back to previous films in the series, until my husband leaned over and whispered to me about them, so it doesn't hurt to rewatch the series beforehand, or at least the first two. Again, not necessary, but could amp up your enjoyment. Bottom line - I've always enjoyed science fiction and time travel movies, and this one was a winner in my book. I honestly thought this movie was great. It was action-packed but also pretty funny. It was nostalgic while still being inventive and feeling fresh. I ended up enjoying it way more than I expected and had a really fun time.

It has been 12 years since the last good Terminator film was released, 12 years since Arnold was the Terminator, but all the waiting was worth it! The film starts post-Judgment Day, with the intro on how Kyle Reese meets John Connor with years passed and the inevitable victory over SkyNet with one final offensive to end it all, with the exception of how SkyNet sent a T-800 back in time to kill Humanity's Last Hope's mother, Sarah. Instead of sending Kyle back in time to 1984 and having him do his thing like in the first film, something has changed and Reese is sent back and forward in time (But still back in time, from Reese's POV) with Sarah already the rough 'n' tough "soldier" as seen in T2 and with Arnold Schwarzenegger as her new father figure, Pop, teaming up to take on their toughest and most feared adversary yet... which I won't spoil for you here but watch the film and be surprised and very well entertained!!! I watched this film in 3D in theatres and was delighted how well the 3D was done (One of the best post-conversions ever) and the PQ was fantastic. Although this BBY exclusive was 2D only, the BluRay recreates the theatrical experience perfectly along with the loud and thunderous aural 7.1 core sound (Dolby Atmos surround) being amazing! The extras for the standard BluRay are mediocre, consisting of 3 featurettes nearly running an hour, but the bonus disc is outright awesome with a full length documentary on all things Terminator which is worth the price of admission alone, even if you hate Genisys, its worth owning this disc for the PQ/AQ to show off your 1080p display and best surround sound setup and comes highly recommended!!

Terminator Genisys is a such a great movie experience that does great fan service to the original films. It has a twisted storyline that is almost like a what if, on the first 2 films in the series. I agree with everyone else that the film pales in comparison to Terminator 1 and 2. Its insane to think that todays CGI laden movie industry will compare to the magnificent storylines, acting, practical effects and props of yore. These are the times we live in, for better or for worst. Terminator Genisys also could of done with less humor and should have chosen a better actress to depict the iconic Sarah Cornor. However, what this movie does excel in, is that its a big budget spectacle and deserves a place in every scify movie collection. Hopefully if most Terminator fans turn out to purchase the movie they can continue on with the proposed trilogy, which is unfortunately in doubt. Come on guys we need Arnie to make his trademark Terminator flicks, before my generations ICON is no longer physically able!!!

With audiences growing far more wary of, and sometimes downright venomous towards remakes, studios have been searching for new ways to reinvigorate recognizable brands. The answer has been something comic book fans have been all too familiar with for some time: the retcon. Or put another way, the reimagining. You don't have to totally start over, just ignore or delete enough stuff to basically start from a difference place. It's a tricky thing to pull off without alienating your entire fan base. X-Men: Days of Future Past managed to use alternate timelines to build an entirely new history for its heroic mutants. But what about something like James Cameron's Terminator; a cold metal sci-fi classic that basically forged our understanding of time travel in modern genre movies? Terminator Genisys, the fifth movie in the vaunted franchise, attempts to embrace and completely devastate everything we know and love about James Cameron's time-bending story, and as one might expect the results are a bit scattershot. Rest assured Terminator Genisys is a heck of lot better than the maligned Terminator Salvation, and a fair bit more like a true Cameron Terminator movie. Despite the narrative pretzel it twists into, the film has all of the recognizable nuts and bolts, literally in the case of Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800, who was notably absent from 'Salvation' except for a lousy CGI version. This time around the hard-to-kill cyborg is considered a "guardian" rather than a terminator, sent back in time to protect the life of Sarah Connor, played now by Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke, sporting her "Mother of Dragons" attitude. So how does something like that work? The story begins as we expect. Future rebel badass John Connor (Jason Clarke) leads a human resistance against Skynet and its army of killer machines. When Skynet realizes it will lose, it sends a terminator to 1984 to kill Sarah while she's weak. So John calls upon his pal Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) to go back in time to protect Sarah from harm. Oh, and let's not forget that John also needs his buddy to sleep with his mom so he can be born in the first place. Don't forget that little detail; it makes for some awkward sitcom shenanigans later on. Things take a turn when Kyle arrives in 1984 only to discover that Sarah doesn't really need his help. She's already one tough soldier; she's gone full-blown Linda Hamilton (minus the biceps) and has been protected by the Arnold T-800 since she was a child, nicknaming him "Pops". How? Why? And is that wrinkled skin and graying hair on the Terminator? What? The explanations are convoluted, bog down the story, and frankly are a little ridiculous, but fortunately this film doesn't slow down enough for you to analyze whether it makes sense. There's always a new Terminator to fight (there are a few, including one that has been spoiled by desperate marketing), a new bus to flip, another helicopter chase through the city, and the CGI-heavy action looks great courtesy of director Alan Taylor. He keeps the pace moving faster than a T-1000 can shapeshift forms; those who simply want to watch robots fight and stuff get blown up will leave very happy. Not to say he's quite on Cameron's level when it comes to blending digital and real-world effects but the film looks impressive. In what must feel like the tagline for Schwarzenegger's latter career, the T-800 constantly asserts, “I am old, not obsolete." At 25 years, Cameron's Terminator is an "old" franchise no matter how many times they try to revive it. But Terminator Genisys, despite it not always making a ton of sense, is still the best and most relevant Terminator film since 'Judgement Day', and that means it will never be considered obsolete. Die hards I will recommend this to casual fans however not so much.

I am a BIG Fan of the "Terminator" Saga and I was surprised that this movie actually existed, probably due to some bad reviews from critics and moviegoers as well. I've been watching all the T movies recently to be ready for "T: Dark Fate" and in my recent visit to BB found this gem for a great, great price so, I got it! my T collection is complete (for now). I really enjoyed the movie, the time jump twists and the reset of the Future are great adding that "what if..." moment that we all wonder ourselves over events in history. Anyway, if you are a "Terminator" fan, there's no reason why "T: Genisys" shouldn't be in your library.

The Best Terminator Film Since T2

Like Cameron himself, I agree that Termiantor Genisys is the best film the franchise since his iconic 1991 sequel. I went in to the theater to see this with completely no expectations - the reviews were abysmal, the trailers were poor, and the TV spots did it no justice. To top it all off, this was going to be PG-13. I'm glad I went in thinking this was going to be a stinker -- because it easily became one of my favorite movies of the year. It surprised me at most turns, and Arnold truly is back in a vengeance in this. Don't let the rating fool you - there's plenty of violence, along with some good laughs and great nods to the first and second films. I think the time travel aspect was handled relatively well, and other than the miscast of Jason Clarke as John Connor (to me he is totally unbelievable as the leader of The Resistance), this movie hits its stride right from the beginning. The Best Buy Exclusive version of the Blu-ray offers a bonus disc (which is a BD - NOT a DVD - so thumbs up) with even more special features. If you're a fan of the franchise, this is the version to get. Highly recommended.

It's great to have both Arnold and Emliia Clarke on the Terminator saga. I wanted to know how they fit Emilia Clarke characters storyline, since I know she played her role very nicely in the hit HBO's tv show: Game of Thrones. As the new role as Sarah Connor, it's a interesting take as Arnold as the guardian for Sarah Connor for this storyline; glad to have Arnold back. I don't want to put too many spoilers for other readers, but you do get to see the future battles we all awaited for a long time. I'd wanted to own this copy after liking on how it played out at watching in theaters. Overall, most people are familiar with T2's Sarah Connor, so it will be kind of hard to get used to see another person playing this role; not an easy to play. So relax and enjoy the movie, I recommend it on Blu-ray for excellent picture and D quality :)

This film is a superbly crafted Sci-Fi: Action/Thriller that is equipped with all the toys: Time Shifting, Androids and other interesting machines and bots were the attention getters, as-well-as the films superb cast who really “got-it” and both a Director and Cinematographer who knew what they were doing. The totality of their efforts results in a highly emotional story-line and an audience experience that is a ultra-memorable experience

While the first two movies in this franchise are still the best, this movie is a 'mashup' of the previous movies but alters and weaves them into a new chapter in the series. The action is still there but there is also a new 'semi-comic' twist where things happen at different times, and different ways, than the originals. The story line is a bit weak in parts but the new timeline makes this movie fun and enjoyable.

This movie was much better than expected and certainly better than most reviews out there. No it doesn't have the charm of the first two movies but those were so revolutionary that most people can't get past the wow factor those movies gave off as a whole. Genysis, strictly speaking in regard to special effects, is just like any modern day action movie. Regarding the story, I particularly liked this take on the whole "alternate timeline" philosophy. Doc Brown would be proud that this movie correctly followed past events in current time. Get this movie. You won't be sorry it's in your collection. If you're not quite ready to take the leap to buy it, at least rent it. It's a few hours well spent!

In 1984, Kyle Reese arrives from the future to protect Sarah Conner from a Terminator sent back to kill her before her son John Conner is born. Things, however, are different. Sarah has a guardian of her own, and with help from Reese, she intends to stop Skynet before it goes online and brings forth Judgment Day. Pay no attention to the negative reviews. Come on. James Cameron, the creator the Terminator franchise gave his personal endorsement. While I realize that may not be enough to persuade you to watch this movie, I should mention that he walked away from any involvement with the movies after T2, said he told the stories that he wanted to and was done, but he really liked this movie. While it may be difficult to top T2, Genisys in my opinion is as good. Be sure to get the Best Buy exclusive while it's available for extra content and a great looking 3D slipcover with Arnold on the front!
