Ring - Floodlight Cam, Wired (newest model) — Wide-Angle Retinal 2K Video, 6x Enhanced Zoom, Ultra-Bright Floodlights - White

If you already have Ring devices and a Ring subscription this Wide-Angle Retinal 2K video Floodlight Cam may be for you. I needed coverage on my walkout basement door. There was an existing switched light but no camera coverage in an area with limited visibility. This Floodlight Cam was just what I was looking for. What’s in the box: Ring Floodlight Cam Assortment of mounting screws Wire nuts Screwdriver Mounting bracket Protected by Ring sticker The floodlight cam came with all the necessary mounting hardware and an assortment of screws to ensure it would work with most existing junction boxes. Installation is pretty straightforward. First and foremost, turn off the power to the existing light. Double check to make sure it’s off. Then remove the old light, wire up and mount the Floodlight Cam and test. If you have a standard junction box, standard wiring and a flat vertical mounting surface you are good to go. I didn’t have a standard junction box and my siding isn’t exactly vertical. But I made it work without much difficulty. After you turn the power back on, go into the Ring app on your phone and go through the “add device” process, (or just point your phone camera at the small QR code printed on the device) then you should be good to go. Do note that this device needs ac power. It’s not a battery cam. If you are replacing an existing switched light, that switch needs to remain in the on position. The device also needs WiFi to send the video and to access the camera. The camera captures my entire patio area in its 140 degree field of view. It would be very difficult to get to my back door without activating the motion sensors. As an added bonus, the LED lights are nice and bright. There is also audio capture and two way talk. This floodlight cam came with a 30 day trial Ring subscription. But I already had a Ring subscription that supports multiple devices. If you don’t have an existing Ring subscription, you will need one to get access to the expected features. I have to say that I am impressed with the video quality. The camera is a long way from my router, yet the connection is solid. The motion detection is good too. In summary, this Ring Floodlight cam works reliably and even though the price feels a bit high, it’s worth it to me for the convenience and peace of mind.

I have a rural property and I find that security cameras give me peace of mind, both at home and when we are away. I picked up this floodlight camera to replace a conventional motion detector style floodlight, and this review is based on a week of use. Note that this review is based on Ring Protect plan features, so your mileage may vary.  TL;DR - I like the responsiveness, features, and customization that the Ring camera providers. This is my fourth Ring product and all seem to integrate seamlessly with alerts that will provide which camera has triggered an event. Pros: Easy to install as an upgrade to existing flood light fixture. Great motion zone customization and sensitivity to only get the alerts you want. Low maintenance after initial setup. Cons: The app installation says not to be installed horizontally under an eve due to potential moisture intrusion, but then proceeds to give instructions how to do so, to include caulking around the base of the device. This is information that should be published on the product website / package if there is a risk of it not working horizontally. In the box is the ring camera, install tool, and multiple screw sizes / lengths for mounting. Setup is straightforward for old work, flip breaker, remove old floodlight, mount base to junction box, set mounting bracket (this determines where the camera points) hang camera on base hook while you wire camera, wire, connect housing to base, and restore power. The app will walk you through both install as well as connecting to the app.  I also have a Ring Chime Pro, which acts as both a range extender and can be used to provide audible motion alerts in the house. This is useful if you have kids or other household members who are not logged into the Ring app, and would benefit to know when a motion is detected. You can also link multiple Chime Pro devices to have these audible alerts on each floor of your house.  The app really is where all the magic happens, you can control schedules, times to not receive motion alerts, light schedules, in addition to selecting home, away, or disarmed modes. You can also trigger the camera to alert people if they are being recorded when they trigger a motion event, and if you upgrade to the Ring Protect subscription you can also get AI alerts so I can receive a summary of what triggered the motion alert without having to look at your phone. Additional features include a two way speaker, SOS which is a 2 button process to request policy / fire / medical, and a (somewhat underwhelming) siren. Lastly, and one of my favorite features is that you can set up the zones (3 sections, approximately 270 degrees coverage) where the floodlights shine, which helps such that the floodlight will not shine in one of the bedrooms if a motion event occurs. You can also set the strength of the floodlights if you are in a more residential area and don't want to bother a house nearby with the lights.  Bottom line, I really love the features, which seem to improve monthly through app updates. The camera works nearly seamlessly with the other 3 cameras around the property, and I have full control of when, how, and what level of detail is captured. I recommend this for anyone who needs both a camera and a flood light, or wants to upgrade an existing floodlight to add in video recording. 

Super easy to setup and use. I pulled off my older flood light and put the base mount up and hung the light on the strap holder. Which is a great feature to not drop the light. Only issue I ran into for installation was that there is a gap with foam and the wall. So I had put a little silicone to fill the gap. If you don't know how to aire this please hire an electrician or a handy person to do this for you or else you will mess this up or get hurt or elctrocuted. Anyway after installing setup was super easy. Because I have a ring account I just followed the prompts and I was in. If you don't have a ring account you will need to set one up. Also for continued ok online access you need to pay. This comes with a trial version but when it ends you will not have access to the detailed features and AI detect that is offered. Field of vision is the great. It spans the length of my driveway with the camera pretty much in the middle. It's about a 40 ft long driveway. Overall easy to use. Easy to get access. Easy to filter events. Bi directional talk and speaker are decent. There still is a slight lag but ok. Overall great camera. Great features for what is needed.

If you’re in the Ring ecosystem this new floodlight cam is a nice addition to your system. Setup is just like any other floodlight, but Ring includes a nice strap that makes hanging it easier especially when ceiling mounting. The video quality is excellent with the 2k wide angle camera that not only allows you to have better clarity but to see more. With the 6x zoom you’ll also be able to zoom in further with that clarity. The LED lights also provide excellent light that’s very bright and if they’re to bright for you, you can adjust the brightness in the Ring app. You also have a built in siren for an added layer of security, as my past experience, sometimes lights and cameras won’t scare off people intent on stealing. In order to get the best experience with Ring devices, you really need the subscription but after using it, it’s definitely worth the price. I’ve used many cameras and floodlight cams with local storage only and though I prefer that, you do get a more robust experience with the Ring subscription. If you’re looking at upgrading your previous floodlight camera or are new to the Ring system, this is an excellent floodlight camera

The Ring Floodlight Camera Gen 2 was simple and straightforward to setup. We just had to remove the old floodlight and connect it to the existing wiring. The floodlight's wiring is housed behind a removable mounting plate with a cutout for the wiring to pass through. There’s also a hanging strap that hooks onto the mounting plate’s interior to hold the camera up while you connect the wires. The back of the mounting plate has insulating foam to prevent water, drafts, and bugs from entering the fixture and hole in the wall, though I’d still recommend caulking around the base after installation. I liked that the included screwdriver has a double-ended bit and serves as a hex driver for the cap nuts when the bit is removed. Once the unit is wired up and the power is restored to the circuit, the device powers on immediately. You’ll need the Ring app installed on a mobile device and a registered account to set it up. It takes only a few minutes to add the device to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network and update its firmware. Linking your Ring and Amazon accounts lets you use it with Alexa smart speakers and video screens. The camera comes with a free trial of a Ring Protect plan for 30 days. The plan allows you to access video history up to 180 days, unlocks AI features like text descriptions and familiar faces, SOS emergency services, and activity-based alerts. Since the unit is hardwired, 24/7 continuous recording is available as well. Although the camera can be used without a paid plan, you will be limited to live-view only with 2-way talk without video recordings. This latest generation floodlight has a retinal 2K resolution which captures footage at up to 2560 x 1440 pixels resolution with 140° horizontal and 85° vertical field of view. The resolution and framerate can vary greatly depending on your WiFi signal strength at the time of recording. I saw anywhere from 15 fps to 23 fps, with higher framerate footage providing the clearest and sharpest images while the low end produced very blurry, grainy and even frozen video at times. When the bandwidth is sufficient for max resolution, the image is clear and sharp with good detail and natural looking colors and contrast in both live and recorded views. The 6x digital zoom lets you zoom in but tends to look grainy. There’s also a slight fisheye effect due to the wide angle, so the full-size video will appear curved at the sides and corners. The black and white infrared night vision is clear and illuminates a pretty far distance. Just make sure the spotlights aren’t angled in too close to the lens as the IR light can reflect off them and potentially wash out the image. Motion zones are customizable and can be set on a schedule so you only get alerts during certain times of the day. The speaker for the unit is just under the lens of the camera. It is used for 2-way talk, automatic warnings to visitors being recorded, or to sound a loud 85 dB siren. Note that warnings require you to enable “modes,” like home or away, for use as a security system, and the siren can only be manually triggered in the Ring app and will not trigger automatically on motion events. The speaker and mic audio quality are generally decent and clear, though if your connection is weak, digital compression artifacts or delays may occur. The mic picks up voices decently and captures a bit of ambient noise as well, however, sometimes can be a bit garbled with compression artifacts or clipping noticeable. The two LED spotlights on the unit are adjustable in position, so you can swivel and point them where you want the light coverage. They are very bright with a max brightness of 2000 lumens with a 3000K warm white color temperature. They can be a bit blinding, so thankfully you can dim it in 10% increments in the app. The lights are only motion-activated when it’s sufficiently dark out, with a customizable 30 second to 15 minute timeout, and its motion zones and sensitivity settings are separate from the camera's. Alternatively, you can set a schedule for them to be always on/off regardless of motion. When motion is detected, the app sends you notifications on your phone; you can even specify which types of motion you want to see, like people or vehicles. Alerts can also be played over your smart speakers, if set up in the Alexa app. Overall, the Ring Floodlight Gen 2 Camera is a decent option for outdoor security if you already use other Ring devices. It was easy to install, has clear HD images when WiFi signal is strong, and has a number of useful security features. You’ll get the most out of it with a paid subscription, including access to SOS emergency services, 24/7 recording, and video recording history; plus you'll have the option to add on professional monitoring for additional peace of mind.
