Great Story/ Mixed feelings about artwork
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I saw Great Mouse Detective in theaters as a kid and have always had fond memories of it, especially the exciting climax in the inner-workings of Big Ben. The story is an adaptation of the classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries made more easily accessible for children with Basil the mouse detective living in the walls of the real Holmes' estate and filling his role in the story. Because GMD was made during a period of decline for Disney animation, it compares poorly to previous and more recent Disney features. One bright spot, the climax, which caught my eye as a child, also impressed me as an adult. It clearly stands out for reasons I could not identify as a child. Now thanks to a more discerning eye it is easy to identify this scene as the only one in GMD that incorporates computer animated backgrounds. The one useful special feature is the Backstage Disney featurette, which identifies this scene as the first such use of computer animation in Disney feature animation. Another bright spot is Vincent Price's involvement as the voice of Ratigan. (* Editorial review cites this as his first cartoon voice. However, Price also voices the evil Irontail in the 1971 easter tv special "Here Comes Peter Cottontail)
