    Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror Gem

I first viewed Color Out of Space on Shudder, gleeful to enjoy another of Nicolas Cage's recent movies (Mandy, Pig, Willy's Wonderland, etc.). The rich chromatic landscape and mind warping events of the movie felt very much like the Lovecraftian story it portrays. There are a few moments when humor plays a role that I did not expect or fully appreciate, although for many audiences it likely offers a reprieve from the sometimes graphic and disturbing scenes. I picked this disc up from Best Buy a few months ago, finding a great sale price that made the 4K UHD/Blu-Ray combo too tempting to resist. I do not own a 4K UHD player at this point, although the Blu-Ray transfer is terrific. I stand by my love for physical media, and this version rises above the streaming option I first watched on Shudder. Special features are limited, but you will receive a making of featurette, deleted scenes, and a photo gallery. Would a SteelBook version be better? Maybe, but I am more than happy with this purchase.

This movie was recommended to me a horror fan. I was not disappointed. Nicolas Cage and cast deliver a scary experience when something from outer space lands on their property.

So, why isn't it? Lack of digital copy? No... at the low prices RLJE releases their films at, (the incredible Mandy (also starring Nic Cage going back-to-back in his frantic best since Vampire's Kiss for RLJE,) and Bone Tomahawk being other must-owns from them,) it's become standard for their films to bypass this feature. A true shame, because of how good their films have been. The loss of a star is simpy due to the lack of HDR in a film that demands it- "color" is right in the title. The film itself, the performances, the FX, music... ALL of it is 5 star material, otherwise. For those unfamiliar, COOS is based on an HP Lovecraft story, and he's often been given some great treatments, and COOS may be the best yet. (The story has been given several film treatments, and if you enjoy 80s horror, the film, The Curse, was also based on COOS). A meteor falls in the backyard of Cage and his family's isolated cabin, and a plethora of strangeness begins- from strange smells, the disappearance of the meteorite, voices from their well, mutations to animals, loss of time... from madness to body horror, COOS has everything in place to bring the creepy vibes. The film did more than bring Nic Cage's crazy voice from Vampire's Kiss back, it also brought director Richard Stanley out of a 2 decade long retirement, who has stated this is the first in an HP Lovecraft trilogy, with The Dunwich Horror on deck next. One can hope he handles each of the next films with such care, and if so, HP Lovecraft fans are in for a real treat.

Based on the Lovecraft story of the same name, very creepy, Nick Cage is being classic Nick Cage (including a use of his weird accent from Vampire Smile in certain scenes). Very disturbing with a great mix of CGI and practical effects. Awesome, creative shots and cinematography. Director hasn't worked on a theatrical film since The Island of Dr. Moreau (90s) but he's still got it. Would recommend to fans of cosmic horror.

The movie starts out Erie and compelling. The acting is good, the production is good. Pretty quickly around the half way point things start getting weird and only get crazier. It’s a wild ride from start to finish and I absolutely enjoyed it. You do need the right expectation going into this movie, it’s def not for everyone, it’s a weird horror movie at its core but it’s very well done for what it is.

I was very satisfied with The Color out of space. The modernization of this HP Lovecraft horror film was well done. Nicolas Cage was absolutely terrific in this film. Although the low budget showed through the film at times overall I enjoyed it. My daughter watched it also with her boyfriend and tells me it gave her nightmares because it was such a strange film. 4K review: The color was bright the images were sharp and the sound quality was excellent. I would recommend this film to horror fans.

    Nic Cage Enters the Unknown

I wasn't sure what to think of this movie when it first came out, but my growing appreciation of late-career Cage (Mandy, Willy's Wonderland, Pig) led me to pick up this movie based on the HP Lovecraft novel of the same name... and boy, am I glad I did. This is an engrossing, startling, and at times truly shocking tale of a family torn asunder by the unknown. A must for fans of Lovecraft, or just creepy psychological body-horror and The Unlocked Cage himself.

Having been a Richard Stanley fan for some time, I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued when I heard he came out of retirement to make this film. I wouldn't say it's as good, or in the same ballpark, as his earlier films like Hardware or Dust Devil, but it was still a fun b-movie. Despite lacking HDR, it still looks great in 4K, and delivers yet another fun over-the-top performance from Nicholas Cage. Worth a look!
