I'll admit, I had a hard time with this movie at the theater. I am one of the (very) few who actually loved "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", and was expecting "Part 2" of that film. I had to let this film digest a while, before I realized - it is closer to the comic books, and the character, than any previous X-Men film (save Nightcrawler in X2, Beast in The Last Stand). After I let my "nerd rage" subside, and followed the director James Mangold's comments on Twitter, I felt enlightened & more informed to make a decision on how I "feel" about this film. I suddenly remembered that I DON'T remember much about Wolverine's (multiple) origin(s) in the books, and really never truly cared for the books' confusing version much back then. I actually stopped reading "just for Wolverine" after a while. The 2 films are a more clear, concise roadmap to the character we know & love *in the film universe*. Therein lies the most important part. While Mangold told his own story, he took elements - aesthetically & literally - from the books. Not too many, not telling the same old story we all knew for decades - just some elements to keep "the real fans" at least appeased for the moment. So, while this is the Earth-10005, there are Easter eggs & hints - even some panel to frame elements - particularly in this film that keep things close to home. There are things I thought I would not like (Silver Samurai), that I ended up liking better than their comic counterparts. To put it simply, the basic, well known SS just wouldn't work on film as just a "guy in the suit". The giant, mechanized version simply made more "real" sense, cinematically. Had the same effect on me as the "fake Mandarin". Would have been just too corny to be believable on film. Also, BONE CLAWS! *(Really helped my "X-Men 4" script along:) If there was something lacking, it was Viper. It was "Batman & Robin" Poison Ivy, with molting skin, all over again. Bad acting. Worse dialogue (much too obviously overdubbed). Almost ruined the movie for me. Did not fit the film, at all. We had already seen Lady Deathstrike, and the Godsend that is Mystique, so we didn't need another "sexy" female foe. Seemed more like a already bad Spider-Man villain gone even more wrong. But, if you've seen Mangold's "Call Of Duty Ghosts" commercial with Megan Fox, you''ll see he seems to love his overly breathy (campy), vampy ("Hey stud, how about a...") women. Perhaps a bit TOO "comic booky"?!? Sorry, JM - I tried to like her, I really did...! I have not yet watched the extras, mainly because once I start, I can't stop! I like watching the film with Commentary, then Deleted Scenes, then ALL the extras, in one sitting. Soon, I promise, soon. Much the reason I bought the version with the most content. I'll have to send the wife & kids off on a day trip, and just immerse my mind. I may use the Digital version (this time), on my tablet, for research while writing my script(s). I do wish all of the films were more tightly entwined, as the books were, and as The Avengers appear to be. Therefore & thusly, yes I would have went a slightly different route (and I have some great ideas for "Wolverine 3";), I wish Logan & Mariko's relationship would have felt "deeper" & continued much longer, but I still love this film. It's a great addition to the collection. Perhaps I am biased. The "X-Men" films are my favorite film series. As a comic fan, I wish this and that. As a film fan, i have yet to find anything else that I watch, study, think or talk about any more. My family is on the verge of banning X-Men from our house!

This movie, although with its fair share of flaws, is a wayyyy better experience viewing and narrative wise from the previous movie. The blu Ray viewing is beautiful as well.

    A Better Wolverine

Picking up shortly after the end of X-Men 3, this film follows Logan (aka: Wolverine) in seclusion as well as on a trip to Tokyo to pay final respects to an old, dying friend whose life he saved during World War II. Much is afoot, however, as Wolverine encounters a trail of gangs, corrupt politicians and family squabbles, all of which threaten the life of his departed friend's granddaughter, whom Wolverine must now protect. But he suddenly finds that something is also wrong with himself as his power to heal and regenerate seems to be waning. What Wolverine does not realize is that he is the real target. Much more of this film is focused on Wolverine's character development than in the first Wolverine film and Wolverine is virtually the only mutant character. The regret over the necessity to kill Jean Grey consumes Logan's mind. He is haunted by visions and vivid dreams of Jean throughout the film. It's refreshing to see the human side of Wolverine and not so much portrayed as the invincible cigar-smoking, wise-cracking killing machine we've seen in other X-Men films. X-Men films tend to have far too many characters for there to be any real development or solid plot, so it's a treat to have so much focus on a single character for a change. The final scene of the film leads directly into the upcoming X-Men Days of Future Past, so if you're planning to see it, see this first!

A Samurai Film Worthy of Logan

Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine is what I consider one of the most perfect actor/character combinations in film history. Every mannerism and emotion is wholly truthful to the original character, while Jackman's natural talent and charisma give even further life to one of the most celebrated characters in modern fiction. This story focuses on the life of Logan after he'd left the X-Men to become a solitary soul. Forced back into society by a man who wishes to grant Logan his ultimate wish, he becomes trapped between people vying for power and people wanting him dead. The film is visually beautiful and told at a slower pace than Logan's previous stories. Mangold's direction is pointedly character-driven, with an emphasis on loss and violence. Jackman's portrayal will go down along with Toshiro Mifune's Sanjuro and Clint Eastwood's Blondie as the greatest lone guns in cinema history.

The "Unleashed Extended" is the version to get!

It goes without saying that "The Wolverine" is a VASTLY superior sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", and you can find any number of thought-pieces online as to why, so I won't retread that ground here. What is worth saying regarding this release is that no matter how much cheaper the single-disc release of "The Wolverine" may be compared to this one, THIS IS THE VERSION TO BUY. Never mind the presence of the 3D disc, since that's not even a thing TV manufacturers bother to produce anymore; what matters is that in this "Unleashed Extended" edition, you get both the theatrical release (which, while still too tame a telling of this story, was a decent movie) AND an unrated, extended version of the movie that gives a much clearer taste of what Director James Mangold was going to bring us with this year's "Logan". It's bloodier and more violent (which any comics fan knows Wolverine should always have been), and it digs a bit deeper into the characters and their relationships, which is always better than trimming those bits out for the sake of a shorter run-time. I caught this version on sale for $9.99 at Best Buy, and I couldn't be happier.

What was so apparent from the begininng was that in the time line from the movies this came somewhere after the last x-men movie and before the revamp this coming summer with days of future past. A great director and plot line transformed this coulda been so-so action flick into a definitive x-man movie that fans have wanted. So we're talking comics here and not Tolstoy, so all you non fans sit on the sidelines and wait for the next lame die hard sequel. Hugh Jackman elevates a somewhat two dimensional character on paper into an Everyman joe with dark issues trying to move on in his life, escaping his demons only to brought back into the fold. But face it the wolverine is a hero wether he admits it or not and the movie's plot line is there to put him on the right path. This is movie aduiences want, as Marvel has shown with there build up to the avengers franchise. Listen to the comic geeks and you'll have something special ( but I still won't forgive the producers for bringing Brett Ratner in to direct the last stand x-man movie, who wanted to see Rush Hour with x-man? Fire that genius). the Wolverine movie has me excited about a franchise that I thought went the way pay-phones on the street.

So I got this one along with Logan at a good price-match. Had to get the 3D version because it is the only Blu-Ray version that has the "Extended" version. That said, this movie has a MUCH better story than Logan. I think most folks' issue with it is that it was too"ethnic" with the Japanese culture tied to it. I don't know if it was me but this movie echoed The Last Samurai (with key Japanese actors from that movie in this one.) I loved the photography in this one with the high contrasts and vivid colors. It was great to see culture mixed in with some comic book adventure. Worth the buy especially now that it has been out for awhile. This Wolverine movie first then Logan. My order of like.

Movies like "The Wolverine" show that a sequel CAN BE better than the 1st movie, however it doesn't place a check in all of the "complete movie" boxes. The checks that are present are for 3D Imagery / Mastering (Excellent), Sound (Immersive), and Character Acting / Casting ("Bulls-Eye"). In fact, this movie fills you tank with action, dialog and even some "romance" thrown in for good measure. The main "empty box" is for PLOT. The plot is is easily followed at times, but can become convoluted in the visual translation (i.e. the funeral scene), or even worse, incomplete purpose / reason for actions that are taking place (i.e. why kidnap and not kill a certain character). After watching an old STAR TREK movie, it became evident that where TREK fully expounds on what is happening visually and through character dialog (i.e. why the temporal disturbance does not effect us), this was where THE WOLVERINE failed to deliver. IF you can overcome this particular mishap, I believe THE WOLVERINE is the movie you expected to see IF you saw ORIGINS.

As a big fan of Wolverine and the X-Men - both in films and comic books - I was incredibly disappointed by the previous Wolverine flick, "X-Men Origins - Wolverine." "The Wolverine" is a marked improvement upon the penultimate installment, with great action, good pacing, and Jackman owning the role of Logan. As a companion piece to the first run of X-Men films, it really succeeds, highlighting Logan's brooding conflict over his role in the death of Jean Grey. When you break it down, it's also a pretty decent Samurai/Yakuza film. That said, the movie really ran out of gas at the end. The tight coherence of the first 3/4ths of "The Wolverine" is thrown out the window in it's final moments, choosing instead to go the route of mindless, hack and slash silliness. I still enjoyed it, though, and if you're looking for a good action movie to kill a couple of hours, you could do a lot worse.

I saw this in theaters a couple times it was so well thought out and i had a friend that looked like the same guy , he was a force also but sadly recently passed on before i could show him this in 3D on my TV . When you first look at the cover you think yaa a kids movie with some gore thrown in . But its much more than that it is sort of like a lesson to do things good no matter what kind of person you are physically , Also sort of lets you think there might be people with super powers somewhere in reality but not quite as obvious !

The Wolverine is a 2013 is the sixth installment in the X-Men film series and the second film headlining Wolverine after X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. Hugh Jackman reprises his role from previous films as the title character, with James Mangold directing a screenplay written by Scott Frank and Mark Bomback, with uncredited parts by Christopher McQuarrie, based on the 1982 limited series Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. In the film, which follows the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, Logan travels to Japan, where he engages an old acquaintance in a struggle that has lasting consequences. Stripped of his immortality, Wolverine must battle deadly samurai as well as his inner demons.

This movie doesn't follow the story that I remember reading in the Wolverine comic books as a kid. There is only one other mutant in it and she is pretty lame. She is a hodge podge of a few different ones so not much to focus on. It's also pretty predictable as far as the story. If you don't know who the Silver Samurai is before they reveal it, you must not have been paying very close attention. The previews were misleading so I wouldn't go by them either. I liked the movie overall, but I didn't love it. They need to make sure they take better care of these characters, or they could be just like the bad DC adaptations.

This movie is based upon the 1st 4-issue comic book from 1982 written by Frank Miller (same guy who wrote Sin City, re-vamped Batman from being a campy 60's caricature, to make him grittier, and tougher back in the mid-80's. In other words, the definitive Batman we know today). Anyone who saw Wolverine: X-Men Origins please delete that movie from your mind! This has nothing to do with that one, and is considered non-canon from the other X-Men related movies. THE Wolverine, besides being excellently directed, bridges the store very nicely from X-Men 3 The Last Stand and then into X-Men: Days of Future Past, that came out this summer. Jackman does a great performance and the story is mostly true to the original comic book. I highly recommend this movie. Enjoy!

I always prefer to the extended editions of movies because most times they put a different perspective and tend to give more insight on the story. This set comes with the theatrical version on DVD, Blu-Ray, 3D Blu-Ray, Ultraviolet and a Digital Copy for iTunes. It also has the Extended version on Blu-Ray as well. Both regular Blu-Ray versions offer the "Second Screen App" option so that you can watch the movie and get more information on you tablet as well. The main Blu-Ray is the only disc that has any true extras though. It has 1) an Alternate Ending; 2) "X-Men: Days of Future Past" set tour; 3) The Path of the Ronin. Inspiration, Design, Execution, Hugh Jackman and Reflections (Evolution of Wolverine). If you like seeing how things are made and done, you will like these. Nothing thought provoking, but still good.

Wolverine's past comes back to haunt him in his second solo film. The film picks up after the events of third "X-MEN" film. Logan is living alone in the backwoods, still feeling heart-broken and guilty at the events of "X-MEN 3." Soon, Logan is in Japan to visit an old friend and gets in the middle of some family matters. Japan offers a different locale and action to the mutant series. Though, the film doesn't introduce many new mutants. The two that are introduced are interesting and women. One can see a person's death and the other is a poison spewing reptile-like mutant. Not surprisingly, the film showcases the old Japanese culture and traditions. The fight on the bullet train is especially exciting. It looks great in 3D.
