Q: Is just just a plug in and use, or does is have to be formatted like some other external hard-drives that are not recognized on a PC? Also, does this work on PC AND MAC?

A: it’s formatted to work with Mac out of the box it needs to be formatted for PC, they have directions on there websites on how to format for PC

Q: does this come with software that allows you to manage and view the backup process and files???

A: Yes but I just plugged it into my iMac and it was ready to go.

Q: Can a partition be built to store and operate from Windows and Mac?

A: Yes they can. Any drive should technically be able to do that with the proper partition software. Or you could format it as exFat which can be read by both (and Linux) however frequently switching between the 2 operating systems and accessing files on exFat can cause file corruption. It's possible this issue has been solved by Microsoft & Apple but I'm not 100% sure so I want to give the warning regardless.
