Q: QuestionWill this back up photos and Family Tree Maker from laptop and PC? Does it come with instructions about how to format it or anything that is needed to be able to back up items? Will I need any special cables for the PC?

• A:Answer It comes with a cable that you just plug into your USB port. You will be able to move or copy anything to it that you can download or that is sitting on your PC. No software setup required. Just plug in, make sure you locate where the drive is (on my laptop, my hard drive is C:\ and this devices comes up as E:\ so I make sure anything I save or move or copy to this external hard drive is on E:\). From there, you can create your own file folders such as: E:\Photos of Canada Trip

Q: QuestionDoes the software do a good full system backup? My last Passport did it for awhile then the software stopped doing it. I could copy other files. What is the version of the software? Thanks in advance!

• A:Answer Back up drives should usually be twice the size of the drive you’re backing up. You want to be able to store at least two backs ups on the drive. So yes, it will do back ups provided it is large enough to accommodate your drive.

Q: QuestionI am running Mac OS Catalina and I connect a windows 10 formatted WD External 2TB, and I am not able to see the Drive nor to mount the Drive. Is it compatible with Mac OS Catalina? Do I need to install a driver for Mac OS???? Regards

• A:Answer So if youe use it with MacOS you need to format the drive to a Mac Compatible format. Open up Finder, under your applications folder there should be a folder called "Utilities". Within that folder you are looking for the application called "Disk Utility". Once you open the application you should see your new drive on the sidebar on the left. Select it, then select "Erase" which is found on the top part of the screen. You will be prompted with a small window where you can change the name of your drive so it is easier to identify so I suggest you rename it. You will also be asked what format you want to use for which I usually use APFS unless you would like to use the drive with a windows machine as well in which case I recommend setting it to ExFat. Once you click erase your computer will take care of the rest and when it's done you should see the drive appear on your desktop. Hope this helps

• A:Answer If you are using the WD Backup software, it will only backup what has changed since the last backup. If it did not complete the prior backup, it will pick up where it left off.

• A:Answer I was caught by surprise i had to install wd app before being able to use the hard drive.. The installation seemed stuck at18% for about 10mins now.. Forcing people to downliad app before using the device is really unethical especially the device is and box is similar to the previous ones i bought which could be used just by plug in.. I hope the ceo and the team who did this is sacked for this.... Its jyst unethical and not customer orientated.. Users should be given a choice for wanting to use the app or not..

Q: QuestionWhen first using a device for backup with Mac OS Time Machine, it asks if you want MacOS to encrypt the device (recommended). Since the description of this device says "hardware encryption" should I have Mac OS encrypt the device or not?

• A:Answer It should work. It comes with WD backup software but you don’t have to use it. I would suggest doing direct copy and paste from your Vista machine. The files should be readable on pretty much any modern computer. I have done this to put old data like you’re describing onto a Linux machine and it worked great! Good luck!

• A:Answer On the packaging it indicates it works with Mac via the software that comes with it. It also indicates that with a reformatting it will work with Apple Time machine. I bought it to use with an older Mac. I haven't implemented it yet. Hope this helps.

• A:Answer It depends on the "size" of the photos. By "size", I mean the data in each photo. Without getting too complicated, I will point to the fact that photos I have taken on my phone are about 3 MB each. The 2 TB Hard Drive contains space for 2 Terabytes of data. 2 TB = 2,000,000 MB This means that I would be able to store about 666,667 photos, if the size of each photo was 3 MB [2,000,,000 MB divided by 3 MB/photo = 666,666.6667 Of course if the photos are larger, then you would be able to store fewer pictures. And videos take up much more space than photos). Bottom Line is that 2 Terabytes (the size of this hard drive) is a lot of space. It's 2,000 gigs of space where data can be stored. Hope this helps.
