A:AnswerYou can file multiple state returns with the same software. You don't have to download another copy but you have to pay the $19.99 (+tax) for each filing
A:AnswerHi James - The software does not automatically determine this for you. However, you’re almost always better off married filing jointly (MFJ). Many tax benefits aren’t available if you file separate returns. Ex: You can’t claim a majority of the credits if you file separately. Also, if you file jointly, your standard deduction (if you don’t itemize) will be higher. This usually causes your taxable income and tax to be lower.
Married filing separately (MFS) might benefit you if you’re liable for Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) on a joint return. However, this is only true if only one spouse is liable on a separate return.
The best way to figure out whether married filing jointly or married filing separately will benefit you the most is to prepare your returns both ways. Then, choose the filing status with the lowest net balance due or refund.
If you choose married filing jointly, both of you can be held responsible for the tax and any interest or penalty due. One spouse might be held responsible for all the tax due — even if the other spouse earned all the income. If either spouse doesn’t agree to file jointly, then both spouses must file separately. There’s an exception if one of you qualifies for head of household status (HOH).
For a complete list of the “special rules” when filing MFS, see page 22 of Publication 17 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p17.pdf
A:AnswerI always like to buy a cd instead of downloading for multiple reasons: security (vs putting your personal information on the internet), easier to load on multiple machines and to file electronically. keep the cd for any future uses, including computer breakdowns, to file ammendments, etc.
A:AnswerYes, H&R Block will import TurboTax files from previous year. Both are similar programs. The big advantage for H&R Block is that they will provide more support if you are audited. TurboTax wants you to pay an additional $44.95 for support in case of an audit.
A:AnswerYou can file an e-return with the state, but you will have to pay for it. I find it easier to take the printed return and mail it to the state. In Illinois. I use the free filing on the state website.
A:AnswerHello Chucky - Rest assured that if you purchase the disc version of H&R Block software, you will have the ability to download the program by following the directions located inside the package.
A:AnswerHi Bill - You can actually use the same program for multiple people. You can file up to 5 federal returns for free. State e-files are just $19.99 per return.
