Awesome Sound, Solid App, Finicky Connection?

The Play:5 was my first SONOS purchase. Since buying the first one, I've added a second Play:5 and also a SONOS Connect, so my Sony 5.1 home theater system could get into the act. While the individual pieces are expensive, the product is truly premium. The Play:5's sound great. i have mine on opposite ends of the house (2,700 sq ft), with my home theater in the central, great room. Even with only 1 speaker in a room, the Play:5's do a great job simulating stereo sound. Music is sounds full, with good bass and clear highs. Walking through the house, I've even found myself thinking my Sony system sounds a little "tinny" in comparison. The App is solid, though not perfect. The "group" function also me to play the same music in multiple rooms, and I love that I can change volume in each room individually, on the fly. However, I wish SONOS would take it a step further - Let me build different preset groups with specific volumes for different situations. If i'm cleaning my house, i want all speakers playing pretty loud. If the baby is napping, i probably want those speakers turned way down or off completely. The ability to do that without breaking and rebuild my group every time would be a game changer, all over again. I do like the new integration with Spotify's app, though i generally go through the SONOS app to stream from Spotify, so I can use the volume adjustments. I only have 2 gripes about the system so far: One, the system seems to lose connection to WiFi pretty often. Sometimes I can't connect to my speakers to start (or stop) music. Be warned if you have spotty internet connection: if the 'net goes down, your SONOS speakers are well designed paper weights. The second gripe is the 3.5mm headphone jack on the back of the Play:5. When my internet went down, i thought - "at least i can still plug my iPhone in and play music in one room." Nope. I tried everything. My phone would stream music just fine, but plug it into the Play:5, and there was no sound. I haven't proven it yet, but I think the Play:5 requires an internet connection to play music, even when using the 3.5mm jack. Those two gripes aside, I will be buying more. I would recommend SONOS to any friend with a solid (non-metered) internet connection.

Audiophile Review / Bluetooth Adapter Available

    • My Best Buy® MemberMember

I was very impressed upon my first encounter with the second generation Play5 that I listened to on a display shelf. I purchased a Play5 several weeks later and was even more impressed with this speaker after getting it home and utilizing the customized room tuning feature and adjusting treble and bass to my preference. The high frequencies are crisp and clear and the bass is incredible for this size of a speaker. You can actually feel the bass! Each of the six speakers has it's own independent amplifier that results in full caption of power throughout the speaker. After enjoying listening to some of my favorite songs through the Play5 and discovering that it had a feature in the settings to add another Play5 that you could play in stereo mode, I went out and bought another one. Purchasing the second Play5 created true stereo sound with both speakers working independently of one another providing greater depth and sound. The only thing missing with the Play5 is Bluetooth! This is why I gave it 4 stars as opposed to 5! However, I purchased a Logitech Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the back of the Sonos Play5 and now can stream directly from other devices that I utilize for music, videos, and " books on tape". Note: If you have two Sonos speakers playing in stereo mode you will only need one Bluetooth adapter. Sound will be played through both speakers when the "In Line" feature in Sonos settings is activated. Hopefully this review has been informative and has given you the confidence to purchase your own Sonos Play5.

Amazing Sound and Easy to Setup!

The Sonos ecosystem is, by far, the best you can get in it's class for wifi-based music players. Having purchased nearly everything Sonos makes, this addiction doesn't seem to end. The Class D circuitry within every single driver stage independently, shines through with unparalleled performance matching or even destroying some of the most prestigious brands I've ever owned. Each and every time I have done this, I have been left speechless. When considering how is it even possible for these small-footprinted speakers to compete so effortlessly, I'm reminded of that difference between excellence and mediocre that separates the finite resolution and nuances of my favorite Miles Davis album (Sketches of Spain) in contrast to the essence of the sultry and jazzy voice of Helen Merrill's Born to Be Blue. Well??? What about the mediocre? It's non-existent with Sonos speakers. My home is routered by the Nighthawk X8 connected directly to my fiber connection. I am a long time user of Spotify Premium. Having said that, between that source, my KS9800 Samsung 4k TV and my Marantz TT-15S1 turntable, the quality resonating from the Play 5's, as well as all of the other Sonos products within every room, is just simply stunning. The highs are of the crispest highs and the lows do hit with a decisive precision you can feel. Regarding connectivity, it's as easy as 1,2,3... Any 8 year old could follow the directions, literally. As for the cost for ownership, how can you question the value of Sonos speakers after you've paid thousands for other speaker systems that can't compare to them whatsoever? My only wish would be that this sytem was available 25 years ago when I began my quest for "audio utopia." So, do yourself a favor, and give them a listen. Get them home and do it on a 30 day test drive. See for yourself...nothing compares to these quality-infused speakers, even at twice their price!!

A Worthy Upgrade to the Original Play 5

    • My Best Buy® Elite MemberElite Member

The NEW SONOS Play:5 is superior to the originals, of which I still own 3 of, in ever way. I will start of by saying that I am a sound ENTHUSIAST but not a audiophile by any means. I was bit by the SONOS bug back in 2012 when I picked up 3 of the original 5s to setup wireless music in 3 rooms in my house. I was OK with the sound quality but not super impressed. I play 320k mp3s from my server which sound almost as great as FLAC files. I added the SONOS Sub this summer and the sound improved markedly with deep but tight bass. Yet the mids and highs were a bit "laid back" even after playing with the EQ settings in the SONOS app. The 5s just sounded very good with the sub, but not great. Don't get me wrong. They weren't muddy sounding by any means but the sound lacked a bit of "presence". I picked up 2 of the new PLAY:5s from my local big box store and the new units were totally a new experience before I even took off the 3 layers of shrink-wrap and plastic bags protecting it! Props to SONOS for the amazing and high quality packaging! You can tell SONOS took a page out of Apple's book when it came to the unboxing experience. But as they say, the proof is in the pudding. The setup was simply enough with just a push of a button on the back of the unit and using either the iOS/Android app or the desktop app to tell your system to look for the new speakers. Both new speakers were found in a minute and the app even asked if I wanted to pair them, which I happily did for my living room along with the Sub for a more immersive stereo experience. SONOS really hit the ball out of the pack with the new 5. Sonically, the mids and highs stood out as the most improved. Bass was better as well but the open ports in the back are gone now it seems so there's less boominess. I listen to a fair amount of jazz and acoustic guitar and these new speakers were far better in it's ability to clearly and boldly reproduce them as they were recorded in the studio. This might have to do with the additional drivers and the speakers being angled upwards and to the tweeters to the sides as well as forwards. I can clearly hear a wider "soundstage" as the music played whereas my old 5s had a more narrow presentation. The highs were clear and sparkly without being too harsh or bright where you get annoyed. The mids, important for vocals, were fuller. Bass was tighter without the Sub but deeper. But I think the system still sounds best with the sub. I don't know if it's as simple as more and better drivers or if there is a bit of audio processing happening inside the unit but it works and that's all that matters. I like the new design. I originally thought the black front grills on the white unit, which I purchased, looked out of place. The original white 5 had a white grill. But I have grown to love the new design. It looks like a high quality piece that screams high fidelity. The older unit looked a bit dated now against the new ones. The only thing I missed is the "handle" on the back which allowed me to take it to a new location at will with just one hand. All in all, the updated PLAY:5 is superior to the originals and I have no regrets with my purchase. I've since moved my older speakers to other rooms and still enjoy them. But the new 5s are front and center in my living room paired with the Sub. PROS: +Superior sounding vs old 5 with clearer/cleaner mids and highs; deeper and tighter bass +Ability to skip tracks with just a swipe of the touch sensitive controls +Can be positioned vertically or horizontally with touch controls adjusting to the position desired +Clean and pleasing styling +Great packaging and protection for unit when bought new CONS: -$100 more expensive -No long has the carry handle in the back of unit -Deeper design may make it too big for smaller/shallower tables

Nearly two years of this one-of-a-kind speaker...

    • My Best Buy® Elite MemberElite Member

Almost two years ago, I found myself in a Best Buy. I wanted something to use to listen to music in the garage, but I dislike bluetooth speakers / cheap ones for general... cheap... sound quality. I somehow made my way by the Sonos products. I speak with a relatively unhelpful associate, as there was a few products to choose from, and the display wasn't working perfectly (they had just re-oriented the products in-store). I look up Sonos on my phone and read. I find a few of their claims online: 1) Awesome sound quality (of course they'll claim that!) 2) Always updated (software updates come around) so the speaker doesn't need to be updated due to software limitations 3) Feature packed + lots of supported music services... I mainly use Spotify + Pandora. So - I decide to get the Play:5, for a very hard-to-swallow price. I arrive home. Download the app on my phone. It walks me through setup, step-by-step.... it does require an ethernet cable, but I'm a PC nerd so I had one. Setup was easy. Almost, too easy... I'm sitting on the floor in my living room, with this speaker next to me. I add my Pandora account. Set the volume to 60%. Mind you, all of this is being done via my phone, to a speaker connected to only Power after connecting to Wi-Fi. I hit play. Absolutely astounded. I had to turn the volume down - It was so loud, and I was about two feet away from it. I take a moment to collect my thoughts... and hit play again. Volume at 40%. Still too loud - I'm talking to my roommate, nearly yelling. Fast forward 18 months. I love this speaker. I use it as my alarm, I take it into the garage when I'm hanging out or working on my car, I heft it around the house.... I love it. I've referred probably 13-15 people to buy it after they see mine - it's amazing. It just works. Sound quality is PHENOMENAL from something this small. It has an insane amount of bass for something this size. Clarity... amazing. It just works. I love it. I want to buy more... I just don't need more. This one is enough... isn't that crazy? Great product. I love it. Buy it if you're on the fence about it - give it a shot, and you'll probably love it. Nobody I know has returned theirs, and they all still love theirs. They just work, and they work extremely well.

New SONOS Play 5 Still the best ALL AROUND!

    • My Best Buy® Elite MemberElite Member

I agonized over buying the NEW Play 5's (HI-FI, CD quality) OR the BLUESOUND Pulse 2's (HI RES quality). The Play 5 has more dynamic range (even though the Pulse 2 is said to have more fidelity), and it was much cheaper, so I bought a stereo pair. After many hours of scrutiny, I've decided I love these speakers! The stereo separation is grand, the low end is all the bass most people would ever want, and, when you stream TIDAL or CD quality files, the HI-FI playback is clear and simple as the truth. Norah Jones was on stage in my living room, which is a big room to fill. The Play 5 is good enough for an entry-level audiophile--if not many audiophiles--for sure. Plus, I went to a nearby Magnolia that demos the Play 5 and Pulse 2. The Pulse 2 came off a bit messy to me; the Play 5 does a better job of showcasing the highs, mids and lows. The Pulse Mini actually had more transparent sound than the Pulse 2, but it is too small. The Play 5 has the best combination of scale, clarity, affordability, ease of use, streaming service options, power, design, and support of any all-in-one, streaming speaker. I have had a SONOS ecosystem with CONNECTs, PLAY 1's and PLAY 3's for some time, and I'm glad I stuck with them. SONOS is here to stay for quite some time, they will continue to update and support these Play 5's, which makes them future-proof even without the HI RES support. Besides, HI RES vs. HI-FI is not as important as quality amps and speakers versus lesser quality. And the SONOS is good quality--just as good a physical speaker as any other streaming speaker on the market, it plays CD quality superbly, and I look forward to all the great updates to come...

Great if all you listen to are streaming services

    • My Best Buy® MemberMember

Pros: Great room filling sound. Very easy to setup. I was setup and playing music in less than 5 minutes after opening the box. Control app is easy to use. It does have a line in which at the time of this review the Play 3 & 1's do not. Cons: The unit is really built to work with streaming services like pandora. You can play music/podcasts from your devices. But the source is really limited and controlling. It does have a line in. However, for myself I didn't find the line-in very useful. It's too big of a speaker to put it anywhere where I might want a line to go into it. Such as my computer room. And the line-in isn't really adequate for a media room. Personally I would prefer the Play 3 or play 1 have a line in instead of the play 5 if there was a choice. I was not able to find a good control option for Linux. So I was limited to controlling the unit from my phone. There's a couple of ugly hacks to control it from Linux, but that didn't appeal to me. My point here is that the Sonos system really forces you into a very strict form of which speakers serve what functionality and really over control the source of input. There's little creativity in setting up a Sonos system. Overall: I really liked the unit at first and I read many of the reviews. So I felt prepared for it to be streaming service centered. However, after using it for a few days I ultimately determined the speaker was not a mature enough product for me. It's heavy focus on streaming music sources like pandora really limit it's usefulness. It's also in the need of a platform independent way of controlling it. It is my understanding some of my concerns can be addressed by the Sonos connect. However that was not a satisfactory solution for me due to it's price and yet another component to buy. Ultimately I took the unit back. If all you want to listen to is Pandora, spotify, or services like that. Then This speaker probably will work good for you. Otherwise I would recommend waiting until the product matures a few years down the road and try something else.

    Great quality product

EXPECTATIONS: After spending a sufficient time researching what wireless sound system I wanted for our home, I had a good idea that the Sonos wireless speaker system was the best option to meet the needs of our family. The most important feature for us would be the sound quality and ability to add additional speakers in several rooms over time. The second feature important to us was the ability to use the music on our iPhones, iPads, Samsung phone and laptops. We wanted to be able to listen to the libraries on these devices and the ability to access our iTunes library. In addition, we wanted to be able to stream live music from the internet and access live radio stations. QUALITY: I could not be more impressed with a sound system I was very skeptical about the quality of the sound, but I was pleasantly surprised just how good it sounds. I can’t wait to add speakers to more rooms to get the “full-effect” of the Sonos experience. SET UP: When purchasing the system at Best Buy, I was a little skeptical on just how easy it was going to be. The salesman said it would take just a few minutes. When I got home and we took it out of the box to set it up, it literally took 5 minutes until we were listening to our music. It was extremely easy and it didn’t take an IT genius to figure it out! SATISFACTION: My family could not be happier! We all enjoy playing our music libraries at home and take turns listening to our favorite songs. It has added a very positive element to our home as we listen to each other’s music and dance around the house. The ability to change songs and the volume from anywhere in the house has been a big hit with my family! From the purchase and product knowledge the salesman had at Best Buy, to the simple set-up to the ability to listen to all of the internet music we love. RESEARCH: The online research I conducted was very helpful. I not only read product specifications, researched pricing across different brands, researched brand capabilities, I also paid attention and read quite a few customer reviews. Most all of the reviews I read on various sites were giving the product a 4 star or above rating. They all agreed it was a high-quality product, easy to set-up and very user friendly. They were also able to verify the different music platforms that were compatible with the Sonos product. This helped significantly to making my decision on purchasing the Sonos product.
