    Screen Chips very easily....

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Purchased the Vivosmart HR, and only had it about 2 weeks, and was walking and literally tapped my hand on the doorknob and immediately looked down at my device to check it as you normally would, and on the face of the screen it appears a thin layer of the glass has chipped off, so obviously the screens aren't made to withstand much wear and tear, and I honestly didn't bump it that hard. It seems to be interfering with the function of the touch screen now.. Thankfully I have the Geek Squad coverage and should be able to take it back and return it for another device.

We are sorry to hear the screen on your device is damaged. This is not something we see often as the screen is made of a hardened glass. We appreciate the details and hope you can choose Garmin again. Best regards. ~QKO Garmin

This did not fit around my wrist. I returned it an bought a FitBit before using it. Best Buy does not carry the larger strap version than an adult male could use. According to Garmin's website, it is waterproof to 5 ATM. But, i saw nothing of this on the box to indicate this. It also will let you control the music on your phone. These features are why I give it 2 stars and not 1. As it is, without having an optional longer strap to purchase or unit with a longer strap, it is useless, since it cannot be worn by a typical sizes adult male. I am very disappointed that there are no optional straps available for this. Garmin obviously thought this was good idea, since they do sell straps for the vivofit 2. If you can't wear it, the quality and features are meaningless. There is a guide on the box. Check this before purchasing.

Thank you for your review. As mentioned, there are two sizes for the vívosmart HR. To help in deciding which size would fit best, we recommend using the vívosmart HR sizing guide, available here: http://www8.garmin.com/fitness/pdfs/vivosmartHR-band-sizing-guide.pdf

For availability of the different sizes, please check with Best Buy.

At first, the exercise band seemed great. But after wearing it for a few days, I started developing a rash around my wrist. After switching it to my other wrist, same problem. At random times, it stopped syncing with my cell phone for two months each time. But would only retain the last one week of data once it worked again. Would not consider walking as exercise. Had to manually enter that each time. Walking upstairs and downstairs did not give an accurate count. Made me do twice the exercise. Ended up returning it to Garmin for a full refund since BestBuy gives only a short amount of time to return and not enough time to test it out yet.

Everything worked great for about a week. synced it up to my "myfitnesspal" and it worked for about a week, and now will not sync up. Garmin says it's an Myfitnesspal issue, and Myfitnesspal says it's a Garmin Issue. I can't stand the "blame game". Also, the heart rate indicator stopped indicating about two weeks after purchase as well. The step counter is always accurate and i have no problem with my Garmin syncing to my phone for weather and personal notifications. That being said, all I can say is "if I knew then, what I know now, I probably would NOT have made the purchase, because my main goal was for my Garmin to sync with my Myfitnesspal"

I purchased the Garmin Vivosmart HR in February, it is 2 months later, I waited to post my review in hopes that I would be able to give this activity tracker a better rating, but that has not occurred. From minute one this device chronically "unpairs" with my phone (iPhone 6) causing me to manually have to add the device repeatedly when syncing my data from my device to my app. I sent the diagnostic emails to Garmin with no response, then sent emails to the support address as well only to be told a lot of technical nonsense to try, including pairing the device with a different phone, which also met with the same results. At that point the conclusion was made that there must be something wrong with my Garmin. I was told I must mail only my device to Garmin (at my expense) and between mailing from my location to theirs then the return package would take approximately one month's time, putting additional inconvenience on me and my weight loss goals. I am dissatisfied with Garmin's customer service, and my decision to save a small amount of money by trying Garmin instead of following my tried and true brand loyalty and sticking with Polar. Do all your homework and research, if you truly want this particular activity tracker, be sure to purchase it somewhere that has a longer return/exchange policy so you are not subjected to additional headaches and heartaches.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. I’m very sorry to hear about the Bluetooth troubles that you experienced with your vívosmart HR, and for the inconvenience that followed. Although your device has been exchanged and Garmin Customer Care likely provided these to you, I wanted to give some troubleshooting suggestions for both you and others who may be reading this review.

With regard to the Bluetooth issues:

      1. Please ensure that the Garmin Connect Mobile app is up to date. If "auto updates" are enabled on your phone, you may already be up to date. If not, you can check the Google Play Store to see a list of app updates that are available, if any.
      2. Please ensure that your vívosmart HR has the latest firmware installed. We recommend using a computer to update the device via Garmin Express (http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html).
      3. Please ensure that you're following the pairing instructions as listed below. (Please note: Your vívosmart HR will not function properly if paired directly through the Bluetooth settings on your phone. It must be paired within the Garmin Connect Mobile app.)

      Pairing Instructions: http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={a84ed9c0-92f9-11e5-4cfe-000000000000}&kbName=garmin

Once your vívosmart HR and the Garmin Connect Mobile app are updated and the devices are paired, they should sync properly. Should issues persist, Garmin Customer Care would be happy to assist you further, and can be reached using the contact information listed on our Support page (www.garmin.com/support).

Again, thank you so much for your review. (KS) Garmin

I made a switch from Apple Watch to the Garmin vivosmart, and immediately switched back. I could not get use to the app. The device I found was very comfortable to use. The display was well thought out and easy to read, but I went back to Apple Watch. Will recommend if you did not use an Apple Watch.

Really wanted to love it (upgraded from the regular Vivosmart and was looking forward to the new features- wrist-based HR monitoring, flights of stairs tracking, nicer interface, etc.) It was bulkier than the first generation Vivosmart but still seemed comfortable at first, but over time, it got more and more uncomfortable on my small female wrist. The deal breaker was that HR monitoring was only accurate when tracking resting / non-exercising HR. During exercise, it reported incorrect HR most of the time. I did a crazy intense one hour boot camp class and my Vivosmart HR reported that I burned 72 calories (and HR was only very slightly elevated). I followed ALL of Garmin's recommendations for accurate tracking but still had inconsistent and inaccurate readings.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't have a great experience with the product like we would hope and expect! During exercises, it's important that the vívosmart HR not slide around on the wrist/arm. It would also need to remain free from dirt and water (sweat).

The band is worn somewhere between too loose and too tight. While working out I wore the device on my left arm above the wrist bone as instructed. The heart rate monitor read 90 BPM while the elliptical read 130 BPM, this was after several minutes of working out. The flight counter would track flights of stairs that I did not climb, resulting in me getting 2-3 times my goal. While wearing this device at night, the heart rate green LED was so bright that it would wake you up if you moved to where you could see it. It has a lot of nice features on it, including changing the wrist and orientation on the fly using the Garmin app. Even though you can change the orientation on the device, the text notifications are difficult to read. I did not expect this to be EKG accurate, but not 40 BPM off. It's a neat idea, but poorly executed.

Received this as a Christmas present. Overall happy with the device features, however battery life did not live up to its claim. Claims up to 5 days on a charge. I was lucky to get 12 hours a day before needing to charge it. After speaking numerous times with the techs at Garmin and implementing their suggestions I was advised it was a product defect and to return to the purchase store. Customer Service at Best Buy did not want to even exchange at first since it was past the 15 day return policy. They eventually agreed to exchange it, but then wanted to charge me the $50 difference since it was originally purchased at sale price and was no longer on sale. After a lengthy process Best Buy did agree to even exchange it. While it was a frustrating process I am hopeful the newly exchanged one works as promised.

    Buy a Fitbit Charge instead

I had a Fitbit Charge HR before that I loved. When it broke I replaced it with the Garmin Vivosmart HR because it had the same features but was also waterproof for swimming and the reviews for it were good. Comparing the two the Garmin Vivosmart HR has some cool "above and beyond" features, but it's basic functionality is lacking. It is not accurate or consistent in measuring steps, flights, calories or intensity minutes. It is not very good at recognizing swimming/running/sports. The app/website do not display much useful information. And it does not sync with my phone or computer without me explicitly telling it to. Bottom line: I've tried both and the Fitbit Charge is MUCH better.

I actually ended up returning this product as ultimately it did not fit my needs just right and was uncomfortable. I liked the features. Watch was fine and steps and stairs tracking seemed accurate. Heart rate seemed fairly accurate as well. I found the swimming feature nice but you had to remember to activate prior as well as other cardio. What I did not love was the fit and feel. Was very bulky and stood out. Felt like my eye was constantly drawn to it. The lighting level was not great. Reminded me of an old analog kids watch. But most of all I found uncomfortable, the sensor stuck out and left an imprint on my skin that got sore after a couple days even with breaks so I ended up returning.

The main reason I upgraded from vivofit to vivofit HR was for the wrist heart monitor. I expected it to be not as accurate as the chest strap but it is literally useless. It only works well when I ride a bike and my arm is stationary. If my arms are moving it is sometimes off by up to 70 beats a minute. I am tired of constantly having to adjust it during my workout to get to work. I have tried all the recommended tricks but they don't last. The other features work fine but you can just get a regular smart watch for that. I regret trying everything to get this to work right and keeping it too long to return it.

It works well as a Activity Tracker and a watch. The Heart Rate Monitor is close to being right most of the time, but depending on what you are doing, it on a regular basis sends out outrageous readings. I don't know if it picks up vibrations or something else, but when checking the 4 hour history there are almost always unexplainable spikes when using the unit. I had the vivofit II before this unit and it did the same thing without having to charge the watch once a week and with out the spikes, the only drawback of that unit was you had to wear a chest strap to get the Heart Rate.

I chose to go with this over a FitBit due to issues I read about. I've only had this a few weeks and I'm wondering if I made the right decision. I have worked out several times including today for at least 40-60 minutes and it only records 68 calories burned! Outrageous. This happened before and I was thinking maybe I wasn't wearing it right but when it happened again today I'm ready to take it back. I purchased the replacement coverage but I feel like a few weeks in there should not be a need for this. Smh at Garmin. At this point I would not recommend this product.
